Ok. good you solved it like that for now. What I meant was to install linux41 because that one doesn't amdgpu in the first place ;) It was meant as an emergency measure ;) Your workaround makes certainly more sense! ;D
manjaro is addictive ::)

This release for kernel 4.4.8-1 appears to have the most stable non-free catalyst driver (linux44-catalyst  1:15.201.1151-9).

amdgpu has experimental support for sea island. its a good thing that manjaro makes it possible to test this, but it should not be the default :D

post me the output of mhwd. Check also this. I got a bug report regarding this on our mailing list. Therefore I enabled it also for these cards.

But if you say it is broken on your end, it makes not so much sense. Also try to add following kernel parameter before booting, so we can see if you get a valid picture: amdgpu.exp_hw_support=1.

My problem remains the same. When I turn on the computer for the first time, I put my password in SDDM, the screen is frozen. I have to go to a TTY, and then back to the graphical session. However, I close the session, I restart my password and no problem loading the desktop.

Firefox still looks awful :(

Just updated machine with AMD A-Series APU from k4.1.16-1 to k4.1.23-1

OS boots faster.

Video is stable and responsive even with window maximized. CPU temperature does ramp-up initially (and with jumping to different video time or launching different app) but heat is removed by the heat sink quickly. Not sure how a stock heat sink would fare as the stock heat sink is half the size of the one being used.

Then upgraded kernel to 4.4.8-1.

Catalyst non-free driver delivers stable and responsive video with temperature ramp-up initially.

So far OK.

But if you say it is broken on your end, it makes not so much sense. Also try to add following kernel parameter before booting, so we can see if you get a valid picture: amdgpu.exp_hw_support=1.
this line wont change anything... however i've figured out how it will work:

first we need a newer version of "linux-firmware" (i've tried it with master, so this will work for sure) (i'm not sure how important this actually is)

secound we need to blacklist "radeon" /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-radeon.conf
Code: [Select]
blacklist radeonnote: THIS IS IMPORTANT - otherwise the kernel will load the radeonsi driver instead of amdgpu and XOrg amdgpu ddx wont work with radeonsi, so x can not start

third just to be sure, load amdgpu /etc/modules-load.d/mhwd-gpu.conf
Code: [Select]
##
## Generated by mhwd - Manjaro Hardware Detection
##
amdgpu

and of course
Code: [Select]
mkinitcpio -p linux46 #or whatever your kernel is
now a restart and amdgpu will work.

1. Please explain the difference between radeons and amdgpu.

Both of my machines are using radeons: Radeon HD 6450 and Radeon HD 8470D

2. If the manjaro installer defaults to amdgpu, how would someone with radeons install non-free catalyst drivers?

amdgpu is the next generation graphicsdriver. its the only one that will have features like vulkan somewhere in the future.

lets hope its not possible anymore cause manjaro finally shipps with xorg 1.18 or 1.19. catalyst is EOL, because it wont support xorg 1.8 anymore. they now build a new "pro" driver that is based on amdgpu. so if you need pro features, you'll need a newer graphicscard.

and just to say this once more ..... for sea island manjaro needs to use "radeon" by default. amdgpu is *not* an option for them, its experimental.

So I should remove the IDs from amdgpu for now for these cards? Please comment also here.

Code: [Select]
The affected PCI IDs are 0x6900, 0x6901, 0x6902, 0x6903, and 0x6907 for the Topaz/Iceland GPUs that are marked as experimental.

I tried Manjaro KDE 16.06 Pre 3 64-bit running non-free.  Notes:

1.  In the live environment, everything was in the Maia color scheme expect the title bars (they were light blue).
2.  (Random) The last install of Manjaro I did with Thus created a swap equal to my RAM (5.3GB).  Calamares in this version created a slightly larger swap at 8.8 GB.  I never noticed the two installers create different size swap paritions.
3.  4.4 kernel was extremely sluggish loading the desktop.  At one point the screen was black and a white rectange appeared where the welcome window appears.
4.  4.4 was also sluggish shutting down.
5.  I tried installing kernel 3.18 through kernel system settings.  The command finishes "done" but did not install the kernel.  I installed it through Octopi.

Feature request:  I'd like to see an option during install to choose the default kernel you want to install.  If I already know which kernel is going to work for me, I'd like to start with it.
