gtk3 3.20 and cinnamon
« on: 20. April 2016, 07:02:54 »
Hello,

I was on testing for a while but the last update including gtk3 3.20 breaks all themes in cinnamon. So I went back to stable and everything is back to normal, but I was wondering what we (cinnamon users) will do when gtk3 3.20 hits the stable repos, which shouldn't be long.

Thanks for your suggestions.

vertex-maia-themes definitely works well... 8) If you prefer blue, you can use the original vertex-themes package. Adwaita is ready, too, and others will follow quickly, I'm convinced ;)

Well I use dark themes, and for me both adwaita-dark and vertex-dark are "broken", especially in nemo and in cinnamon control center. For example, in nemo, the background color of the left panel is lighter at the bottom of it, and in cinnamon control center some parts of the background are also in a lighter grey than the rest. I should have taken a screenshot of this.

No, it looks better with gtk3 3.18 (in my opinion). See below (here with adwaita-dark).

Hm. I see.
This seems to have to do with gtk3.20 itself. I have just tried with a new version of adwaita-dark and there it is the same. Looks like it is not an issue of the themes, if you see what I mean.
But you could try filing a bug on the vertex github: https://github.com/horst3180/Vertex-theme/issues

I was wondering what we (cinnamon users) will do when gtk3 3.20 hits the stable repos, which shouldn't be long....

You'll do what everyone else in the Linux Multiverse is doing--use themes that display best. Eventually the themes you like best will be either updated to 3.20 or will fall by the wayside. Just think of all the cool new themes to come, as graphic artists frantically try to fix what they had no inkling was going to need fixing.

GNOME devs know what is best for us--I'm sure of that.  :o :o

I really wish Cinnamon used QT sometimes

But then what would we do with LXQt?  >:D Cinnamon's claim-to-fame is that it is GTK3 without GNOME's shell. And there are a whole lot of Best of Breed GTK3 applications, so we need some kind of platform to do so. And MATE's strongpoint is it is a GNOME2-like platform for--yep--GTK2 applications. But now MATE's GTK3 implementation is supposedly near-stable last I recall reading.

There is the odd mixture of LXQt using KWin instead of Openbox as the Window Manager, but I haven't played with that...

You could try Budgie, if you want another version of GNOME without the Shell, but it is very young and the interface is still under heavy development.

I haven't heard much from the Deepin crowd, but there is an 'interesting' kind of GTK3/QT mixture. I hope @oberon is doing good things with it. :)

I'm struggling between GNOME & KDE, personally. If my indecision keeps up, I may just go with Xfce & Compiz. After running the Makulu Linux forum for its first 6 months, I pretty much grok Xfce+Compiz.  >:D

I really like Cinnamon, except for the Mint influence. But have you looked at the new Xfce 16.06 dev build PhilM released 04/17? I like the design ideas he stated in the announcement regarding GTK3, GTK2, and Manjaro's future themes.

You can use Arc-Dark or Arc-Darker they integrate with 3.20 very well. if not you have something wrong in your setup.

After reading all of this I'm relieved I went with KDE minimal and not Cinnamon, even though I enjoy both very much.
Will there ever be a "final" gtk release that gets polished and perfected e.g. GTK 4.20/5.20 or something?
Or will this endless endeavour of gtk-induced breakages continue?
I'm assuming the newer gtk version are more memory efficient? Or what are the improvements exactly? Pardon my ignorance
