available manjaro plymouth themes
« on: 01. February 2016, 20:54:27 »
While it needs a little bit of fumbling to install Plymouth for the first time, or to remove it if it is already installed it is actually no big deal at all to change the theme of your Plymouth screen when it is already pre-installed, which is of course the case with Xfce, KDE and also some community editions.
Here's a collection of the available manjaro-themes in our repos and what they look like:

The classic one everybody knows, of course: plymouth-theme-manjaro-elegant
(this one is also available as plymouth-theme-manjaro-elegant-hidpi for high-resolution)

Slightly different: plymouth-theme-manjaro-very-elegant (yes, it's really called like that! ;) )

an older one: plymouth-theme-manjaro (note: the theme to activate is in fact called 'manjaro-logo'!)

the KDE theme: plymouth-theme-manjaro-redefined-bsplash

ringo's Cinnamon-theme: plymouth-theme-manjaro-extra-elegant...

...and oberon's slightly different variation:

The matching theme for Numix Reborn, plymouth-theme-manjaro-circle

Deepin 15.12 came with plymouth-theme-manjaro-deepin

And the newest one, plymouth-theme-manjaro-deepin-circle is going to accompany Deepin 16.02

All you have to do to change your plymouth-theme is to install the respective package of course, and then you have to run
Code: [Select]
sudo plymouth-set-default-theme -R <theme-name>Here you'll have to use the theme-name without the leading "plymouth-theme", so for example:
Code: [Select]
sudo plymouth-set-default-theme -R manjaro-very-elegantDone! 8)

To list your installed plymouth-themes you can run
Code: [Select]
plymouth-set-default-theme -l

Very nice.

Quick question: Does anyone have any info on how much extra boot time, goes with plymouth? Compared to without.

Reason is, I have it disabled on my ISO, and was wondering if I should enabled it for my 16.03 with one of the great looking themes. But if it takes more than a few extra seconds to boot because of it, I'm not gonna do it.
Desktop PC: Manjaro XFCE 15.12 (stable, kernel 4.4)
Private Laptop: Manjaro Strit 16.03 (unstable, kernel 4.6)
Work Laptop: Manjaro Strit 16.03 (stable, kernel 4.4)
Netbook: Arch Linux XFCE/LXqt (i686, kernel 4.0)

Thanks! I had always wondered what some of these looked like after seeing the available themes listed in pamac. With your tips, I was able to change out my theme with no issues whatsoever.

Quick question: Does anyone have any info on how much extra boot time, goes with plymouth? Compared to without.
If I'm reading that correctly (am I ?? ???), I think it takes about 1 or 2 seconds on my system?
Code: [Select]
$ systemd-analyze blame | grep "plymouth"
          2.006s lightdm-plymouth.service
          1.785s plymouth-quit-wait.service
           266ms plymouth-start.service
            16ms plymouth-read-write.service
lightdm-plymouth.service is replacing lightdm.service, so that one doesn't really count I guess ;)

and after installation run
Code: [Select]
sudo plymouth-set-default-theme -R manjaro-gnometo activate it ^-^
