Title: VLC not working
Post by: fredhoud on 29. April 2016, 04:00:07
As I was testing the Manjaro 16.06 pre2, I realized that the VLC tries  to open, but after a few seconds it stops. After this major update it started to work. Then Over this past weekend, I purchased a new HP desktop similar to my profile, as a backup system, and I decided to install the KDE 15.12, and do the updates, which I did. So my system is totally up-to-date now. How ever the VLC won't open, and I can't figure the reason. It tries to open, and after a few seconds it stops. I also need to mention that the VLC works on all of other computes without any problem. Any ideas?

have you tried simply reinstalling VLC?
Code: [Select]
sudo pacman -S vlc

That fixed it. Thank you very much.  :)

You running the official VLC package from Manjaro's repos?

If you're running an AUR package, you will often have to rebuild it when libraries it links to get updated.

Yes, running the official VLC package from Manjaro's repo.
I did not install anything from AUR.

I've just installed "plasma", dolphin, konsole, ark, kate.
Those are the only packages I've on my vbox installs and on my netbook.

What has lately been working for VLC is a simple uninstall/re-install. Failing that, remove the settings for it in /home/user/.config (hidden dir) after uninstalling, then re-install. A reboot helps, too.

Well, can't really just remove vlc...
phonon-qt5-vlc depends on vlc.. and phonon-qt5-backend.. etc etc..

damn -.-

And why not Read the Arch wiki Pacman Remove all packages  reinstall all packages, a bit like changing the clutch in a car you need to remove other things 1st then replace them after.

That's what I was doing, reading wikis.

Edit: works now, had to install qt4.
remove, clean config folder and reinstall did nothing.

Glad to hear that sometimes things get a bit complicated if it gives messages like .so blaa blaa exists in the system or will not load remove them they are causing the problem, then reinstall you may have to use the force option but never use it unless there is no option just looked over at arch this was a problem a while back but not lately.
Look at this thread there are plenty of links they may not be quite the same but gives you a Idea.https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=211247

;D
That did inspire a suggestion in my mind to make a thread that describes ... the 'perfect developer' and the 'perfect' user (assuming they begin as a fresh novice and took a methodical and efficient path to understanding)
But i realised, they dont really exist ... everyone has their own way of comprehension that works for them (or sometime works 'against' them  :o ... but its all catharsis) ... the data and reflections are out there ... a willingness to engage them is all thats required, and we muddle through ... i think we do okay :)

This isn't the same issue that crops up from time-to-time for which simply reinstalling (pacman -S vlc) works magic?
