Openbox - Release date and new features added!
« on: 10. January 2013, 00:48:17 »
Hi Guys,

The 64-bit version of the Openbox Flavour is planned to be released officially this Friday 11th January. Not sure about the 32-bit version, due to the glibc / virtualbox driver issue (i.e. it works fine, but just not in a VM without forcing vesa mode).

In addition to the fixes for the other identified issues, new features have also been added:

1. Display / multiple monitor configuration added
Doh! Should have included this in the first place. The config menu now includes a simple application called Arandr to change your display resolution, and to manage multiple monitors. Very easy to use, and works very well.

2. Optional Launcher added
Fixing the volume issue by using the xfce4-mixer resulted in downloading the xfce4 panel as a dependency. Rather than hide it like one would an embarrassing relative, it has instead been pre-configured as an optional - auto-hiding - launcher. The revised openbox guide - with corrected spellings  :-[ - details how to do this. Of course you will be able to easily change it as you wish; starting off with it as shown may just make life a bit easier than starting with a stub.

Very exciting, Carl!

OT: OS4 just dropped something called OpenDesktop. At first, I thought it was an Openbox edition. Turns out it's a customized Xfce desktop.  ::)  Go figure.

What was the volume problem Carl?

I used Volti with Tint2 & it worked fine, loading into the Tint2 tray. You can call it from either ~/.xinitrc or from the ~/.config/openbox/autostart file.

I've used it with both the on-board sound with Tint2 & currently without Tint2 in "Trayer" on the Openbox dock & using the HDMI stuff from the GPU.

It would have to be lighter than using the xfce4-panel & plugin.

[edit:] OK, I just read about the audio problem. Did you give Volti a try? I have no use for Skype so I didn't test it.

@handy: Volti needs alot of work on the PKGBUILD. Having xfce-panel as optional launcher makes our openbox edition unique. It is usual. Sure you can always remove xfce4-mixer and change it against volti. Adding that to our Edition might need some further testing by Carl. He has to make this decision. We are open for suggestions so he might consider it.

Sounds awesome!

I just stumbled across this distribution and have fallen in love. I definitely see big things for Manjaro in the future.
