Manjaro NET tutorials?
« on: 26. June 2014, 15:04:46 »
Hi guys, I had a wee look around the forum and can't find a topic for Manjaro NET, I am messing with it here in a VM determined to educate myself but I cant find any tutorials and I think I may have to reinstall on the VM as I installed xorg, xfdesktop and yaourt form the cli, when I tried to install kwin I got two errors 1) Cannot find the strip binary required for object file stripping. 2)Makepkg was unable to build kwin.  I ran the yaourt to install kwin, don't even know if I did the right thing installing anything but my philosophy was, get it all on and configure it later lol

Just messing around as I say just trying to learn  ;)

Cheers,
Darso.

Hi,

If I understand fine, with manjaro net-edition, you don't have to install xorg & all the stuff, it's already there !
You have to install a DE (kde, xfce, ect) & a display manager, enable it with systemctl and it's almost (in theory  ;)) done.

kwin is in the repos, no need to build it from the AUR... same as the entirety of the KDE desktop.

watch this kid doing it. it is really simple:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUnygjHSEKs

if you are not sure what to do, look into the arch wiki. it is the best documentation you can ever get:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KDE
there are slight differences between arch and manjaro (and as already mentioned manjaro does a lot of stuff for you), but i am sure you will figure it out.

ROFL  I feel real stupid after watching that vid. The kid can't be very old and talking about noobs and stuff.  I laughed my a** off. But he obviously knew what he was doing. Now I just feel old and dumb   :D :D :D

Have you tried the following instructions on the Manjaro wiki?

https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=Installation_Guide_for_the_NET_Edition_0.8.2

It is based upon 0.8.2 version but everything should still be relevant with the latest version.
Full time GNU/Linux user since 2003, prior to that was duel booting Windows (98) and GNU/Linux (Mandrake).

Hi guys, thank you all for the info, had to nip out and do school runs, wiki guides are great.  I'm sure I will be able to solve it, eventually lol when I do I will class it as an my next level of learning and do it a dozen times or so, so I don't forget lol

BTW that kid  in the video looks like he's up for a pretty big future, he makes it look so easy.

Thanks again guys, next steps coming up.

Cheers,
Darso.

For yaourt I think you have to install base-devel package group. The post installation consist of setting up the network if the network configuration was not saved from the installation, installing a login manager, activate login manager and a desktop enviroment.

https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=Install_Display_Managers

The login manager is the hardest part.

Use this command to enable the display manager you installed (replace {display manager} with --> mdm or gdm or kdm or lxdm etc).
Code: [Select]
sudo systemctl enable {display manager}.service -f

Hi Aryvandaar, thanks for the info, I had it up and running there with xfce and lxdm, managed to get the de running and got lxdm installed as a service, the only thing I didn't use from your command was the -f, had this done before I seen this thanks to the kid in the video lol, could you tell me what the -f does please?

Your knowledge is greatly appreciated thank you, all of you.  :D

Cheers,
Darso.

Hi Ayceman, I couldn't find it in the repos in octopi or indeed pacman, had to use the yaourt to find it at all then it just gave me those errors.

Darso.

the -f is --force option
u might need this if you change your existing display manager.
For the first display manager, you won't need.

Hi guys, thanks so much for the help.  Sorry for the noob like approach but I really am lol, btw, how come it says "novice" on a lot of well edulinuxed people's profiles.

Code: [Select]
sudo pacman -S base-develHit enter (default all)

The base-devel packages contains what is needed to built things with yaourt.

EDIT: That worked perfectly, thanks again Aryvandaar.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but I've been trying to do a net install today too...

....but after i install gnome, etc and enable gdm and try to reboot.....it appears it's working, doesn't shoot out any errors but it ends up freezing and i can't do anything.....

sudo systemctl enable gdm.service -f was the command i used....any ideas as to what im doing wrong? and yes i feel really dumb after watching that kid do it lol

Edit, just to be clear on what I'm doing...install gnome, gdm and then enable gdm and reboot.  I figured everything else I can install after I get it up and running.  So maybe that's my problem I'm not installing something that I need to?
