"unofficial" MATE upmanajaro distro by sergiosc
« on: 18. April 2016, 23:31:20 »
There has been quite a lot of demand manifesting itself in many requests for a Manjaro MATE ISO. I've just found one current on Sourceforge, feel free to test and report: https://sourceforge.net/projects/upmanjaro/files/2016/2016.02.07/
I'm not affiliated with the maintainer, so either he would show up here or you help yourselves and each other with troubleshooting.

Feb 7 '16?  2.9 GB? Something strange about this.

Someone should check it in virtual machine and report if it is legit. But I would not be too afraid of it. The size can be evaluated by taking a look at .pkgs file. 1421 packages are there according to it.

I may be able to do that tomorrow and report back.

BTW, is there any news about a real new Mate ISO?  Maybe after 1.14 shows up in Arch?

My personal opinion is that this ISO is not less "real" than Ringo's. The maintainer has probably less experience, but I would have nothing against it if he becomes sucessful with this project and makes it "official" here. Many will welcome him! :)

For sure, he would be welcome here.

What about that new ISO?  Have you heard anything?

No news whatsoever. I observed from Manjaro's history that "official" Community Editions often start as independent projects and only get into the official Manjaro folder on Sourceforge after some time. So the community wil be probably first to know if s.th. new is about to happen.

Why do you need a new MATE iso?

The old ISO is now 4 months old and needs a giant update after installation.  And, as soon as 1.14 is available that will only get even bigger.

Besides, Mate is now listed as 'dormant' on the forum homepage.  That's not exactly a good selling point.

While I understand the nostalgic feelings about Ringo's MATE edition, I would ask everybody not to hijack this thread which is about a different MATE edition. It is also not about having an ISO with a preinstalled DE or installing from a NET edition.

That's fine - there's a reason for a new one. :)

Well... we're not really selling anything... ;)

Selling, not with respect to money, but the idea/concept that Manjaro is a really good distro that keeps you up to date and offers all the major DEs and more minor ones than you can count.

I loaded that giant ISO into VB.  The update includes 432 files, 1.0 GB of update, and 66 minutes of download time.  No telling what the actual update would take.  So, I bailed out.

It comes with a boat load of S/W and lots of special effects activated.

I can delete or hide the boards for unmaintained community distros as an alternative. Given community editions are spins maintained by members of the community (which should be made clear) it's a bit harsh to judge Manjaro on the same basis. The "dormant" board description also should say what "dormant" means.
