Title: [Update] 2016-04-26 - Cinnamon 3.0, Pamac, Gnome 3.20, KDE, Virtualbox
Post by: philm on 26. April 2016, 20:05:48
We are happy to announce our seventeenth update of Manjaro 15.12 (Capella)!

With this we updated Gnome and GTK to 3.20. This will break most of the themes, which will be fixed if and when their developers decide to update them. Some GTK 3.20-compliant themes are ready now - see further down this post.

It is recommended to use Adwaita or any theme which is already compatible with the new CSS style of Gnome. Most of the work is now going into our new default theme, Vertex-Maia.

So what changed so far:

 - some of our kernels got a new point-release
 - updated JDK8, Virtualbox and profile settings of our Manjaro editions
 - plasma framework is now at 5.21
 - plasma desktop is now at 5.6.3
 - KDE apps at 16.04
 - haskell and python updates
 - a lot of rebuilds due the gtk3 update
 - libreoffice is now at 5.1.2
 - firefox, thunderbird and calligra got updated
 - continues work on vulkan support
 - some updates to lib32 repository

Guillaume and Dustin worked together to get Gnome headerbar working with pamac. This gives pamac a new look and feel. Also additional improvements got added to our latest preview version of pamac. Install it via pamac-dev.

Archlinux upstream fixes are now from: Tue Apr 26 19:46:47 CEST 2016.

It is always good to check for updated packages, even we don't notify you about them. As usual people using our testing branch will help us to get snaps over to our stable branch almost smoothly. For notifications on daily bases please take a look at our mailing list:

https://lists.manjaro.org/pipermail/manjaro-packages/

Kind regards,
Philip Müller and the Manjaro Development Team

The new default Manjaro GTK theme, which is GTK 3.20 compatible, is Vertex-Maia

You can install it with:
Code: [Select]
sudo pacman -Sy vertex-maia-themes vertex-maia-icon-theme xcursor-maia
Then select it in your environment's appearance/theme settings area.

Troubleshoots

ufw

If you have issues with ufw not working anymore, you have to copy your custom rules to a different folder. Do it like this:

Code: [Select]
sudo cp -v /usr/lib/ufw/user.rules.pacsave /etc/ufw/user.rules
sudo cp -v /usr/lib/ufw/user6.rules.pacsave /etc/ufw/user6.rules

steam

Steam might not work due incompatiblity of libgpg. You my try followed command to "fix" it:

Code: [Select]
find ~/.steam/root/ -name "libgpg-error.so*" -print -delete

@Mozon: pamac uses gtk3. Your theme doesn't support version 3.20. Please use another one which supports it.

Hi,

I'm unable to update. I got the updates notification on pamac and after hitting apply, I got some archlinux key error, so I canceled the updates and ran -

Code: [Select]
sudo pacman -Syy
sudo pacman -S manjaro-keyring archlinux-keyring
sudo pacman -Suu
sudo pacman -Syyu

but the updates had vanished and I got the "there is nothing to do message", so I ran pacman-mirrors -g but still no updates. Can anyone help me with this?

There are no logs of the error in pamac or pacman log, and I don't know where else I could look if you need to see what the error was exactly.

Thanks with this!

On Manjaro Gnome here. Every single update has disabled Steam. But this time, the "purge libraries" button didn't work. How can I get it to open? It's the same libGL errors as last time:

The GTK3 update (to 3.20) broke the default Numix-Manjaro XFCE theme for me, similar I assume to what others are reporting. Pcmanfm was a real mess. Downgrading GTK3 to 3.18.9-1 (which is what I had before the upgrade) and rebooting fixed the theme and the many affected applications displayed properly again.

The only problem I noticed with the GTK3 downgrade is that all the pamac package managing applications would immediately crash (with a libvte error). So I downgraded the vte3 and vte-common packages to version 0.42.5-1 (which is what they were before the upgrade) and that seemed to solve the problem. Pamac updater and package manager start fine now.

Edit: gtkmm3 also had to be downgraded for pavucontrol.

I'll wait to upgrade GTK3 until I see the new theme packages ready for upgrade as well.

Updated here.

Some may have feel creep out about the theme change, but this can be solve easily.
Open term and type:
sudo pacman -Sy vertex-maia-themes vertex-maia-icon-theme xcursor-maia

Go to settings->apearence
and select vertex-maia
Go to LightDM GTK+ Configurations
and select vertex-maia

Ok, now you can chill out.

I couldn't update at first because I jacked up my login manager i didn't have enough to really sit and troubleshoot, so i reinstalled Manjaro and when I tried to update it got the end of downloading 342 updates and said transaction failed so i reset mirrors and keyrings and such and I was finally to do 412 updates. So far so good. ;D

Hi

Got through the default theme issues, but seem to now have a problem with default optimus.
(Laptop with optimus, 4.4x kernel, xfce, all latest updates).

Prior to this update, after the initial startup, the nvidia notification LED would turn itself off, and I would be running on the Intel integrated graphics. That's what I'd like to do.

Now, the notification LED is always on, which indicates that the nvidia card is always on and never powered off. It still seems to be accessing the integrated graphics by default, as I can only access nvidia-settings if I run primusrun nvidia-settings -c :8, as I used to prior to the update.

After searching around, found this post (http://ubuntuguide.net/turn-off-discrete-nvidia-optimus-graphics-card-ubuntu). Seems like the nvidia driver is not being unloaded. If I follow the modprobe -r nvidia and then the tee command, I can manually turn the discrete card off.

Same happens with 4.1x kernel.  Here (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/bumblebee#Default_power_state_of_NVIDIA_card_using_bbswitch) says that bumblebeed should turn the nvidia card off. So seems to be something funky with bbswitch/bumblebeed/driver interaction.

Over 450 packages on my KDE-Plasma install, and other than answering a few dependency issues at the beginning of the update it went smooth as silk! My complements to all involved.

After spending 12 years as a Gentoo user, and the last three months trying out different Distros, I finally have found a home here with Manjaro. Excellent effort!

I'm using the Greenbird theme on Xfce, so it will be interesting to see if it holds up after this update.

Since it seems like a big update (343 packages totaling 1.3GB for me), I will update tomorrow after making a Clonezilla backup of my system first. Just to play it safe.

Updated with trepidation as I did not want to change my themes.  So far no problems.  Using a combination of Menda-Dark (colors), Numix Reborn (window decorations), and Menda-Circle icons.  Are there any actual differences between the Menda-Circle and the Maia icon sets?

It is recommended to use Adwaita or any theme which is already compatible with the new CSS style of Gnome. Most of the work is now going into Adwaita-Manjaro and Vertex-Manjaro. Vertex will become our default theme for most of our editions.

Where can we change to the Adwaita or Vertex themes?

When I got to Settings>Window Manager, then neither Adwaita or Vertex is in the list, so it can't be selected there.

I've been using Manjaro for a year now, so maybe those themes did not get added along with the updates? If not, then how to obtain them?

Thanks, I installed them just in case the Greendbird theme that I use breaks tomorrow after the update. But one user already commented that it seems to work fine for him, so I don't expect any issues. But it can never hurt to have some solid backup themes for this transitional period to GTK3.

This was a HUGE update. Had GNOME 3.20, Cinnamon 3, and a number of KDE elements as well. approx. 1.2 GB and almost 400 packages.
Went well tho, and will be posting a bit more, but smooth.

EDIT
I did have to change over to the vertex family of themes though. But not complaining as the vertex themes now look better than they ever have. So nice, very nice.

Damned good job devs! Most definitely keep up the good work.

Took 1.5hrs on my lowly 1-3mb/sec wifi connection.

Smooth upgrade except for the multi-monitor issue.
For some reason occasionally on my Netrunner Rolling my dual 22" boot up to desktop in mirror mode.
With left monitor stacked on top of right monitor. Have to manual setup monitors again.
Wish I knew the issue as using open default drivers on Ati 4350 legacy card driving two 22" displays.

Otherwise great update and Much Thanks Manjaro Team! :)

Update: Yep sound works for Youtube,Music program etc.. But not for System Notifications except defaults already set.
Default points to sound example Network Connection deactivated works if you keep whatever default sounds.
Example device disconnected.ogg. But if you want to change sounds and end up with a path even a valid one. Will Not play

Like /usr/share/sounds/disconnect.ogg then it will not work till you erase the path and only have disconnect.ogg in the play sound path window.
Cannot change sounds as soon as you select sound then it will insert path string /usr/sounds/disconnect.ogg and that will Not work.
Goes for path to any other including ones in my home directory no longer work. If i enter just the sound file. As doesn't know where to look?
As not in default folder.

See Netrunner thread for example images.

I migrate to  Vertex-Maia but Thunderbird and Firefox are not well integrated.
I got this in terminal:
Code: [Select]
vertex-maia-themes:

-> please copy the 'chrome' folder of the desired theme to your browser profile
  -> or create a symlink.
==> For example:
  -> 'ln -s /usr/share/themes/Palemoon/Vertex-Maia-Dark/chrome/ ~/.moonchild\ productions/pale\ moon/<xyz123>.default/chrome'

but i don't get how to do it.

Updated fine on XFCE and KDE (my stable partitions), and am able to boot into KDE using the 4.4.8 kernel -- but I get a black screen (with vague, dark flashing) on XFCE using both the 4.4.8 and 4.5.2 kernels -- and I'm unable to boot.  The 4.1.23 kernel boots without issue.  I haven't tried 4.6 yet.

I am updating on a VB VM, running Manjaro with OpenRC.  After update, on reboot the boot process hangs just before lightdm, so I have a black screen and a flashing underscore cursor...it is taking no kb input, and the only action I can take is to close the vm, or issue a ctrl-alt-del through the VB interface....

UPDATE: alt-f1 produces a tty, so I can log in.  rc-status says xdm has crashed -- do we have a fix for this?

Thunderbird looks good here. Just you might need to restart the application after you change the theme.
For Firefox:
You'll have to find out the name of your profile: In your ~/.mozilla/firefox directory there is a folder with a name consisting of some random letters and numbers. I'll call it xyz.default now, you will use your respective name
Then do in the terminal
Code: [Select]
ln -s /usr/share/themes/Firefox/Vertex-Maia/chrome ~/.mozilla/firefox/xyz.default/chrome
Just replace 'xyz' with the real name of your folder.
Then restart Firefox and it should match Vertex-Maia theming :)

I am running Manjaro as a Virtualbox guest. I installed the update, which gave no error, however, at reboot, I get to a black screen (with a white blinking cursor) when and where the graphical interface is supposed to start. I am running kernel 4.4, but I also try to load kernel 4.1 that I kept as a fallback. This seems to be the same issue that was reported for kernel 4.5 and might be related to the virtualbox guest additions. However, now I am stuck with a system that cannot boot at all...

Hello, after the update my system is now broken and I'm unable to login. The update appeared to apply fine under my regular XFCE install (not a virtual machine) with no errors, but after reboot, I now boot to a blank/black screen instead of a login screen (sometimes with a blinking cursor, sometimes with nothing at all.) Thankfully, I am able to escape the blank screen with Ctrl-Alt-F2, but nothing I've tried will let me back to the login/graphical interface.

I have Linux kernels: 318, 41 and 44 installed. None of which will allow me to boot into my system any more, they all result in the same blank screen/lockup.

This is the first time that I've ever had a stable Manjaro update completely break my system and I really hope that someone is able to figure this out soon. Please let me know if you need any more specific information. Thanks

Hi,

Recently installed the Cinnamon Community Edition and after this update whenever I go to shutdown I get a thing popping up that says that 'Secret Storage Service' is still running but is not responding.

Thanks,

Edit: Figured out it had to do with the Gnome-keyring and or potentially with the libgnome companion app. Reinstalled and now I don't get the message. Yay for self troubleshooting! :P

Edit#2: Nevermind, same thing came back. But does I think seem to be related. I imagine this will be fixed sometime with a new update from the Cinnamon dev team or something. Maybe it's a Gnome issue.

Update broke the display manager on an old laptop with Nvidia GPU (8xxx series). Tried both SDDM and LightDM, with no results.
Might be a driver issue...

Libreoffice looks really weird after GTK 3.20 and vertex. Can't see the menus and icons on the toolbar. Greenbird theme fixes it.

Please post a screenshot and tell us which version of libreoffice you're using. I'm using the still version and it is fine here on XFCE.

While my system has never broken after a set of updates, what you describe is exactly the reason why I make a backup of my system every time before updating.

Perhaps it will be possible for you to boot into Manjaro's live cd and then chroot into your broken installation and roll back the updates using the command-line. Then wait until the next round of updates before trying to update your system again.

This really pisses me off aswell, you will have to do it everytime that steam package gets updated (it comes with some fucked up drivers). I have done it many times as well. I am thinking to blacklist steam itself and let it update on its own.

Almost all fine, for this great upgrade.

Two problems.

The first is about the 8192cu-dkms driver: upgrading to the new linux4.5.2-1 kernel version the 8192cu driver don't work. Downgraded to the previous kernel and all is right.

I got also this message:

Code: (html5) [Select]

/tmp/alpm_VdS5lu/.INSTALL: line 8: systemctl: command not found
error: command failed to execute correctly

I'm with OpenRC and not with systemd. By now I simply ignore this message :)

No problems here, the update is perfect.

For all those are using the xfce-theme-greybird like me, don't worry, it's perfectly working with the new gtk update.  ;)

I had an issue that is not not related with this update: at reboot I've found a black screen, no X running. I thought that was because I installed "compiz reload" a few weeks ago, but this was not the problem: it was fontconfig package, that gave me some problem one month ago with conky, so I downgraded it to version 2.11.1-1, stopped the updates of the package and used it untill today.
So I tried to update fontconfig to the current version (2.11.95-1) and everything is perfectly working now.
My only problem is that I still have that fonts issue with conky.

So for so, well, OK, on one machine. I hate that GTK3 breaks themes . . . constantly . . .

@Escalpion: Apparently you are using the light themes. My Mediterranean dark broke.

@drixsi: Try a different icon theme. My LO 5.1.2 is OK with Faenza green.

For those who have DeLorean 3.16, both regular and dark themes seem OK at first blush, but I have not tested thoroughly.

Edit: No, DeLorean is broken as well (pamac header). However, at least its dark theme is still dark unlike most others! Vertex-Maia is nice, but the teal is not the best choice. It looks horrible with the green that appears in some windows (e.g., check boxes in pamac) or headers. Similarly, while the teal looks good in and of itself, as a color not found in nature, it presents a bit of a jolting contrast for those of us who use wallpapers with nature scenes.

Ktorrent settings were all reset due to config location change. The fix worked, kinda. My ongoing-magnets were removed :S. Now it turns out syndication plugin is gone as well? How disappointing...

Steam problem and fix confirmed. I think. Can't connect to Steam network atm...

No problem with bumblebee. Any plans for NVIDIA 364.* with Vulkan?

Seems ManjaroFlatDark lxappearance theme is borked as well. Any chance it will be updated some time? I don't even know which package it belongs to lol. Vertex-maia-dark seems cool enough for now.

Menda was so much better than Vertex-Maia, I really like the warmer green tone it was using much more than the cold green used by Vertex-Maia. (If anybody is wondering, I also prefer the old Faenza-Green icon theme over the Menda icon theme  ;D).

But this is all a matter of taste, so on a more serious note: I think, in terms of user friendliness it would be great to notify those users not reading this forum topic about the fact that the previous standard GTK theme is being dropped. Otherwise, many will find their preferred GTK3 apps (most prominently, Firefox) unusable after the upgrade and won't even know what the hell is going on.

Did you follow the directions on the update where it says to use mhwd to set your graphics card? Be sure to check notes every time you update.

You can reboot, press 'e' to edit the boot line in GRUB and add a 3 to the end of the line, to get to a command line and use mhwd to set your drivers. Reboot and you should be OK.

Just a later addition to those who may come to this area:
YES, themes will be broken UNTIL they are brought into GTK+3 compliance, and YES definitely change the LightDM theme to one that IS support (Vertes is a good choice).

Steam works, VM works, MDM XFCE works - no noticeable problems with the themes but I changed to vertex anyway - because it looks good.

I'll see what I can do, but my desktop theme and Firefox theme are no longer working right.  Arc-Dark.  Also, since two updates ago, system applications still fail to launch from the menu.  I have to launch them from terminal.

It would be a good idea for developers to post why things are breaking a lot lately.  Every update previous to the last three went smoothly for me.  I might have had problems with packages not updating, but they were easily and quickly solved.  These latest updates, however, have been annoying as hell.

 >:(

Update:  Managed to fix my theme.  But I would still like to know what to do so that I can begin to launch system applications from the menu again.

Anyway, my frustration was not aimed at anybody.  It was just me venting in public -- classy as it was.

I'm having a similar problem with XFCE that others have mentioned in this thread. After booting i get a black screen with a grey bar on the bottom that occasionally flickers. Things I've tried:

installing themes: sudo pacman -S vertex-maia-themes vertex-maia-icon-theme xcursor-maia

reinstalling graphics drivers using mhwd

using kernel 4.1.23-1 instead of 4.4.8-1

downgrading gtk3 3.20 to 3.18 and lib32-gtk 3.20 to 3.18

So far nothing has worked. Anyone have any ideas?

back home after 3 weeks, switched the desktop on (with Manjaro Openbox) and started the update... well, it hasn't been a good idea :(
Hadn't checked everything but at the first sight I've noticed:
- Plank doesn't automatically start any more, I've checked the OpenBox Autostart file and Plank is still there, but it seems not to work, while e.g Conky seems to have no problems, why?

- Firefox... the Bookmarks Toolbar looks "condensed"... and when clicking on the folders the menu shows only the tiny icons of the websites (or folders) but the names of the sites (or folders) have disappeared, also I've noticed that when I right click on a link it's the same... the menu doesn't have any text, only tiny (horrible) icons here and there. Why? How can I fix it? Also, if I double click... or try in any way to select the text in the address bar it doesn't work...

I'm leaving again on Friday, not much time to dedicate to solving this issue... hopefully there's a quick and easy-to-do fix...

We are happy to announce our seventeenth update of Manjaro 15.12 (Capella)!

With this we updated Gnome and GTK to 3.20. This will break most of the themes and will be fixed as soon as we had time to port them.

It is recommended to use Adwaita or any theme which is already compatible with the new CSS style of Gnome. Most of the work is now going into Adwaita-Manjaro and Vertex-Maja. Vertex will become our default theme for most of our editions.

...

I hope the Raleigh theme for XFCE is ported soon. Both the Adwaita-Manjaro and Vertex-Maia themes are hard on my eyes. I went with the Raleigh theme because it was no-nonsense visually.

By the way, how when I know when Raleigh is ported? It doesn't show up in the package manager. Will it just come as an update to XFCE?

I'll also add that the Raleigh theme is the only theme that actually *works*. All other themes have bizarre problems and incompletenesses that one runs into eventually. So for example, the Network Monitor for the xfce4-panel has an option to choose incoming and outgoing colors in its bar display. But Adwaita-Manjaro makes both these bars the same blue colors regardless of one's Network Monitor settings.

That is another reason why I was using the Raleigh theme, because I want a theme that actually works.

Raleigh doesn't "work", it's the opposite in fact, it doesn't work for GTK3 at all - Raleigh is only a GTK2 theme.

It 'works' because when there's no GTK3 theme at all, GTK3 uses it's default theme: Adwaita.

So when you use Raleigh you're getting Raleigh for GTK2 apps and Adwaita for GTK3 apps.
Same will happen if you use and GTK2-only theme.

EDIT: Actually that's wrong anyway, just tested, and using Raleigh results in all GTK3 apps looking quite bad.

If people want a light theme that's guaranteed to always be GTK3 ready at the time of update, use Gnome's provided, default theme: Adwaita (not Adwaita-Manjaro, just plain old upstream Adwaita)

ufw

If you have issues with ufw not working anymore, you have to copy your custom rules to a different folder. Do it like this:

Code: [Select]
sudo cp -v /usr/lib/ufw/user.rules.pacsave /etc/ufw/user.rules
sudo cp -v /usr/lib/ufw/user6.rules.pacsave /etc/ufw/user6.rules

One would do this if unable to start ufw?

Hi, Rob. Yes, I've read about these themes.

All I am speaking to is what I can actually see when I use the Raleigh theme (i.e., before this last update broke it). I see that it doesn't have the problems of all the other many themes that I have tried.

Good update and not a single problem here. I installed the Vertex-Maia theme before the update, and I like it even better than Menda. Also, with the new theme a few problems have vanished. So for example, my firefox toolbar now looks much more organized, as it used to. The huge space around the icons is gone.

All in all, great job done, and thank you very much devs! :D

@Photon: Thanks. If Menda were to slip gently into the night, it might be nice to create some variations on Vertex which has some great windows decorations, but an alternative to the teal would be good and a charcoal/slate version I am sure would be a welcome addition.

For Mediterranean themes users, a bug has been filed on GitHub, but it looks as if help would be appreciated from those with theming experience. See:

If we do NOT want to update to GTK3 3.20 until theme authors/maintainers have had a chance to (once again!) change their themes, is it possible just to block updates to the GTK3 package for the time being . . . or are there more packages affected (e.g., gtk3mm) . . . and/or is this too big a can of worms to open?
You can just try that for a while and see what happens. I don't expect it to render your system un-bootable, so the day you encounter problems you can just finally upgrade. But personally of your three options I would expect the last one quite soon ... :P ;)

Hm. In all contexts I have tried sofar with different trays that's not the case. Could you provide a screenshot and tell me what tray exactly you are using? Is that in E20?

Yes, I encountered this specifically with Vertex-Dark running under E20 using stalonetray for notifications. I am not on my updated machine (and not inclined to deal with a can of worms on this one at the moment), but as I recall there is some virtually imperceptible change in the letters, but no visible bar.

Unfortunately, Vertex under E operates at a disadvantage. The nicest parts of Vertex are the top border decoration and buttons, but they are not recognized by E -- nor does the pamac header come out as compactly/elegantly as shown in the screenshot I have seen. This latter is, I assume, an E-related Vertex issue, while the menu issue seems pamac-specific.

Screenshots to come this evening.

(PS: RIP Menda)

same issue here, but i'm running jwm community edition in the virtualbox.  i see several people reported same issue. i've tried everyhting suggested before (reinstalling drivers using mhwd, etc.) and nothing helped. i guess this update does break virtualbox drivers, as my another installation of manjaro i3 on the desktop with nvidia drivers upgraded with no problems...

Just registered to say this. Gtk is a piece of ****. My beloved greybird theme is broken (as my working process) for gtk 3 apps. And only three compatible themes (vertex, adwaita and arc) look ugly and too white imho. Can someone provide a link to  the previous gtk package? I cleared cache before update.
P. S. Ok. Vertex looks not so bad. The only issue I have with pa applet icon which has a dark color on a dark panel.

Hello,

Thank you devs for another almost smooth upgrade. My Greybird theme got broken, replaced by Adwaita; ufw lost my configs, applied the advised fix; all is well now.

I love Linux and Manjaro, in that order; the theme is just a detail.

Again, many thanks.

Huge, but smooth update on the KDE side on all machines. Also the Dropbox icon is appearing again on computers with Intel, and ATI graphics. Before the update the Dropbox icon only appeared on NVIDIA graphics.
Thanks,

Again regarding Firefox and themes...
Using now Vertex-Maia works nice but what about the Dark version??

I've read everything in this thread and I found some advice on the web and also on Manjaro forums about the use of Firefox and dark themes.
In the Menda days, I've given up using the dark theme because it broke Firefox. Even with different custom chrome folders I've found around, my Firefox still displayed white text against white background (on startpage.com search results for example). The problem persists....

Should I (we?) really give up trying Firefox + dark themes??? Since you folks are updating the themes and icons, would it not be timing to solve this issue properly?? Jeez, over two years and still all Manjaro dark themes make Firefox strange (startpage.com search results, Manjaro forums and many others are examples of often visited sites that are broken...)

Other than this, the update went good :-)

Yes this GTK theme broking business is nonsense. E.g. all 'working' dark themes make gitg diff view unreadable due to too foreground color being too light. I tried using custom foreground colors but gitg is oblivious to those settings. Even gitg-git does not fix it.

ManjaroFlatDark did not have this problem.

Maybe I don't understand what you mean because this is not the issue to me. Older dark themes were also broken.
I just think Manjaro team should manage to fix them, since themes are being redone anyway. Why not give this some attention?? :-(

Firefox and dark themes haven't work ever and that's not Manjaro's fould. There's couple of fix on addons of that, but some sites still not working right., textbox text is too light etc. I'm hoping new Firefox GTK support fix this eventually. :)

I just installed the update and it seemed to have messed up the Greenbird theme. Switching to Vertex didn't help. Things were acting quirky, like for example the "show desktop" button no longer worked and when logging into Manjaro the GUI had no outlines.

So I'm currently restoring my system to the state before the update from a Clonezilla backup image that I made earlier today before the update.

I'm waiting this one out and will wait until the next update cycle where hopefully a number of issues will be fixed.

It was quite obvious that the GTK update is what was affecting things in a negative way. (I'm on Manjaro 64-bit Xfce)

Hopefully Greenbird will be made to work well with the new version of GTK as well.

ManjaroFlatDark did not have this problem.

I was aware about all the GTK2,GTK3,QT theming nightmare before but was content to avoid it because things just worked™. Now that I got annoyed with it, after some research I realized that GTK now bundles both light and dark themes together and uses a 'gtk-application-prefer-dark-theme' switch which was not obvious to me using LXDE /sigh

Anyway, since Vertex-Maia and Vertex-Maia-Dark are bundled separately the latter masquerades as a light theme which is a good thing™ because it would not be compatible with GTK2 and QT otherwise. Problem is GTK3 apps like gitg may use that switch to determine which hard-coded colors to use and you end up with unreadable text because the 'light theme variant' is actually dark.

DL;DR add 'gtk-application-prefer-dark-theme=1' to ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini if using a dark-only theme.

P. S. I hate GTK devs.

Okay I rolled back my system to a state before the update using a Clonezilla backup image. All is working perfectly again.

Since I still would like to update my system, but suspect that GTK has been causing the issues, which packages should I avoid to update in order to circumvent these issues? Every package of which the name starts with gtk? Or are there more packages that should be avoided to update for now?

PS: For those that haven't made backups of their system, I can understand that an update cycle like this might be scary for new Manjaro users. Which is why I always recommend to make backups of your system before updating. For me, this was crucial today, because I use my Manjaro system as a workstation.

Also an important note for the developers.

Due to the issues with this update, I would like to selectively select packages to update in the update manager. However there are 344 packages to update and they are all selected. There is no "select none/select all" checkbox, which means I have to uncheck all 344 packages manually and check the ones I would like to update or I would need to use the command line.

Such a checkbox would be a very useful feature in a scenario like this.

I hereby request the developers to implement this.

I'm going to update my system, all 344 packages, except the following packages related to GTK,
because I want to see if I can update my system without issues if I do it like this.
This will allow me to wait for an update cycle that fixes all the issues.

The packages that I will not update are:

gtk-update-icon-cache
gtk3
gtkmm3
gtksourceview3
lib32-gtk3

If I'm missing any packages that should be excluded from being updated, then please let me know.

I personally love the Adwaita-manjaro theme and dislike the Vertex one. However, at first it looked okay, but now it looks like it's conflicting with the original Adwaita and the text for icons on the desktop is suddenly dark grey, instead of white. Also, when I switch back to original Adwaita, it looses the desktop background and goes white. After logging out-in, the background is back and everything is okay.

Pix showing the issue for Adwaita-Manjaro theme:

As mentioned, it didn't look like this in the beginning. It just suddenly "happened". No idea, why. Any ideas how to fix it? :)

Any recommendations for a flat dark theme compatible with gtk 3.20?  Menda-dark was great for this.  Maia-vertex is fine but I don't like the shadows on the panel and the window decoration buttons.  I can use any of my old favorite themes for window decorations, so that's not as big a deal.

Okay that did not go too well. The Greenbird theme still got messed up, even after excluding the GTK packages.

When trying to run Pamac after that update, it only briefly turned on and then closed itself again. So I did a full system update again using the terminal and included the GTK packages this time. Then I switched the theme to Vertex-Maia in the Appearance settings, Window manager settings and Greeter Settings.

Now things seem to work relatively well, except for the fact that I can't select Vertex-Maia-Dark in the greeter settings.

I hope Greenbird will get updated to work well with this new GTK version.

I just downgraded gtk3 and gtkmm3 to restore the themes broken by the upgrade. Greenbird works okay for me now; you need to reboot after changing your GTK3 package to see the change. You'll also need to downgrade (or not upgrade) vte3 and vte-common to avoid breaking pamac package management applications. I'm running 32-bit. Your lib32 package is probably for running 32-bit applications on 64-bit, so that may need downgrading also.

As I posted earlier in this thread, there's a how-to for downgrading GTK3 here: https://forum.manjaro.org/index.php?topic=33482 (https://forum.manjaro.org/index.php?topic=33482)

For now I've switched to Vertex-Maia in the Appearance settings and Window Manager settings and to Vertex-Maia-Dark in the Greeter Settings. That combination seems to be satisfactory to me until Greenbird gets updated for the new GTK version, because let's be honest, even if we don't update GTK right now, then at one point we'll have to do it anyway. It would be hard to get around it at some point.

I seem to have the same problem since this update. Running Linux 4.4.8-1-MANJARO, bumblebee 3.2.1-13, linux44-nvidia 1:361.42-3 and linux44-bbswitch 0.8-9. I don't have a dedicated LED though, I'm checking the Nvidia card's state using:

Thanks

Did you follow the directions on the update where it says to use mhwd to set your graphics card? Be sure to check notes every time you update.

You can reboot, press 'e' to edit the boot line in GRUB and add a 3 to the end of the line, to get to a command line and use mhwd to set your drivers. Reboot and you should be OK.

i have the same issu.
where a add the 3?

For those having issues accessing their desktop environment after the update (when booting). Try booting with the Manjaro live CD. Install mhwd-chroot and roll back any video-driver update and uninstall Compiz. Also try switching video-drivers or re-installing them.

@Oberon: Color me very red regarding the highlight bar on the pamac dropdown menu.  :-[ :-[ :-[  I know I restarted E each time after changing the theme, but apparently a complete system reinit was needed. When I booted in this evening, everything was functioning correctly.

@fassil: Thanks for the thought even if MedNight was not the solution.

@khalismur -- and other dark theme lovers. One reason I loved the MediterraneanDark and MediterraneanTribute themes is that they did not use pure white for the letters but a very faint grey. As a result, even when integration was not perfect, the letters would still be *just* visible -- enough for login and other purposes. For E users, the MediterraneanDark theme was also a very close match to the defunct e17gtk theme.

I have now integrated the chrome folder for Vertex-Dark in Firefox on my machine and all is smooth sailing. Works super with FF!

(BTW, Vertex is not the only dark theme to provide FF chrome folders, so if you prefer something else *and* it gets fixed, look for a readme and/or chrome folder in with the other theme file. Vertex is the first I have seen to put that folder in a FF subfolder of themes, perhaps as a new gtk3 standard?)

@philm: I neglected to say so earlier, but thank you for updating python-efl. All E users with econnman should now have it working again!

You can make a bootable usb-stick with the Manjaro Live installation on it.

You can use UNetbootin to create such a usb stick in Linux or if you use Windows, then you can use Rufus.

While this update seems to have caused issues for over a third of users according to the poll, I understand that switching to GTK had to happen at some point. Perhaps it's better that these issues occur now rather than later, before the major release of 16.6.

While my system has never broken due to a Manjaro update cycle, there was one update cycle last year that made it behave a bit quirky, however on the next update cycle afterwards, things were smoothed out again and worked perfectly again.

I suspect this time will be similar, however perhaps it might take a few update cycles before everything is perfect again, because quite a few packages and themes have to adapt to the new GTK.

vertex-maia-dark text is unreadable in my Bank of America login window when I type my login. The window just turns black, login functions just fine, but this is changed behaviour from before.  The text is ether black or invisible. If you select the text entered it appears as a strange blue text. Not a big issue as the login works and is in fact more secure... but is this intended behaviour? I'm not bitching, just thought it should be noted.

Here is the link if any one with vertex-maia-dark  wants to test it: https://www.bankofamerica.com/ (https://www.bankofamerica.com/) My login is ... you must be kidding ::)

Thanks again Development team, Manjaro dominates.

Oberon Thanks for a reply, I did try a symlink. I entered:
Code: [Select]
]$ ln -s /usr/share/themes/Firefox/Vertex-Maia-Dark/chrome ~/.mozilla/firefox/xyz.default/chrome
I have replaced the random string in .default above with xyz. rebooted, here is the screen shot. I tried to take a screen shot with the login text selected, for completeness but the image reverts and hides the entered text.
To me this is not a big deal but if I can give more info I am glad to help. :)

and i use the free drivers this is the output of [mhwd -li]

after this update my laptop was running 59-63 C when i'm doing nothing and up to 67 when i'm just browsing.
turns out both IGD and DIS were powered on
output of cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch

1:DIS: :Pwr:0000:01:00.0

for now i turned off the unused DIS as root using [echo 'OFF' > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch] and i will probably keep doing this every time i turn on my laptop until i know what to do or next update or figure out what packages to downgrade

@ Oberon  Actually I would like to learn why this theme change to Vertex-Maia-Dark affected my Bank of America login when I did not intend that. I did not try to symlnk them originally because I did not care to be thematically consistent. I apply styles to Firefox as needed in my sense of aesthetic. In fact I tried one with Firefox to see if it had an effect on the login window. no change. So the real question in the end is: Why did changing over to the theme Vertex-Maia-Dark affect the login menu for Bank of America in Firefox when that was not wanted? I only tried a symlink after I noticed the change just to see if that "fixed" something that should not have even been affected, as I reasoned. So what did I miss?
Did I get the syntax right? I am very inexperienced at Linux.
Code: [Select]
$ ln -s /usr/share/themes/Firefox/Vertex-Maia-Dark/chrome ~/.mozilla/firefox/xyz.default/chrome
Thanks for your time Oberon

P.S. running 'yaourt -Su' on a command line allows one to manually select packages to update

You can make a bootable usb-stick with the Manjaro Live installation on it.

You can use UNetbootin to create such a usb stick in Linux or if you use Windows, then you can use Rufus.

AFAIK using UNetbootin with hybrid uefi-compatible images is not advised.

Simply
Code: [Select]
sudo dd if=image.iso of=/dev/<usb-device-id>NOTE: be very careful with this command or you will nuke your system

You have to copy or link the content of the theme's firefox/chrome folder to your profile:
Code: [Select]
ln -s /usr/share/themes/Firefox/Vertex-Maia-Dark/chrome/ .mozilla/firefox/<xyz123>.default/chrome

I think it would be best to specify '.mozilla/firefox/*.default/chrome' in such instructions because evidently newbies do not understand how to deal with '<xyz123>'.

By the way, if anyone is creating new firefox profiles all the time like me you can use this trick:
Code: [Select]
sudo mkdir -p /usr/lib/firefox/browser/defaults/profile
sudo ln -s /usr/share/themes/Firefox/Vertex-Maia-Dark/chrome/ /usr/lib/firefox/browser/defaults/profile/chrome

Contents of /usr/lib/firefox/browser/defaults/profile/ is always copied to any new profiles created.

i have the same issu.
where a add the 3?
i have many lines  ??? ??? ??? ???

To add a temporary boot parameter start the computer and when GRUB comes up, select the appropriate kernel and press the letter "e." This will allow you to edit. Go down to the line that starts with the word "linux." Go to the end of the line and put a 3. Make sure there is a space after the last entry. So, for example, if the last word is "splash" you will place the three like so "splash 3"

Now, press "ctrl+x" and in a few seconds you'll have a command line. Sign in as root and work your magic.

Encountered a couple of issues from this Update, strangely not theme related.

Connecting to SMB shares broke after the update. Downgrading smbclient libwbclient to previous version restored ability to connect. Appears to be a known bug https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/48987 (https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/48987)

Second, Nemo started crashing whenever I backed out of the Rubbish Bin and Recent. This is only triggered if those folders were set to display in List view. Got around it by setting the view for those locations to either Compact or Icon view. Again, looks like a known issue:https://github.com/linuxmint/nemo/issues/1156 (https://github.com/linuxmint/nemo/issues/1156) Seen in Caja as well, during testing.

Everything else fine so far. :)

Thanks to Rob, Heart of A Lion and Trinakrian for your input.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I had a blown psu due to a crappy coolermaster psu and a brownout combo (not my week.) You caught me Trinakrian, I usually do check, but this time I was complacent and didn't check the update notes regarding setting the graphics driver before performing this update  :-[

Unfortunately, I've tried all of the suggestions from everyone in this thread and still can't get to a login. Thankfully, I do have a complete backup that I will restore as a last resort, but since I have another computer to work with I'll continue to try and troubleshoot this and/or wait it out.

Some of the things I've tried:
-removed and reinstalled my nvidia drivers to no effect.
-tried to use the nouveau drivers and it made no difference, still got stuck on a black screen at login.
-reinstalled xorg, lightdm
-installed vertex themes and made the required changes to gtk greeter settings conf
-Tried to use lxdm to login instead of lightdm
-Tried various different kernels

Despite all this, still stuck at the same black screen at login. Thanks again for all the suggestions, a great community you've got here.

Peace

I hope this update cycle won't scare new Manjaro users away from the distro. Due to the switch to the new GTK we seem to be in a bit of a transition period.

The question is how this can be done more smoothly in the future, because right now over 35% of users have indicated to have run into issues according to the poll.

Actually I would like to learn why this theme change to Vertex-Maia-Dark affected my Bank of America login when I did not intend that.
My understanding is that when no chrome folder is present in your browser profile, firefox will try to use the theme's global css. Especially with dark themes this quite often doesn't work out so well with the user content, meaning the actual homepages displayed. For that reason many dark themes supply a specific userContent.css file, which is placed in the mentioned chrome folder next to userChrome.css. The latter in the case of vertex is not so crucial I think, but it does bring some nice extra features corresponding to the global theme.
Now in your case I still believe that there is something wrong with the inclusion of that userContent.css file.

@LA-MJ that makes a lot of sense, yes! Thank you!

@kmartin can you show us your output of
Code: [Select]
la ~/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/chrome
and then also maybe to doublecheck if the symlink is not broken:
Code: [Select]
ls /usr/share/themes/Firefox/Vertex-Maia-Dark/chrome

$ ls ~/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/chrome
chrome  userChrome.css
and:
Code: [Select]
$ ls /usr/share/themes/Firefox/Vertex-Maia-Dark/chrome
images  userChrome.css  userContent.css
Other themes I try do not have this problem, nor does your browser clearly. Could this be due to some of my about:config edits?

 Again Thanks.

@kmartin: especially for the gtk3 version of firefox you need some quirks. Using the userChrome.css is a workaround. However it should be also possible without it. So we have to fix it.

images  userChrome.css  userContent.css
yours:
Code: [Select]
$ ls ~/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/chrome

Did the update yesterday, after my computer came back from repairing. Almost 900MB, almost smooth as silk. I encounter the little glitch of theming broken, with the lightdm appearance broken, and I use arc-git from AUR. Thunderbird has some problems to follow, but it's cool anyway. The rest seems to be working well, you did again a real good job guys, update after update I'm still in love with Manjaro.

OK, I just registered a "smooth update" on the poll as the team did what was needed to assure that at least one theme (besides Adwaita) was ready with the update. That showed foresight and caring for users. They have also been very patient in helping folks over the rough spots despite the work -- and at times repitition. I don't think it is possible to ask for anything more for those heading a distribution.

A couple of footnotes:

@HeartofLion: The cost of having the latest is that we have to do a bit more work at times than with other distros, but the Manjaro teams makes it as painless as possible. Obviously there will be some who do not want to pay the price. The more important question at the moment affects the ISOs that do not use Vertex as the default theme. New users installing those ISOs and updating will now have their system partly broken without knowing why. Redoing ISOs perhaps recently released seems too much to ask, but perhaps a "readme" file should be included alongside the ISOs in the download folders.

@salome: 3.20 is not the problem. One hopes it is an improvement. The problem seems to lie with the gtk developers who do not respect the work of others sufficiently to allow theme authors enough time to respond -- and have broken theming over and over again in gtk3. I would certainly move to Qt if I did not find the programs I like the most based on gtk -- and one an integral part of Gnome.

@Oberon and philm: In updating my second machine I confirmed that not even a restart allowed Vertex to take effect fully (at least not in E), as in the pamac highlight bar, but things did right themselves after a shutdown and restart.

All that said, I'd like to repeat a special thanks to the Manjaro team.

The Emacs 24 toolbar comes up empty after the GTK update. Has anyone found a solution for that yet?

It's a known issue with GTK 3.20, see https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1621271#p1621271. Reportedly upgrading to emacs-git fixes the issue.

I personally love the Adwaita-manjaro theme and dislike the Vertex one. However, at first it looked okay, but now it looks like it's conflicting with the original Adwaita and the text for icons on the desktop is suddenly dark grey, instead of white.
I'm not sure what you mean with conflicting. ???
The icon text has its intended color. It's the same highlight color as everywhere else with the maia themes. With the regular Adwaita theme the icon text highlight for me is not white but blue:

The background problem looks more like one of those gsettings things ... Your're using Gnome, aren't you?

Yup, Gnome.

By conflicting I mean that the Adwaita-Manjaro "highlight" colour should be green instead of blue, right? But for some reason the blue "shines" through. You can see it on these images in my post. These screenshots are taken on the same system. As you can see, on the second image, the highlight colour is green and blue at the same time.

https://forum.manjaro.org/index.php?topic=33377.msg273849#msg273849

Not a major issue of course, I just use the regular Adwaita then, but would prefer the green highlight instead of blue - would make it look more "Manjaro" haha :) And also, the black/grey icon text on desktop makes it difficult to read on darker backgrounds. This "bug" doesn't appear on the regular Adwaita.

Who is responsible for the Adwaita-Manjaro theme development on Gnome? Maybe I should contact that person? Maybe it's my systems issue, but it occurs on 2 of my computers, one of them is a fresh install.

Firstly note that Vertex-Maia is the 'main' Manjaro theme and has had much more time spent on it, indeed Adwaita-Manjaro needs more work.

Until recently i'd only tested in Xfce (but also checked a number of GTK 3.20 apps), but now that i've checked it in Gnome 3 i see there's still some blue.

Not surprising really, look how many colour substitutions were needed to get Vertex-Maia where it is:
https://github.com/manjaro/packages-community/blob/master/vertex-maia-themes/PKGBUILD#L71

Where as Adwaita-Manjaro so far has only:
https://github.com/manjaro/packages-community/blob/master/adwaita-manjaro-themes/PKGBUILD#L57

Everyone can feel free to help with this, you just open in a text editor the file:
/usr/share/themes/Manjaro-Adwaita/gtk-3.0/gtk.css
and start checking all the hex colour codes in the file to see which of them are blue and then let us know. (Github pull requests for the PKGBUILD would be nice, but just posting codes is fine too (start a new thread though).)
You can type the codes into the "Hex" field on this site to check them:
http://colorizer.org/
Or you can use the colour chooser window in GIMP, or whatever.

Everything else is working smoothly, but my wireless X360 pads aren't working (they did two days prior to this update). The usb adapter works and registers 4 js devices, but the pads themselves don't seem to be syncing, I can get no action going looking at jstest-gtk. Looks like there was an update to xpad in the latest update. (Searching Arch wiki & forums suggests trying xboxdrv, but xpad did work just fine to me before.)

edit: except the xpad that was updated is a sticky notes program, and not the joystick kernel module...  ;D

@polibenex: If you look back through the thread, I recall seeing another post about increased temperatures. You can try another kernel to see if that fixes the problem. If not there may be an issue with the nVidia driver or bumblebee.

After the update the Nemo side bar is too narrow (see on the attachment). When I adjust it, next time I get the original size. I deleted the ~/.config/nemo directory, but did not help. In the past I simply resized the sidebar with mouse and it was fine. Is there any other way to set the sidebar's width?

Only just updated because I was away on holiday.

No real problems because I read the first post and installed/applied the appropriate Vertex-Maia themes - including the Firefox chrome fix - before a full update.

There was a slight issue with the login greeter theme being broken and looking ugly, but that was my own doing from about a year ago because I had at that time manually edited the lightdm greeter config file to specify the theme as Menda.  After amending the file again appropriately, everything was fine.

And the Maia themes seem so much more refined than the Menda ones.  The shade of green/teal is also nicer (YMMV).

Well, my laptop decided today was update day... and a big one it is. So catch you after the reboot :)

Update: extensions are broken, but are now updated.

And after some tweaking the the custom theme (i.e., setting it to 'default'), all seems the same as it was before.

Let's reboot again.

Update 2: all seems fine. Numix theme working like a charm (after an update from AUR).

So, thanks to all the Devs!

I've posted this several times now in different post, but here you go again ;)
https://github.com/horst3180/vertex-theme/issues/187
The issue only happens with libreoffice-fresh while the "-still" version has no problem.
The issue however is inherited from the original vertex theme. The issue there is pending 8) I guess horst3180 needs a little holiday after having re-coded his whole gtk-css ;) ;D fair enough...

@oberon: I just commented on github for horst3180. The Vertex-Maia-Dark theme works with LibreOffice-Fresh. It is only a problem with the light/square versions.

So, for those experiencing the problem, you can switch to either Adwaita as a light theme workaround . . . or take a walk on the dark side ("Do da do da do da do do do . . .").   :o

New Gtk 3.20 Vertex-Maia doesn't work with Lightfirefox (http://imgur.com/ceavcUa) browser. For example right scrollbar is not showing.

I'v tried this command with no luck

Please note Firefox is working without any issue.

Ever since I installed this update tuxguitar won't start anymore. It just hangs on the splash screen consuming 100% from one core forever. Doesn't output any errors into the terminal or any log I know of either, so I don't really have a clue about what's happening.
Nevertheless I'm highly suspicious it's due to the latest JRE update. I'll probably try and downgrade it later, even though I know I probably shouldn't.
