High RAM usage at start up -- Manjaro 15.09 Xfce
« on: 12. March 2016, 17:38:05 »
I'm experiencing high (~800 MB) RAM usage at startup (out of 1.85 GB available) with Manjaro 15.09 Xfce (updated to 4.4 LTS kernel). On the same HP Presario F767 laptop a pre-existing Mint 17 Xfce in another partition uses much less (~300 MB at start). RAM observations were made via htop.

Searching web and forum turned up some similar posts over the last few years that somehow involved nVidia GPU issues. I'm running the proprietary driver at present—which I noticed getting updated and/or reconfigured when I allowed the kernel to update earlier. Please advise me on how to trouble-shoot and proceed.

It would be nice to give some details of your system inxi -f is a good start

1) 15.09 is old
2) Output of `free -m` ?

And in reply to jonathan specifically ...
> 1) 15.09 is old
Released 6 mos. ago is 'old'? I was under the impression that Manjaro is essentially a rolling release.
[edit] Ah, sorry, I seem to have had the version wrong ...
Code: [Select]
[kevjo@mjF700 ~]$ inxi -S

> 2) Output of `free -m` ?
It didn't like that (as per terminal quote above).
> 3) linuxatemyram.com
Why would Manjaro Xfce be caching a half-a-gig more at startup than Mint Xfce does on the same machine? I've Manjaro LXQt on a netbook and it isn't showing high RAM use at start (incidentally the netbook also multi-boots with Mint Xfce as well and Manjaro LXQt uses less memory at start than Mint on the same device).

I noticed one issue just looking at your posts...

you are running Manjaro 32 bit on that machine, even though it shows as a 64 bit processor, not sure but I'd guess that could be part of the problem.

Hi fraterchaos,

Thanks for the suggestion. That is something to consider. When I first started playing with Linux desktops five or six years ago prevalent advice was use 32 bit unless you really need to access more than 4 GB RAM and such (regardless of CPU capability). I think porting stuff to 64 bit was still a work-in-progress at the time. I've only recently began to take in that things have changed and in fact 64 bit is probably better supported. I suppose the convenience of having a single .iso to test on my 32 bit machines as well has likely also been influencing me. But I think it's finally sunk in that it's time for me to adapt and use 64 bit. Regardless of whether it ends up affecting startup RAM on this laptop.

I've been reading up on some recent releases (Manjaro LXQt, Architect Linux, Pacbang) and haven't invested a great deal into this Xfce setup as yet. Time to give something  a go in 64 bit. May back up some configs and try 64 bit Manjaro Xfce first just to compare. I'll post back here with the outcome if I do.

I though perhaps I might be experiencing a common nVidia quirk or some such ... still a mystery at this point suppose... I kinda' like what the Manjaro team has done with the Xfce edition overall so I think I'll end up  running it on something-or-other. This somewhat RAM challenged laptop may end up with openbox, enlightenment, LXQt, JWM, or some such.

yeah, I'm no expert, but I think now that 64 bit has gotten to the point where if you can use it, you should.

I can't advise you on most of the DE's but I used to run Openbox and I liked it a lot, before I got a faster computer and switched to XFCE.
