Best netbook edition dock?
« on: 24. September 2014, 06:38:24 »
Hi Rob, I first started with Majaro 8.5.0 and it had the plank dock shipped with it. this was probably what swayed to majaro in the first place. I really liked the artwork and dock in 8.5.0 and used it for ages. I didnt experience any issuses with the dock. though i have read on the forums that some hated it. I thought it was a step backwards when it was dropped.

I really miss the dock. the only distro I like for the netbook is enlightment, which maybe uses conky. but it is a little too minimalistic for me. I use my netbook for alot of productivity. and like a little more power. anyway 2 questions?

1 what do you think is the best dock for the netbook edition? Stability being most important consideration. Have you tested any docks in the netbook.
I have after much consideration decided it nessesary for me to have a dock..

2 Anyone know when .11 might be appearing?

regards
jaime

Enlightenment's own panel ("shelf" as it's called) can provide dock-style behaviour.
The gadget is called "iBar", you just add it to the shelf and then right-click it and goto Settings then configure it's behaviour.

We were just discussing release candidates for it.
Quite soon.

thanks Rob but I made mistake I meant elementary OS lol, Not enlightment  :-[ the other distros that ship with a dock I found were AV linux and LXLE. I think AV would be good if I were a bit more advanced and LXLE just wasnt able to sway me from Majaro. The dock in AV linux  was great looking. AV seems a great Distro but too advanced for me and not polished like Manjaro.
Should I ask in the Xfce support section who uses a dock and what works well?

Yeah i suppose... or just search the internet and repos and AUR for docks, and start trying em' out.

[Dock] Elementary OS

Elementary OS uses Plank as the dock

Also checkout Docky or Cairo.

Hi, I use plank and it works great for me. Also, there are some themes for plank.

Also, get the plank config from Archlinux AUR, it is worth it.

I installed Plank and it is working great, I should have looked at Cairo dock first just see how it runs; but I couldnt take not having a dock anymore.
Any themes for plank that are really good, where do you get them from?

Was it 0.8.5 or 0.8.6 that last shipped with Plank? Rob ever considered whether to ship netbook with a dock or not?

Anyone have anythoughts on Cairo Dock in Manjaro Xfce?

regards

There are some Plank Themes in yaourt.

yaourt plank-theme
Code: [Select]
yaourt -S plank-theme-numix
plank-themer-git
A small program that allows you to change Plank Dock themes without any additional consumption of resources
Code: [Select]
yaourt -S plank-themer-git

Plank works great but  cairo-dock + cairi-plugins, and gnome menus is the best it does use a bit more ram about 20mb but is full featured including menu and desktop applets + many customisable options  sub docks, notification area, + extra plugins if req from AUR.
I used it on my notebook with OB

It does ship with a dock.
DockBarX plugin is on the xfce4-panel by default.
