[Daniella] Second preview release
« on: 03. April 2016, 01:00:31 »

It took us another month to prepare this second preview of our upcoming stable release we call Daniella.

The Xfce edition remains our flagship offering and has received the attention it deserves. Few can claim to offer such a polished, integrated and leading-edge Xfce experience. We ship Xfce 4.12 with this release of Manjaro. We mainly focused on polishing the user experience on the desktop and window manager, and on updating some components to take advantage of newly available technologies such as switching to a new theme called Maia, we already using for our KDE edition.

Our KDE edition continues to deliver this powerful, mature and feature-rich desktop environment with a unique look-and-feel, and with the perks of Manjaro's latest tools. We ship now Plasma 5.6 desktop in combination with the latest KDE-Apps 15.12. It was a huge step to get it all playing together smoothly and to give the user experience the same feeling as our KDE4 editions of the past.

Kernel 4.4 LTS is used for this release, such as the latest drivers available to date. Relative to the last installation media release, our tools have been improved and polished.

The Manjaro Settings Manager now provides an easy-to-use graphical interface for installing and removing the many series of kernels we offer. Manjaro's selection of readily available kernels remains the most extensive of all Linux distribution we know of. At the time of this 16.06-pre1 release, twelve kernel-series are available directly from our binary repositories, ranging from the mature & rock-solid 3.10 series to the latest 4.5 release. Such a wide array of available kernel options results in extensive hardware support, getting the most out of your system for you, be it old or new. We also created a kcm module to integrate Manjaro Settings Manager seamlessly into System-Settings of Plasma 5.

With Pamac 3.2 we have made our graphical package manager use the full power of Pacman/ALPM 5.0 release. The updater now support selecting which packages you want to install, transaction functions are now in a library, a custom download function for more control like a longer timeout for slow connection and a better download cancellation is now used, plus we now support the new hooks feature of Pacman.

So please test this release thru and thru and let us know what you think about this preview of Daniella.

We hope you enjoy this release.

Is it easy to replace with OpenRC?

Agree! Best lightweight DE out there is xfce by far. You can do so much with it. Hope MATE and LX catch up soon.

1] @Philm: Thanks for the instructions for how to create an openRC edition. But first, I'll evaluate the pristine versions. Manjaro first came to my attention because of its option to be free of systemd.

2] I have a few suggestions for the download page ( manjaro.github.io )

2.1] Include the iso size along with the checksum. I was particularly surprised at the size of the 'net' edition, weighing in at 572Mb.

2.2] The link to torrents at the bottom of the page for torrents, links to a homepage for sourceforge project "manjarotorrents" instead of the 'files' page for that site, which will be confusing for many people.

2.2.1] The manjarotorrents project homepage should be tweaked to list direct links for individual torrents, or at least to their folder in the project's 'files' section.

2.2.2] Another option would be to link directly to the sourceforge.net 'files' folders from the github.io download page.

2.3] I'm a big advocate for using torrents, as its use increases download speeds world-wide (rant deleted).

2.3.1] Please consider adding direct torrent links ALONGSIDE each direct download link on the github.io page.

2.3.2] Please add torrents for the previews!

3] Bandwidth report: My download speed this morning is awful (NYC region), and has suffered three interruptions in the first 50Mb. The speed range today has been between 5kb/s - 120kb/s

Since Manjaro 0.8, the SO says my bluetooth doesn't exist  :(
Network Card: Intel Wifi Link 5100 AGN
The wifi works fine, but the bluetooth is dead.

Could it be a problem with the Manjaro's hardware detection tool?

Sadly it still does not work on my Skylake laptop.
If I use the default boot option and setting modeset=0 to the graphic drivers it freezes at "Wait for Plymouth Boot Screen to Quit"
If I use the nonfree boot option, still using modeset=0, the boot get stuck at "A start job is running for LiveMedia MHWD Script"

Steam is crashing after install. I run distribution under VirtualBox. Double-click on steam icon (from desktop) has no response.
On Terminal I have the following messages:

@mvlad: I think you have to enable 3d acceleration first to get it going. However I didn't test if steam is working under Virtualbox at all ...

I've got the first 16.06 pre-release on my Thinkpad Yoga 12, works great, thinking of replacing Mint on my desktop.

Will I be able to stick with my (updated) pre-release, or should I start again with the full release when it arrives?
