Manjaro Netbook no wifi after upgrade
« on: 06. May 2016, 02:32:34 »
Hi,
I am new to Manjaro and Arch but have used Mint and othe *buntu's for a number of years.
I installed netbook 15.12 on two computers, 1) a Foxconn desktop with Atom and 2) Acer Aspire netbook.
Foxconn works great and is much snappier than the PeppermintOS that was on there.
Netbook worked with live boot and initial boot after install I could connect to wifi.  It prompted to configure for Atom and after update networking is disabled.

Any suggestions?
Shaun

So is the icon in the panel for network there at all? what do you get when you right-click it?
Does your netbook have a hardware switch to enable and disable wifi?

edit: probably silly question: you have rebooted after the update, right?

After kernel update my the kernel module for my wireless card stopped loading automatically on boot for some reason. This led to a issue similar to yours. You can check if it is the same by choosing to boot with fallback initramfs from advanced grub menu. If wireless then works, issue is probably with your kernel modules.

If that is the issue, it is easy to fix by adding that module to your normal initramfs. You can fond the name of the module from the output of command
Code: [Select]
lspci -kThen you just add it to your
Code: [Select]
/etc/mkinitcpio.confTo the line that says MODULES, inside the quotes that the line has.
Then just run
Code: [Select]
sudo mkinitcpio -P
sudo update-grub

Maybe my problem is related, maybe not. I installed Xfce OpenRC, added linux-netbook-manjaro kernel, then swapped NetworkManager for wicd, enabled everything the OpenRC way. (I don't like nm-applet, wicd seems to connect to the router in a more reliable way.) Now wicd connects to my router, but cannot connect to the internet. My PC is able tp  connct over the same router to the internet. I am on the testing branch with the netbook. This is not a help request (yet), but maybe a confirmation that s.th. might be wrong.

thanks for the quick answers.
Rob  -- Yes, I did reboot after update.  I can right click on network icon and enable.  but nothing seems to happen.
I have opened a terminal window and used lspci - v  which indicated i am using an atheros chipset for eth0 (enp1s0 or something similar)  and a Broadcom 4313 wireless  (bcrmcas i think).

Chrys --I have not yet tried the lspci -k and additional instructions.  I will try tonight after work.

Eugen -- i will try wicd, but i think the drivers are the problem.

The drivers seemed to work when i booted off the usb stick, i was able to connect to my wifi network.
After install, it configured for Atom and i don't know if the Broadcom driver is in the atom kernel that was switched out.

I can plug in cat 5 cable to my router and that works despite the pesky atheros that i am not a fan of.

last night while messing with this issue - i opened the manjaro settings manager, clicked on hardware to see what was listed, in messing around with this issue trying to remove broadcom and reinstall it, i messed with some of the other drivers and got the video driver all screwed up, resulting in a re-install.

Will look at this again tonight.  Thanks for all the help so far.
any ideas about the broadcom driver would be helpful.

Your WiFi model probably can be made working with uninstalling the driver which is installed with mhwd. Open Manjaro Settings Manager -> Hardware and right-click on the broadcom driver to uninstall it. Then open a terminal and run
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe b43

Eugen-B,  Thanks.  that worked perfectly.
i uninstalled the Broadcom driver and entered sudo modprobe b43 in a terminal window.
wifi came up and automatically connected.

I plan on restarting and seeing if it continues to work.
The system overall is quite useable, this little netbook was so slow before with either Win 7 or Mint that i ended up installing Android on it and using it like i would my phone.  Manjaro has really breathed new life into this netbook.

Great! It should stick so you won't need to run the command again.
