If everyone can do it, then why does it matter, why block it? Wouldn't those people who allegedly do it be tired of it pretty quickly?

It's not like I care about distrowatch, never used it, but then again I never really cared about popularity contests.

Nothing new with DW when it comes to popularity. However, It's still a good place to estimate how many people are using a system, Or If I feel like having a good lookover at some new distros. But I would rather just do it myself then to use DW as a reference for most things.

Quote
How can he tell if people are pumping it?` What does "pumping" even mean? Never heard of a term like that.

I think I dislike that guy already.
Reminds me of the "pump and dump" method that people on ebay do to make a profit. On Wikipedia it means ""Pump and dump" (P&D) is a form of microcap stock fraud that involves artificially inflating the price of an owned stock through false and misleading positive statements" Though in this case, it's just ratings instead of money.

I just don't see the point of inflating ratings.

Edit: Too many grammar issues. Fixed I think.

There is no evidence that this behavior is form us (Manjaro community). It might be a 'favor' from others in order to achieve this effect - freezing Manjaro's rank.

Distrowatch rankings are a metric used by people who do not understand open source.
Imagine mostly by reporters, bloggers and marketing people who jump at anything,
that mentions a rating of a name or a brand.

The best use I have found for Distrowatch is to find out what is happening in the open source
(well, not all, Pmagic is now a pay version) distro world. Also to search for potential distros.

Popularity means more people are attracted by "DER BLINKENLICHTEN".

The Distrowatch "charts" are just what's been happening recently, like music charts or TV ratings. They have little relevance to who is using a particular distro for their main stuff every day. Manjaro jumps up those charts when there is a new update, same as Ubuntu or anyone else. I like Distrowatch because it lets me know about new releases but it is not an indicator of who is using what. If I spend a few months being happy with Manjaro then I won't look at Distrowatch and I am sure it's the same for Fedora or SUSE users who are quite happy with their own distro. Do your own thing and have strength in your own self-belief!  :)

V,

I'm not sure exactly when it started, but I received a friendly email from DW at the end of last week, saying they were going to freeze the count until the behavior abated. I challenged this in a relaxed way, saying that it is rather punitive & extreme, as well as being based on the unproven assumption that someone is doing it to benefit - rather than harm - Manjaro. He subsequently messaged me back, saying that he was going to put a more tailored solution in place that seeks to ignore questionable hits that may be attempts to pump. I thanked him for that & the conversation ended off well.

DW is not the be all & end all but one thing it certainly is & that's a big source of new users discovering Manjaro. It has some value & the tables position is worth protecting - but not obsessing over  ;)

Go well all.

Maybe we could turn things upside down and take Manjaro of DW and make a huge publicity stunt over it. :D

Thier has always been a lot of strange results on DW  some new distros seem to rise through the ranks rapidly yet don't have website forums etc. and others which seem to be well supported with quite active web sites and forums stagnate and slip down and others that rarely move..
Its always just been like an easier way of finding distros  than typing into google. for me.

their domains does not  work for me, both .com and .org.

Also Manjaro should be in top 5 that's my opinion.

I like to check DW, now and then, just to see what's new, and maybe the odd reviews there, but that's all it's good for.
I have never dl'ed from DW itself, as I'm sure most people don't either.
But how does DW know what the "reaL" rankings/hits are, if most people are downloading from the maintainer's site, instead of DW ?
I never could really understand how DW really works, other than, what I suspect is, from a business model, "advertiser's" are just paid "lobbyists" - so, whoever (anonymously) Ad's the most, gets the most hits, ... -LoL.

Would you like another "Mint" ?
;)

DW does not count downloads (you can't d/l from them directly anyway) but page hits. Yes, that's inaccurate. But then there isn't really any alternative. At least it shows a trend.

Thanks for that.

I wonder if they ran out of money to pay the bill
