manjaro-i3-0.9.0dev (unstable) ready for testing
« on: 27. June 2015, 11:45:22 »
Here comes the test version of manjaro-i3-0.9.0

Download 32bit
Download 64bit

My main development focus at the moment is lightening up the system.
The 32bit-version boots to 170MB at the moment, already a lot better... - yeah, still some work to be done here ... ;)
I have redesigned the desktop with conky, dmenu and statusbar - getting darker and more spatial  8)

Added the patched dmenu supporting xft-fonts that can finally be blended nicely into any layout.
I have dropped the gtk-menu this time since I realized that once you adapt to using shortcuts and dmenu you will very likely not need it ( - I think). If you like it, just install it afterwards. It's in our repos now anyway... :)
This version runs without pulseaudio with pure Alsa and Volumeicon in the tray.

Hexchat has been added and preconfigured to fit the overall design.
Dunst is now in charge of notifications (yes Ringo, finally! :D )
Aaaaaand, of course our new installer Calamares is included :)

I'm curious about your feedback and hope you have fun testing this preview.

Loaded in vbox, never used i3, looks good.  Will have some dozy questions later as about to go to work, but the first one is - How do you reload the config if I change a key binding? :)

Missed it, scanned past as it appeared to be in windows border section  :-[  will play around and get back, never "got" tiling managers, time to learn.

If I wanted to install i3, configured the same as you have it,  along side my current plasma install rather than in vBox is that documented??

No problem at all! That config file has become quite a long read meanwhile... ;)

If you are talking about a dual session in one installation, that sounds like an interesting idea and I wonder ... it should be possible ...
A lot easier to achieve would be a dual boot installation with a shared /home partition, or, even cleaner: You could just install a dual boot to play around with the new DE and your files in the other installation are still accessible by mounting the other partitions. Pcmanfm is set up to mount them automatically anyway...

My ~30min testing so far is all positive, really great job on this.
Only thing i maybe disagree is the use of compton, but that needs more testing.

:) keep up the good work

Thank you, LucaB! :)
What is it about Compton you don't like?
To switch it off you can simply use the shortcut mod+t, If you don't like the behaviour you can change it in ~/.config/compton.conf
If you want to get rid of Compton for whatever reason but still get transparent terminal windows you can open your ~/.Xresources and add these three lines:
Code: [Select]
URxvt*inheritPixmap:                  true
URxvt*transparent:                    true
URxvt*shading:                        130
(needs logout/login to be effective)
I will include this and comment it out, so people can easily activate that.
The downside of this fake transparency of course is that you will not see what is actually behind the window, like other windows or Conky(!). What it does is only render the wallpaper into the terminal window  8)
Have fun! :)

Awesome fast.
My first installation with bootctl.
Tried adding shortcut (bindsym $mod+d exec foo) but when taken up by other apps, warning is not shown.
After logoff and logon, then only warning is shown.
Maybe I am not used to it, but finding it hard to create app shortcuts.
Otherwise, excellent!
Congrats and well done.
Cheers.

Hi gohlip! :)
To apply the changes in the config you have to reload it with mod+Shift+c - that will also show you any errors/conflicts :)

Hey thanks for the hint. Lots to learn for a novice like me on i3.
All the best.

Just uploaded four new ISOs (systemd/openrc//32bit/64bit) with a few updates.
Apart from a few little fixes, formatting and syntax have been adapted for Conky 1.10 and replaced light-locker with i3lock plus a nifty little script to lock/autolock by blurring your screen ;D

Have fun testing!: https://sourceforge.net/projects/manjaro-i3/files/
