New LXDE Community Edition has been released!
« on: 20. February 2013, 15:16:59 »
Phil's announcement on our blog is as follows:

“Community Editions” of Manjaro Linux are released as bonus flavours in addition to those officially supported and maintained by the Manjaro Team, provided that the time and resources necessary are available to do so. The super-lightweight LXDE flavour has also been completely revised and re-built from the ground up to be the second new-and-improved community edition released this year.

Available for both 32 and 64-bit systems, this version provides access to even more new features yet to be seen in the upcoming official releases of Manjaro 0.8.4:

* New graphical boot screen
* New 0.8.4 visual style and desktop theme
* Kernel version 3.7 replaces 3.4 as the default (with improved flash support)
* Manjaro Exclusive: Pamac – a user user-friendly graphical interface to easily update the system and manage software – replaces Kalu, Package Browser, and the Pacman-GUI.

The latest LXDE flavour itself also provides a number of new features of its own:

* Lightweight office applications have been pre-installed (e.g. Abiword and Gnumeric)
* Full printing support is provided out of the box
* Vastly improved bootup speed

And again, several notable fixes and improvements have been undertaken:

* Default Home folders (Downloads, Pictures, etc.) are now automatically provided
* Removable media (e.g. USB sticks) can now be mounted
* Other partitions can be seen and accessed
* The trash function is fully operational

All in all, a good day for you LXDE fans!

Could someone enlighten me a bit?
Such "community flavors" are always provided and announced by core team. What are they so different from the official flavors?
Are they delivered "as is"?
Why doing it yourself when manjaro-system can do it for you?

Basically, the official flavours are guaranteed releases, and come first during development. Community editions are developed only if we have the time to do them, are not subject to release schedules, and are released if and when they are ready.

So guys you have time for release such flavours before releasing any 0.8.4-NET release candidate...  ;) (just kidding)

@tun in a cellar: The net-edition is simple one of our images without any DE on it. During releasing all those editions having a DE we automatically test also our net-edition. There is no need to upload it. If you want you can simple install manjaroiso-profiles and spin it yourself. Will only take under 30 Minutes to create it.

In short:

Code: [Select]
sudo pacman -S manjaroiso manjaroiso-profiles
mkdir -p ~/work/manjaroiso
cp -a /usr/share/manjaroiso/configs ~/work/manjaroiso
cd ~/work/manjaroiso/configs/net
sudo buildiso

@culami: using the official "stable" profiles and not the development branch we use as developers. If you brave enough you can do it still :P

I know this is based off the Rolling Release method, so would I lose the added benefits from installing this release over just simply updating a Manjaro-0.8.2-LXDE release?

Does the rolling release even apply to these type of updates. In other words would I get the new graphical boot logo by updating a Manjaro-0.8.2-LXDE release?

While you're constantly up-to-date with a rolling release, different packages are not installed. Therefore if you want everything to look like in 0.84 you will have to install the different packages (like pamac instead of kalu) or 0.84.

Hello from Russia, my friends! Thanks for the release! Fantastic! I am suspicious of Archlinux, but thanks Manjaro opinion changed. Switched to Manjaro and feel that I would stay in it forever. Thank you!

I have installed manjaro-lxde-0.8-r13-0218-i686.iso on my netbook via USB.

From installation everything went great and finished successfully.

When I restarted my netbook I get the green "OK" checklist then my screen goes blank right after. Is anybody else experiencing this headache?
