Tox - Secure messaging for everyone
« on: 01. August 2013, 00:06:58 »

Secure messaging for everyone.
With the rise of widespread government monitoring programs, Tox is an easy to use application that allows you to connect with friends and loved ones without anyone else listening in.

About tox
Tox is built with the idea that you can keep up with friends and family without having your privacy violated. While other big-name services require you to pay to unlock features, Tox is free in both price, and in liberty. That is, you’re free to do whatever you wish with Tox.

Messages
At your fingertips. You're always in the loop with instant encrypted messaging.

Security
Tox takes your privacy seriously. With leading-class encryption, you can rest assured knowing that the only people reading your messages are the ones you send them to.

Ease of Use
Unlike other secure messaging solutions, Tox does not require you to be a computer programmer to use it. Tox comes out-of-the-box with an easy-to-use interface that allows you to focus on your conversations.

Freedom
Tox is both free for you to use, and free for you to change. You are completely free to both use and modify Tox. Furthermore, Tox will never harass you with ads, or require you to pay for features.

Manjaro
will include Tox from the beginning. So we already ship the development releases of this new instant messenger.  To install it on Manjaro use pacman, octopi or pamac and install tox from our community repositories:

sudo pacman -S tox
EDIT by moderator: This package is not longer supported. Please install one of the following packages from the AUR:
Code: [Select]
yaourt -S utox-git
Code: [Select]
yaourt -S venom-git
Quick Tutorial
Start tox and click on the edit button. Change the name to your wanted nic. Click on the copy button. Pass this generated hash to your friend.
He can add you by clicking on the Add Friend button. You will get a notice that someone will add you. Accept it. Now you both are connected without a hassle.

Visit also the development page for more information about this new project.

thanks for your great post, philm!

bitmessage tries to do (almost) the same thing, but it's emphasis is on a secure e-mail and chat alternative...

the goal of tox is a secure video chat and instant messages even when your pc is switched off. these features are not implemented yet. but i can hardly wait for them.
