manjaro-i3 15.12
« on: 29. December 2015, 15:48:38 »
i3-15.12 images are now available at
https://sourceforge.net/projects/manjarolinux/files/community/i3/2015.12/

Thanks to all the community input and thanks to @Chrysostomus's and @excalibur1234's brilliant work this latest release includes a complete set of command line applications together with their GUI alternatives.
It now includes the awesome CLI settings manager Bmenu with package manager Pacli.
Filebrowser Ranger and music-player Moc have been added, pre-configured and customized.
Also we have cooked up scripts to automatically add and remove Pulseaudio on top of the default Alsa installation together with the necessary config being adjusted and Volumeicon being exchanged with Pa-applet on the fly. 8)

Again i3 comes with Systemd or OpenRC of course.

Features:

* i3-wm 4.11 (next-branch) including i3-gaps
* Dmenu-manjaro 4.6 recency- and terminal-aware and mouse-interactive with separate config-file for appearance and terminal preferences
* i3status-manjaro 2.9
* icon-themes AwOken-light and Maia and gtk-themes i3-dust and i3-dark
* optimized Urxvt
* Pcmanfm / Ranger
* Xarchiver
* Palemoon
* Hexchat
* Pinta
* Gpicview
* Qpdfview
* Clipit
* Mousepad, Nano, Vi
* VLC media player
* Pamac, Pacli
* Lxappearance
* Nitrogen
* Compton
* Arandr for screen- and multihead settings
* Manjaro-Printer
* Htop, Tree, IsoUSB, Gparted, Mhwd-chroot,
* Manjaro-Welcome
* Manjaro-Setting-Manager and Bmenu
* LightDM
* i3exit with blurlock
* Xautolock
* Alsa with Alsamixer and Volumeicon / exchangeable (additional 32MB) for Pulseaudio plus Pavucontrol and Pa-applet
* Network- and Powermanager
* Yaourt and base-devel group
* Thus, Calamares and CLI-Installer as usual :)

Thank you all for being such an awesome, creative and productive community! :D

Enjoy!

Awesome. I am loving this i3 spin...

I have some basic questions. I already have the manjaro-i3 edition installed. When an update like this comes out, only my already installed packages will get updated, but I won't get any of the new goodness. What is the best way to get the new features?

As an example, you mentioned new command line tools. Is it just a matter of finding those packages in the manjaro repo and installing them? (i.e. Ranger, Moc, Bmenu, Pacli, etc.) By doing so, will I also get all the pre-configuration and customization that you mentioned?

What about the Pulseaudio scripts you mentioned?

Well, it depends...
The new packages you will need are indeed
Code: [Select]
sudo pacman -S bmenu pacli ranger moc
With the config it's a bit more tricky... ::)
There is a new folder for ranger to go into ~/.config
https://github.com/manjaro/manjaro-tools-iso-profiles/tree/devel/community/i3/i3-overlay/etc/skel/.config

moc has a folder ~/.moc
https://github.com/manjaro/manjaro-tools-iso-profiles/tree/devel/community/i3/i3-overlay/etc/skel
and a custom theme-file in /usr/share/moc/themes/
https://github.com/manjaro/manjaro-tools-iso-profiles/tree/devel/community/i3/i3-overlay/usr/share/moc/themes

The pulse/alsa scripts install_pulse and rm_pulse live in /usr/local/bin
https://github.com/manjaro/manjaro-tools-iso-profiles/tree/devel/community/i3/i3-overlay/usr/local/bin
BUT in order for them to work you need to adjust your ~/.i3/config to contain exactly these lines:
Code: [Select]
exec --no-startup-id volumeicon
bindsym $mod+Ctrl+m exec terminal -e 'alsamixer'
#exec --no-startup-id pulseaudio
#exec --no-startup-id pa-applet
#bindsym $mod+Ctrl+m exec pavucontrol

Is the systemd iso still being uploaded?  Will you post here when ready?

Hmmm... Thanks for the comprehensive reply... but I don't want to have to bother you with every update. Is this the only way to update a current installation? Is there a way for a user to find this information on his own?

What does everyone else do?

Yeah - it's sloooow, sorry ;)
Systemd i686 will take about 2 more hours and x86_64 will have to run overnight...

@huladaddy, it's no problem at all to explain it here once :)
In any case the skeleton folder here will always show you the files the way they are for a freshly installed user.

Once per update? ;)

This link you provided looks great. I'll have lots of fun poking around there...

So between your "changelog" above in the OP, and the skeleton folder, we should be able to keep up to date? I am quite surprised there isn't an easier or more automated way to keep our installations current.

I'm happy bmenu and pacli got included, that way we'll get more bug reports on them.  :D
