Do you have any update on why the website backend is getting so slow, pushing to the 504 timeout error ? (probably a database growth added to some too tight configuration on mysql)

Can you be more specific, please ?

As long as the issue is not solved, isn't there a way to set a message on top when starting the new topic?

Yep. The error points to some of the website infrastructure component getting too slow. If don't know which webserver is used, but for sure, Mysql is the database server behind it. To ensure the site does not get blocked indefinitely, you have a timeout setting that make the website/php engine throws an error (and killing the sub-process) that waits too long for a response From Mysql.

The topic seems created correctly, and it involves multiple tables additions in database tables (at least, smf_topics, smf_messages), if the web server throws the error, it's because MySQL does not respond after the creation, or just after (to show the topic created, it has to launch a "SELECT..." request based on the topic id it just created). It may have appeared after a buggy update on one of the hosting components.

I don't know how to adjust settings, as I don't know the database size, the hosting infrastructure (a dedicated server with all the stuff on it, a shared hosting with web server separated from the database).

As long as the issue is not solved, isn't there a way to set a message on top when starting the new topic?

I bet it should be a good thing to calm down the rush.

Last night "one click" timed-out for me 5 or 6 times.
Today, after a couple more 504's, i managed to make two posts (one being a duplicate) and another 504 but not one message saying my post(s) had been made.
The only reason i stopped re-entering my post was because i had opened a new tab and noticed there were two posts ... yet before i had clicked refresh there were no posts!

Opening an new tab and checking posts is the only way I have found to determine for certain that my post made it.

p.s.
Why not simply let user delete their own posts?  Probably best if only for the first 5 or 10 minutes.
If you did that, when a user saw they had made a duplicate post they could delete it.

Just a thought form a noobie.

If you start a new topic you will always get the 504 error, it's a bug with the db on the forum. It doesn't happen when you make replies on a topic.
After posting wait until the error and browse manually to your topic again, it will be there.

Or, in my case, two posts.

If you get 504 timeout, do NOT resend. Check forum to see if your post appears, if not ONLY then resend.
Works for me. :)

Best regards.

Sorry but that is exactly what i did each time i posted last night (and again today) and each time it was not there and i had to re-type it.  On the third attempt i typed the post into an editor then pasted it.  After all, i was a noob here and for all i knew, posting was some sort of typing speed test.
