pamac gui not present in xfce4 net install
« on: 14. November 2015, 23:31:58 »
I have installed xfce4 and pamac from a net install iso:
https://forum.manjaro.org/index.php?topic=28326.0

I am looking for pamac, I see something in panel menu > system > software update

Is there a way to get access to the pamac gui:

hi francois-e

Pamac would be indicated by System > Add/Remove Software + Software Update

..or move your cursor to far top right of screen ... to the line of icons ... right click 'star with arrow' drop down menu will give you Pamac option or update ..

then .... install goodies :)

(sorry for the edits - multitasking (ie. reducing attention span to all actions i am taking ;p - it ends in a pile of lollypop sticks!)

Add/remove software is there but will not start the pacman gui.

The red start in the panel is there but after booting into the xfce environment fades away. If I log out and then login it will come back but will fade away once more.

Any additional strategy?

Thanks.

hmm
... strange as it sounds ... in the last day or so ... ive been
experiencing 'hang' when starting Pamac (sometimes five or six seconds
... or until i get bored and reboot) ... id assumed it was to do with
some packages id installed, but still have to configure.
But ... As you are a new install ... maybe there is an issue elsewhere
...

will do more tests ... but far more capable, will probably solve your
issue before i find it ;)

two remedys to try ...
https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=Pacman_Tips (ranking mirrors a first)
see if you can install Pacli https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/pacli/ via command or manual, and work from there

I found the command line instructions for pamac. The output is:
https://forum.manjaro.org/index.php?topic=3183.0

[fl@manjaro ~]$ sudo pamac-manager
[sudo] password for fl:
pamac-manager: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgtk-3.so.0: undefined symbol: g_param_spec_get_name_quark
[fl@manjaro ~]$

Great cue. Thanks:
Code: [Select]
saxonbeta:
The GTK 3.18 update promises to be a little nigthmare. Some GTK based software refuses to launch (plank, gnome-chem-utils) and gives this error:

--- Code: ---plank: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgtk-3.so.0: undefined symbol: g_param_spec_get_name_quark
--- End code ---
Downgrading to GTK 3.16 solves the problems.

So I have to downgrade the package:
Downgrading to GTK 3.16 solves the problems.

Never downgraded a package:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Downgrading_packages#Downgrading_the_kernel

But I will try to use the arch linux archive to do so as the pacman cache method is not possible.
http://ala.seblu.net/packages/g/gtk3/

[manjaro tmp]# ls
gtk3-3.16.7-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz  systemd-private-be6c47612ebb40d1af7680e6b8827599-ntpd.service-yOwFDA
pacman -U gtk3-3.16.7-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

And then:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Downgrading_packages#Downgrading_the_kernel
temporarily add it to the IgnorePkg section of pacman.conf, until the difficulty with the updated package is resolved.

Does this sound right? (I do not want to reintall the whole thing)

Thanks.

@withjaro or others:
Is this procedure of mine to downgrade is valid before I use it?

Are pamac and octopi both able to act as frontend for AUR in addition to pacman? octopi seems to be able to be a frontend for pacaur:

much is dependent on libraries and configurations - and correctly,i am not able to give you comprehensive guidance ... theres many options to an issue, the skill is being able to pinpoint the relevant one ;)
Just using and exploring fillls in the gaps :)

i have almost no experience with gtk3, but you definitely do not need to downgrade the kernel.

there is a difference between the manjaro and arch kernel. it is possible to use the arch kernel in manjaro (i have done it myself a while ago), but it is not recommended. this can result in strange problems when your programs and kernel get updated in different intervals.

look here (and at the links mentioned at the bottom) to see how you can downgrade gtk3:
