Abiword rapid cursor flicker and disappearance
« on: 07. January 2016, 21:59:39 »
Hello - Had the opportunity to boot a live USB of Manjaro Fluxbox (manjaro-fluxbox-15.12-i686.iso) on a few nearby laptops (IBM T43, T60, Dell D620, namely)....

When I launch Abiword (and get the default blank page) the text cursor behaves/looks normal. As soon as I start to type the cursor flickers in a rapid/erratic manner. If I type and then stop for a few seconds (11 seconds approximately) the cursor disappears altogether. It will return upon typing again however. I am unfamiliar with Abiword behaving this way. I also don’t know how to remedy the issue, which may be considered largely cosmetic for some. Nonetheless, this happens on all my laptops and it may not be limited to Manjaro Fluxbox (I recall Abiword under MJWM doing something similar). Ideas? Oh yes, and I'm very new to the Manjaro world. Thanks, sligo

Hm. Weird stuff!
I have just tried Abiword in my i3 install: No problems at all.
In Fluxbox in virtualbox I do get a strange flickering - not of the cursor but of the top part of the page ... ??? quite annoying, indeed!
I have tried downgrading Abiword - no difference...
Don't have the slightest idea what this can be :o :(

You know, I just searched my problem with Abiword on LXQt and wanted to suggest to try the other version gtk2 or gtk3 depending on what is installed. So try gtk2 version. :) But it had no equasion editor last time.

From the information I found this issue seems to be graphic driver related - that would explain why I have in in virtualbox and not on my laptop.
I can confirm that in vritualbox abiword-gtk2 works fine and without flickering ;) :)
Just: When you install it with yaourt you will want to uninstall boost after installation, which is a build dependency only but 147MB :o :o in size ;)
I will provide abiword-gtk2 in the manjaro repos now and push it to all branches as a bugfix. So who has problems with this flickering can replace it with that version.

The package itself is even 5MB lighter than abiword with gtk3 :) 8)

Abiword-gtk2 certainly does the trick. Thanks for the solution!
