Xfce Whisker Menu
« on: 21. June 2013, 10:06:50 »
Alternate Xfce menu

Whisker Menu is an alternate application launcher for Xfce. When you open it you are shown a list of applications you have marked as favorites. You can browse through all of your installed applications by clicking on the category buttons on the side. Top level catagories make browsing fast, and simple to switch between. Additionally, Whisker Menu keeps a list of the last ten applications that you’ve launched from it. More: http://gottcode.org/xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin/#screenshots

A huge Thank you :P i  think xfce should include this by default as a plugin :P

Like Ringo said Manjaro should include this in the next release, too :P

Thank you for sharing! Finally a menu comes with search option in xfce. Please make this menu as default for the next manjaro release.

thanks for this information.

i have always looked for a start menu in xfce with proper search function! i will test this!

the standard xfce appfinder did not work for me, because i cannot go to settings without using the mouse or the arrow keys. the window size is alway screwed up as well.
therefore, i have synapse installed right now. it does the job, but i have synapse and the standard xfce start menu installed. i do not need both!

my only concern is, how i can assign the windows key on my keyboard (Super_L) to whisker menu. any ideas?

when you want this to become default in xfce, then go to the xfce forum and write about it. when you do not do this, the xfce people will not know about it!

i will switch back to synapse, but i will return to whisker menu from time to time to see whether a couple of changes/additions have been made:
1. easy to setup keyboard shortcut (the Super_L key) or at least some short how-to (i know how to add a custom keyboard shortcut, i just do not know what command and/or directory i have to use to do that)
2. a memory function: currently when you start to enter a couple of letters in the search function, it gives you the search results always in the SAME ORDER. this is not what i want. i want the search results also sorted for how often i klick one search result.
3. when the search results get displayed, i cannot use the arrow keys to select another search result.

when you have figured out how to solve problem 1 or 2, please tell me!
until then, i will continue to use synapse.

Using Xfce's Keyboard settings you can assign any key (ex Super_L) or combo (ex Super_L+Ctrl_L) to any application - the appfinder is xfce4-appfinder

Its nice to see xfce has a menu like this now, as its other menu has sadly become quite antiquated.
Searchbars are a good thing I have to say, especially for new users who dont know much about the OS.

I don't currently use XFCE, but if I were, I think I would use this over the default menu for sure.

Very good, thank you. I miss open automatically (without clicking) submenus, but it is already very good.

when you open the whisker menu it shows you your last used apps or your most frequently used apps. i have not figured this out yet.
when you are looking for something else you can either click the categories and search it there, or you can start typing and the results show up.

i know how i assign a keyboard shortcut to xfce.
what i do NOT know is the command, that has to be executed, when i press the shortcut button in order to open the whisker menu!

so again: i want to assign a keyboard shortcut to the whisker menu. what command do i have to execute to open whisker menu???

Install the git version (xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin-git) and it will be xfce4-popup-whiskermenu in /usr/bin

thanks for your reply.

what i have done:
-installed the git version from yaourt
-i went to settings --> keyboard --> (keyboard) shortcuts
-there, i added a new item with the command "/usr/bin/xfce4-popup-whiskermenu" and the keyboard shortcut <Alt>F2

the file /usr/bin/xfce4-popup-whiskermenu is really there. i have also tried adding a new item with the command "xfce4-popup-whiskermenu" and the keyboard shortcut <Alt>F2. when i press <Alt>F2, there is nothing happening!
there is also NO other application with the keyboard shortcut <Alt>F2.

what am i doing wrong?
