Title: ISO LXQt 0.8 64 bits & 32 CD-Size released (to test)
Post by: Esclapion on 15. October 2014, 18:49:46
Hi all  :)

Abstract

This ISO is based on the new LXQT 0.8, who must be considered as a RC, and on the current state of Manjaro 0.8.11, including the last update 11.

Main features

Screenshot with black theme

Download link (https://sourceforge.net/projects/manjarodev/files/users/esclapion/lxqt/0.8.11/2014.10)

If some people are interested, I can also produce a 32 bits version, probably CD-Size.  ;)

(edit)

ISO 32 bits uploaded to Sourceforge, same link. 667 MB.

In VBox, it takes less than 120 MB at start.  ;)

In this ISO, Chromium is replaced by Otter browser and the non-free drivers are not included.

Same look default than the 64 bits for few gtk applications : thus, gnome-keyring.

The 32bit can be useful if you want to play with it in Virtualbox when no hardware virtualization is present on the CPU ;) (said in another way, I need the 32bit version)

It is shinier and zippier.  Lots of small improvements, all add up.
You have put in a lot of effort and time into it. Thanks again.

It is indeed faster, I really start to like LxQt! :) Very good work, thanks a lot for the updated ISO and all your work!

It looks very nice and works very well.

How are you setting the Dark background colors in things like Octopi?

nvm - it requires "lxappearance", which requires gtk2; then you can install Vertex-theme

I'm jealous of you 64-bit guys. ;)

Yes, please, I'd really like a 32-bit version. :)

Nice review, thanks.   ;)

The basis theme can only be changed by lxappearance, in CLI.

Oh, a minor thing.
numlock while checked at sessions settings (Autostart) does not work.
But fixing it at ~/.config/autostart/NumLock to
Code: [Select]
Exec=/usr/bin/numlockx on will do.
Title: Re: ISO LXQt 0.8 64 bits released (to test)

Generally, the owners of laptop will have that off...  ::)

Understood, repeated often times. But what I am saying is that the default install may come with numlock off, But a check box at sessions settings (Autostart) should work for people wishing it, having a check box that doesn't work is not good, remove it if it does nothing. Just saying.

Still, nice job.

[edit] - ah ha, tried with
Code: [Select]
Exec=/usr/bin/numlockx on and check box at sessions settings (Autostart) off.
Booted with numlock off.
So suggest the default install with these variables and users wishing numlock can just tick numlock checkbox.

Thanks for your work.

The theme have some ugly dot lines around every element in the installer. See attachment.

I will complete the installation and report my findings later.

Yes, it will stop with gtk 3.14. But the installer is thus, and Gtk. Waiting also for calamares.

thank you esclapion for this release!
i have tested this version yesterday and today. here is my summary:

- nice theme and icon pack. this makes manjaro lxqt really stand out from other lxqt distributions (and manjaro versions). i have found one bug regarding the dark (default) gtk+ theme: right click on the desktop --> desktop preferences. in this window, you can set the text, background, and shadow color, but you cannot see which color is set. if a white (non-gtk+) theme is used, you can see the selected colors.
i do not know, whether this is a bug in the dark theme or a bug in lxqt.

- finally, i can see the lxqt-panel including the tray icons. this was impossible for me for months.

- the order and arrangement of settings and programs in the start menu is still not logical. this needs to be fixed by lxqt. i used menulibre from AUR to move and hide elements from the start menu. this worked.
unfortunately, menulibre uses the gtk+ theme and looks as ugly as thus. there are also a lot of icons missing and it can be a challenge to use menulibre.

- the manjaro icon in the start menu is only present for 2 out of 8 available lxqt themes. this could be improved in future versions of manjaro lxqt. for everybody, who wants to change the icon, look here: https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=THEMING#Change_Icon_of_Start_Menu_.2F_Mainmenu

- in general, a really nice lxqt version of manajro. there are still some bugs in lxqt (this is not esclapion's fault) that prevent me from using this as my main OS.

p.s.: esclapion, can you explain "magic keys" in a couple of sentences for non-french speakers?

Oh, sorry, I did not notice that the explanation was in French...  :-[

I changed the link.

To be simple, it's a combination of keys who are directly  interpreted by the kernel. So as long as the kernel is present and works, they work, even if everything else is down.

A linux can never be blocked if they are activated.

The "Magick key" is the key "Prt screen" on an english keyboard, "Impr écran" on a french, etc... It's on my keyboard the key at the right of F12. On a laptop, it can be necessary to use also Fn.

They are emergency commands, not intended for normal use.

Alt + Prt Screen + B -> reBoot of the system
Alt + Prt Screen + O -> powerOff the system

Recommanded use is :

Alt + Prt Screen + S -> Synchronize the file system
Alt + Prt screen + U -> try to remoUnt all file systems read-only
Alt + Prt Screen + B -> reBoot

I don't know if I'm understandable ?

I tested the 64 bits version on my desktop pc (Intel core 2 duo E6300 at 1.86 Ghz, graphics card Geforce 7300 GS). I chose the non free drivers and I think all worked fine, except that the resolution of my screen is slightly less than the one I have under Lubuntu (I also use the non free drivers there), no idea why.

Very beautiful and fast DE.
I would have to get used to the programs though, but that's really no big deal.
If I had to wipe out my Lubuntu, I would do it for Manjaro lxqt I think.

error: 'No carrier' First enable wifi with 'connmanctl enable wifi'

And running 'connmanctl enable wifi': wifi already on

Yes, it's beautiful now, and faster, but still there are many problems to solve.
 - No Android connection.
 - Time and date changing doesn't work. I need to change it because after installing,  it didn't select time zone and time correctly. In Live session it set my timezone and time correctly.
 - Wi-fi icon disappears.
 - I was unable to put .Xmodmap in autostart.

You must use cmst ? The icon is in the tray icon. On my PC, I get :

When exactly ? You must click on Minimize. If you click on Exit, it disappears, but come back after 1".

Ooh, a new flavour to taste.  ;D

I learned it as: Raising Skinny Elephants Is Utterly Boring
From Wikipedia - Magic SysRq key (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key)

It's actually REISUB. Always better to do term and kill before flushing the cache and files via sync. ;)
That would make it "Raising Elephants Is So Utterly Boring".
(I prefer the other mnemonic: "Reboot Even If System Utterly Broken") :P

Have Fun! ^-^

I works fine in Ubuntu and Manjaro XFCE.

It finally worked, enabling from terminal, then disabling from Fn key, and enabling again with Fn key. Strange, but it worked.

Do you have a source for that statement? Maybe we should made a poll about pulseaudio vs alsa.

I think pulseaudio must be included, as in all the other spins (XFCE, KDE, Gnome). It is more compatible and trouble free.

- if you install pulseaudio by default, it fulfills the manjaro philosophy: user-friendly linux at it's best.

- if you do not install pulseaudio by default, it is a light but less user-friendly system.

please consider the many users, which are not active on the forum or do not have a forum account, too.

i think the silent majority (all the manjaro users, who are not active in this forum) would appreciate pulseaudio.
it would make manjaro lxqt more user-friendly (but heavier on hardware resources), especially for users of multiple sound devices.

personally, i uninstall puleaudio on all of my systems, because i do not need it. my headset does not have a usb plug.

i think it could be a good thing to create a wiki page (e.g.: how to speed up manjaro lxqt) and describe how to uninstall pulseaudio, how to disable systemd startup services (e.g. modem manager, network connect, etc.) and other tips.

After some testing I think that networkmanager is more user friendly tan CMST. The gui from cmst is ver cryptic. I know it is GTK, but i think that the user should be over the purism of the system.

Also, today I installed the iso into another laptop, and it installed a barebone lxqt, without any setting, completly clean. Strange.

Network-manager is heavy and gtk2, so not for a leightweight Qt environment.

First I didn't like conman, but now I think it's ok. Linux has to offer more than "a popular os", but you have to spend some time to learn few things. It's good to know more things, to compare and choose. Conman isn't ideal but it's working fine, and it's enough user-friendly. So there's no need for gtk stuff. I talked about its little problem here, but that's not critical.

I'm glad to see that suspend works (finally! ) on lid close and I was able to change dpi settings. I wish I could have the android connection and a correct date & time settings. Oh I'm also surprised that octopi works faster now. Thanks Esclapion for your hard work. Your doing a great job!

For more userfriendliness there should be a gui for touchpad settings.

If the alias are well known, maybe not, but it's rarely the case. And it can be the beginning of an optimization tool.  ::)

So, made/show the alias to everyone, why optimization tool is for advanced users only (we don't play in Arch-hood here, or yes) ?

Merely versions have already alias, and never use/know them. And a comparizon with Arch has nothing to do with the current question.

You must add it. It work not just for Android phones (which have the greater market share) but for every device that use the MTP protocol (other phones, tablets, mediaplayers, some cameras, etc).

One of the main things that the users do with their machines is copy media, (music, photos, doucuments, etc) from their and to their portable devices (phones, tablets, mediaplayers, etc).

Please run the command like this:

"sudo journalctl -r"

Run this before and after connecting the phone.

i have just installed the 64bit version on an external hard drive and found a couple of bugs:

1. otter-browser is still set as default browser, although the 64bit version does not contain otter-browser anymore (instead chromium).

2. the privilege method is set to "su". "sudo" feels much more natural to me. i had to set the privilege method to "sudo" before i could use "sudo" in a terminal. the privilege method can be set within lxqt (start menu --> settings --> privileges ...).

3. i tried to set the "qterminal drop down" to my caps lock key. i use xmodmap to remap caps lock to F14 (i have done this in kde and xfce successful before and i could do it in lxqt). somehow, "qterminal drop down" does not save the F14 key as start/stop key. it always sets the default F12 key as start/stop key. this is strange.

4. i have updated to the latest sddm version 0.10. i created a config file for sddm:
Code: [Select]
sudo sddm --example-config > /etc/sddm.conf
i can edit the sddm.conf file and edit the code to:
Code: [Select]
User=ex
(ex is my username for lxqt)
despite that change, sddm does NOT autologin.

5. after changing a lot of settings (i do not remember which anymore), i was unable to boot using kernel 3.17.1. the system booted with kernel 3.14.22.

Thanks for the feedbacks.

1) OK, I will change it.

2) strange, sudo works for me. I will do some tries.

3) to see also, but it's a bit advanced  ;)

4) sddm in the latest releases is a problem. I don't trust it for the moment.  I tried it, but stayed on a preceeding version who works very well. So long it will not be solved, please don't use it.

5) same than for sddm. The 3.17 has a lot of known problems, I use a 3.14 LTS for stability reasons.  My next will probably be the 3.16, but only when it will reach at least 10 subversions.

4) and 5) are not really important, i just wanted to tell you.

other bugs:
6. i tried to boot my system (using kernel 3.14.22 and the open/free nauveau graphics driver) without sddm. i disabled sddm:
Code: [Select]
sudo systemctl disable sddm
and rebooted. i logged in in a tty and i tried to start lxqt. but these commands did not work (both gave me strange error messages):
Code: [Select]
startx
Code: [Select]
startlxqt
can you check those error messages?
one error message was about xorg...

7. i even tried this: https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=Auto-Login_without_a_Graphical_Desktop_Manager_%26_with_Systemd
but i received the same error messages as in 6.)

You are very far of the intended behaviour.  :D

For startx, as usual, you must first configure properly the .xinitrc (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Startx). Have you done it ?

i have figured out bug #6:

this is manjaro lxqt's default ~/.xinitrc file (i am not sure about the last line, i have messed quite a bit with this file in the last 24 hours):
Code: [Select]
#!/bin/sh

#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
#

export GTK2_RC_FILES="$HOME/.gtkrc-2.0"

DEFAULT_SESSION=startlxde-qt
case $1 in
   lxde-qt) exec  ck-launch-session dbus-launch startlxde-qt ;;
   *) exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch  $DEFAULT_SESSION ;;
esac

# fix pcmanfm
dbus-launch pcmanfm

exec startx

i tried to modify the last line to this:
Code: [Select]
exec startlxqt
but when i booted without sddm and logged-in in a tty, i received an error message when i typed
Code: [Select]
startx

so i deleted the entire .xinitrc file and tried the default .xinitrc (as recommended in the arch wiki):
Code: [Select]
#!/bin/sh

#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
#

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
  for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
  done
  unset f
fi

exec startlxqt
with this .xinitrc file, i was able to log-in without sddm and type "startx" without any error message. my lxqt started. i could use pcmanfm without any noticeable problem.

so, what is that code (i deleted) in .xinitrc for?
why did it cause an error message?
is the pcmanfm fix still necessary (if yes, i would run it in the background)?

edit: with this new .xinitrc bug #7 is solved, too. i just tried it and it works beautifully.

edit2: i uninstalled and reinstalled kernel 3.17.1. it seems to work again (because i reinstalled it or because i use the default .xinitrc file). just to let you know.

I only did tries with startx at the begin of lxqt. After a lot of tries of login manager, I choosed sddm.

A the same time, there was a hesitation in the team between sddm and lightdm but sddm has win.

So, it's old, the use of startx. If I remember well, I had a .xinitrc with only exec startlxqt or exec lxqt-session, nothing else.

startlxqt is a script, have a look on it ?

You can also try autologin using THIS (https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=Auto-Login_without_a_Graphical_Desktop_Manager_%26_with_Systemd).

You can alsi try autologin using THIS (https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=Auto-Login_without_a_Graphical_Desktop_Manager_%26_with_Systemd).
i have tried it, but it did not work.

however, it works when my .xinitrc file looks like this:
Code: [Select]
#!/bin/sh

#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
#

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
  for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
  done
  unset f
fi

exec startlxqt

you need the "exec startlxqt" at the bottom, otherwise "startx" and autologin does not work.
i prefer to use "exec startlxqt" instead of "exec lxqt-session", because the arch wiki says so: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lxqt#Manually

i will probably upate the wiki page later.
edit: i have edited and updated the wiki page: https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=Auto-Login_without_a_Graphical_Desktop_Manager_%26_with_Systemd
i have added an additional wiki page: https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=Proper_~/.xinitrc_File

i found more bugs:

8. this happens a lot in juffed (the text editor) but it sometimes happens on the panel, too (when i want to click on y minimized window icon).
with a probability of about 30% when i want to save a file and i move my mouse cursor to "file" --> "save file". when my mouse cursor crosses the "recent documents", it looses focus. i am unable to click "save file". i have to click "file" --> "save file" again before i can save my file/document.
when i want to enlarge/maximize a minimized window and i click the icon in the lxqt-panel, my mouse click does not get registered (or my mouse pointer looses focus). i have to move my mouse pointer a little bit and click the icon again. then, it works.

this is probably a bug in lxqt, but it would help to know, whether other people experience the same bug (then, i can file a bug report).

9. i have otter-browser installed. when i open/start otter-browser it always opens a webpage "http:/" (obviously, this is not a proper webpage). i tried to delete all config files of otter-browser in ~/.config/otter, but i still have this bug.
is this a bug of otter-browser or is it related to manjaro lxqt?
Title: Re: ISO LXQt 0.8 64 bits & 32 CD-Size released (to test)

8) juffed is not a part of lxqt, it's only a recommanded application. To see...

9) how do you run otter-browser. Try to run it from the command line or from the menu, I think it will work (a prob of xdg-open). If it works, do a shortcut directly to otter-browser (not to the default browser) in the taskbar.

about 8 ) : it does not happen only in juffed. it happens on the panel icons, too. it bothers me more when it happens on the panel, because i know i can use another text editor, but i cannot use another panel.

i found another bug:
10. when you open the hotkey settings, you can see every hotkey twice. it does not affect hotkeys and their functionality, but it looks strange.

You need to run them as sudo so we can see the kernel log. Maybe you should open a new thread to debug this issue? We are kidnapping the Esclapion thread.

I  ran  them as sudo, using root  terminal.

Now that I have a new Aspire 582p, I tried to see how it works with latest manjaro lxqt. Sadly there is no sound. And wifi connection works only with non-free drivers. I really want to install it as my main system, but I am afraid it will be unusable. Also touch support is really poor. I like its speed but I wish to see soon a reliable manjaro-lxqt.

For the sound, is manjaro-pulse installed ?

(edit)

And pavucontrol

Since when the Live CD requires pulseaudio and pavucontrol?

Reinstalled latest version... It's awesome!  ;D

Chromium preinstalled, dual monitor works fine now! Nice theme.
Great job!

Mouse speed isn't saved still in this version. But maybe it would work with a normal mouse, but I use a trackball...

Have to do some more testing 8)

Does it work with another spin, or is it just a problem with the hardware not being supported by the kernel ?

I also tried new xfce rc2 and it worked well. I had no problems with the sounnd or the wifi with free and non-free drivers.

Multiple crashes with PCManFM since today :(
No changes since yesterday. So maybe a bug? Used it with smb share before crashed first time.

Changed to qtfm to have a working file manager.
