Manjaro dwm Edition
« on: 14. April 2016, 21:21:14 »
Hello!

After playing with Manjaro in VirtualBox and sharing my screens here (https://forum.manjaro.org/index.php?topic=33009.0; thanks for positive feedback  :) ), I tried to build it as my own respin.

I am new to all of this so there was and is some problems, but I decided to share this respin with you anyways.

So, here it is, Manjaro dwm Edition!

Screens:

Download:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/zezik-linux/files/manjaro-dwm-dev1/

MD5sum:

bafb325471e302e406ed9b2a9f0ec4ca  manjaro-dwm-dev1-i686.iso

c16a251b673fa5d51e50dcfe15e0487f  manjaro-dwm-dev1-x86_64.iso

Info:

Login with manjaro/manjaro and then type 'startx'. I was trying to install LightDM but it ignores my config and breaks everything, so... I'll find out how to fix it, don't worry!

Terminal emulator is called st, you can run it (and every other program) by pressing Left Alt + P.

Oh, and about programs, there are none except for dwm, conky and feh (and default net-minimal programs). I will find out which programs are the best and add them in next dev versions.

I hope you guys will like it and together we can create a new cool Manjaro respin!  O:-)

(sorry for my english)

Still alive!

I found out where LightDM problem was, it's OK now...

dwm has its own keyboard shortcuts, I admit I am not aware of most of them...

I don't know what to do, I can do 'dwm help' as another conky session or I can hard_type it as wallpaper image and include blank_wallpaper.jpg without that help, if you know what i mean...

My next goal is to include some text-based programs, I want to have a lightweight distro, I think systemd and NetworkManager are ruining my idea so I must find out if it's ok or I need to find an alternative...

(sorry for my english)

Wow! How comes that nobody has yet commented?!
I'm really intrigued to try it.
I'm sure you will resolve most issues if you plan to further develop this edition.
(A look at bspwm configs might make sense, because it also aims to be as lightweight as possible and CLI based where it makes sense. Also it has a very nice conky integrated in the panel.)
A wallpaper with help seems a more resource friendly solution to me, but you can also develop a kind of terminal based configuration program like JWMconf. I forgot what is there on bspwm, but s.th. similar and various help functions are part of it.

JWM and bspwm are awesome, I will surely take an inspiration from them :)

Cool! I totally missed this initially. I originally consodered doing a dwm edition before I vent for bspwm edition.

For terminal apps, here are a few suggestions:

Code: [Select]
## shell
zsh
zsh-completions
zsh-history-substring-search
dash

##Command line utilities
downgrade
mhwd-tui
bmenu
brandr
pacli
moc
bc
ps_mem
htop
mhwd-chroot
clonezilla
mpv
ranger # The rest are ranger optdepends. No need if you ise st, sonce you will not get image previews anyway.
w3m
atool
poppler

If you want ideas for gui apps, I can suggest some.

I would probably use urxvt over st for superior performance and functionality, but then again st totally makes sense for dwm edition. If you want to make this a full suckless edition, you could consider surf for a browser.

What patches are you using for dwm btw?

I took a look at this distro https://sourceforge.net/projects/dwmx once, but found it a bit difficult to use. I also didn't have much experience other than with Openbox back then.

I tried it once too. Felt too clumsy and custom, and too much dirty dark brown colors. Still, a commendable effort.
