The link(s) haven't changed much, the oldest "main" one (that is still around), is still Slack, and the youngest is still Arch, that's it, in fact, not that much has changed except for some of the sub-distro's, dead or alive.

http://gizmodo.com/what-if-operating-systems-were-religions-1493789094

What do you mean what if?  For some devs, they clearly are.  Present company likely excluded of course.   :P :P :P :P :P

Also the writer of that article has ignored one of christianity's largest global movments and that would be The Seventh Day Adventists.  And I'm sad to say that without them in the mix, the analogy falls flat.  Also given their wealth and such Apple looks more catholic than orthodox to me.

And all other criticisms asside, A lot of people do treat their OS like a religious experience.  And since religion is not permitted as a discussion on this board i'm guessing this thread will get shut down quick.

I think it might better be called the linux family orchard as there are cleary a number of independent distros that aren't offshoots of another.

Obviously Slackware, debian, mandriva, fedora/redhat, gentoo and arch are the major trees in that orchard but there are a number of other independents as well but those are the six major players not including android of course.  Android concerns me as i thought it was spun off of gentoo.... but here it is listed as independent.

Anyone care to comment on that?

Google OS is based on Gentoo  Android has a Linux Kernel which they recompiled for their needs thats about all the Linux in android.

There seems to be a few oddities with that chart.. Mandrake  changed to Mandriva  then into Open mandriva  and Mageia and Pclinuxos were forks of Mandriva
Fuduntu was a fork of Fedora not an independant

Great to see some of the old names and remember all the $ spend on discs to burn,
