Remember that every kernel has to be maintained. And the guy who maintains the kernels can't do anything else. So yes, it would be great to have as many kernels as possible to choose from, but then this means that something else won't be fixed or an awesome new feature won't be implemented.

I have always wondered where the line should be between old hardware and hardware that is too old. I realize its a moving target, but at some point isn't the work exceeding the value gained? I am not saying that we shouldn't support older hardware, I'm just asking how far back and for how long we should keep older kernels.

i remember that one of the later kernels (3.12, or 3.13) dropped support (=the drivers) for about 20 year old 486-er PCs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_80486

therefore, even the latest kernels still support really old computers. even if you still use such an old computer, manjaro would NOT run on it.

i just cannot see a case, in which the latest LTS (=almost bug-free) linux kernel cannot be used on a pc, which is able to run manjaro.

3.11 is patched and validated for the purposes of Canonical, not for those of Arch.

And for the team of Linus, it's EOL.

Do we have the same patches than Canonical ?

Kernel patches are distribution agnostic and relate to security and stability.

yes.

the only reason for using an older kernel is the stability (=less obvious bugs - most of them got already fixed).

new kernels contain more and better drivers (especially for modern hardware).

I have tested Linux 3.10 LTS series and 3.13 so far

I have to say that 3.10 runs much smoother than 3.13...

Especially in some games you can easily see the difference between the two kernels...
with 3.13 you can observe lag spikes etc but this is not happening with 3.10

Anyway my opinion about the kernels is

Keep up maintain the latest Kernel available
Maintain the latest LTS Kernel
Maintain the latest kernel SES series (maintained by Canonical)

So in short you just maintain 3 Kernels and have everyone happy

You're the one claiming that because Canonical is maintaining the kernel it's not suitable. I may not be an expert, but I know a thing or two about the structure of a Linux OS and phil did actually respond to this in post 14 of this thread.

3.13 is proving to be surprisingly smooth so far, on my machine....

As for 3.13 - I have noticed that as well.
