Please don't pump Manjaro on DistroWatch.
« on: 07. July 2014, 14:10:52 »
Hi all.

One or more individuals have been trying to artificially pump Manjaro's rankings on DistroWatch. This first came to our attention quite a few months back & the result was that Ladislav froze Manjaro's counter - this meant that the project clocked a big fat "ZERO" for several weeks & negatively affected the rankings.

Ladislav messaged me again recently to say that due to further pumping behaviour recently, he plans on zeroing again. I wrote back to him & he has subsequently agreed to use a more discreet method.

If anyone feels tempted to "do Manjaro a favour" by pumping the DW rankings, please don't. You will only harm Manjaro. One hit per user per day - that's the maximum acceptable.

Thanks & more power to you all.

Ruziel.

I've been on DW several times and downloaded different iso in one day. So you're saying this is a bad thing?

I have  to add though;  nowadays I don't use DW for that anymore, I download from our site. DW is for staying up tp date on what's happening only  :)

no,  but a) everything is available on manjaro.org

b) I think this has more to do with auto-refreshers.  The way 4chan floods polls and such.

Visiting the Manjaro page @ DW is fine - downloading etc. This is more about people trying to fabricate "hits" via various methods that I don't understand.

Basically, just keep to "normal" use.

Thanks,

There are always ways of doing artificial pumping without getting caught. It is an unfortunate problem for him of course.

Distro Watch shows MINT in the number one position.

Oh yeah, they are advertising MINT:
"Get the brand-new release of Linux Mint 17 on a DVD ($5.95) or USB drive ($14.95) from OSDisc.com"

I dont think there is a real connection between these things.

I don't think whoever is bumping cares about this thread - I occasionally check there to see what's going on (very rarely recenty).

Funny thing is distrowatch is down now:

whoever is bumping cares [nothing] about this thread

I've been to "distrowatch", 3-times in 7-months, it's not relevant to what distro's people are using 24/7.

How can he tell if people are pumping it?` What does "pumping" even mean? Never heard of a term like that.

I think I dislike that guy already.

@Aryvandaar
I believe they had problems with an automated machine doing 100s of hits a day.  from the same IP.. probably many other distros have the same thing but they blocked all hits on manjaro for quite a while.
