Title: Manjaro Cinnamon 16.02 (stable)
Post by: oberon on 23. February 2016, 01:35:53
The new stable release of Manjaro Cinnamon is online (https://sourceforge.net/projects/manjarolinux/files/community/Cinnamon/2016.02/)! 8)

In addition to the full featured edition this time we are also offering a minimal-edition without the big software packages like office suite, graphics software or mail-client. Like that, those who know about their preferred software they will want to install can benefit of the smaller download size of only 1GB as opposed to the big brother with 1.5GB

This edition is now "fully rolling" as you could say in that also the desktop settings and configuration is packaged and can be updated in the future. This is especially interesting in a gtk3-environment like Cinnamon, because via gsettings the default settings can be changed without overriding customized user settings.

Thanks to @ManjaroCinnamonFan this edition is styled with the new gtk-themes Vertex Maia and Vertex Maia Square, perfectly harmonizing with Maia icon theme.

It was quite easy (drag and drop files into ROXterm is cool) and fast (half a minute for computation), but needed an additional public key import.

Hi, @tychomerthon!
For the new settings you will have to install manjaro-cinnamon-settings. It's needs a tiny bit of manual intervention ;)
Code: [Select]
sudo rm -rf /etc/skeland then just
Code: [Select]
sudo pacman -S manjaro-cinnamon-settings
Let me know if it gives any conflicts - normally it shouldn't.
Additionally you will have to install vertex-maia-themes, the default wallpaper, menu icon and more are included in either cinnamon-wallpapers (with some other new wallpapers), or in the smaller package artwork-cinnamon-minimal
Let me know how it goes! ;)

I did the same in the terminal and it worked after I imported your public key. I posted it, because other users would have the same problem if they haven't yet imported your public key.
Well, it takes longer to check a signature on my machine because it has a slow Intel Atom 230.

Hm, I see. I would have expected that my key is known from manjaro-keyring - obviously pacman sources a different place then ... good to know.

thanks , i do it , and no problems , but when i use screenfetch , say the same , OS: Manjaro 15.12 Capella , no change  in a rolling no change the name of system?? :D
Title: Re: Manjaro Cinnamon 16.02 (stable)
Post by: oberon on 23. February 2016, 11:36:32
It goes like this:
Screenfetch will only tell you the official manjaro release tags. This is simply taken care of a package (lsb-release). It makes no difference really, just cosmetics ;)
The gsettings are applied for existing users aswell. When you open dconf-editor they will now be the default settings. So any entry that is displayed in bold writing there you can 'reset to default' and it will apply the settings of the latest package.
For a new user all will be at the default immediately of course...
Title: Re: Manjaro Cinnamon 16.02 (stable)
Post by: oberon on 23. February 2016, 11:38:32
My theory is that when you haven't ever changed a gsettings value, the new default should apply automatically. Values that you have changed at some point should be remembered as 'customized' by dconf and they will not be reset. - At least in Deepin it works like that ::) ???

What should also work is to simply delete your user level dconf blob.
But let my try this first on a test system!  O:-)

Ok, yeah, seems to work perfectly ;D
So make sure you have manjaro-cinnamon-settings installed aswell as xcursor-simpleandsoft and either artwork-cinnamon-minimal or cinnamon-wallpapers as mentioned before.

edit: you need maia-icon-theme and vertex-themes-maia, too! (cantarell-fonts should be present on any Manjaro install already, anyway...)

Now delete ~/.config/dconf/user and then simply log out and back in immediately without changing any settings before that. >:D

I'll add those packages as dependencies to manjaro-cinnamon-settings. So in the future you'll just have to install one package and you're set :)

I'm trying Cinnamon 16.02 on live USB, it runs smoothly on my low powered machine.
I'm not exactly keen on installing one more DE, but Cinnamon would be a candidate if Budgie breaks.  ^-^
One "bug": I changed the theme to Vertex-Maia-Square and the main menu gets transparent black, 90% maybe. Is this intentional? Maybe I would need to relogin?

It's the design of the theme, yes ;D But of course you can mix. Actually I like that, too when I use vertex maia square as the window theme I set the regular vertex maia as the cinnamon-theme...

Surprises me. Maybe that's more a question of the graphics driver... Or are you running it in software-rendering mode?
I was quite surprised when I made that little youtube video, that my other machine was having quite a hard time with window effects - even Deepin would run smoother on that machine! :o

I like it better than the other theme with two colours in the menu, but would prefer to disable transparency or make it almost invisible. But it is actually very nice! The other theme I don't like very much, but Cinnamon users are more used to the default look.

My compliments, a great release!

One request though: Please (re)create the release with the newest 4.4 kernel.
Then it would work out of the box with my XPS 13 9350 and probably other skylake laptops too.

Now I had to flddle a bit around to boot with the i915.preliminary_hw_support=1, then connect a LAN cable and update the kernel.
Only after that everything (including wifi) worked.

keep the good work going!

Hi birdibird and welcome! :)
The plan is that Manjaro switches to 4.4 with the 16.06 release. Right now this would still a bit premature I think.
A lot of hardware is still not running it smoothly afaik - including my own laptop ;)
I'm sorry that it was a bit of a hassle for you to get Cinnamon working on your machine - Thank you for bothering to do it anyway! :D

Hi guys,

I've been using Manjaro for almost 2 years and now I've decided to try out the Cinnamon edition. I must say that it's really great overall so congrats to the team.

Alas, I have encountered 2 nagging issues that I don't know how to deal with, the first one is that I cannot change the desktop wallpaper, I've tried the normal way and through right clicking an image in Firefox but both methods failed (fixed it by renaming the default maia.jpg wallpaper to maia.jpgbak). The second problem that I have is that Ctrl + Alt + T combination that launches the Terminal doesn't work, as a matter of fact it doesn't work with any other combination either. I'm really clueless here because I had no such problems when using the Xfce edition.

Checksum of your ISO-file ok?
Did you play around with your dconf settings somehow? >:D C:-) ;D

Great release. Manjaro is my number one without a doubt  :)

I found something strange in the menu. When I type the g in the search-bar of the menu it shows up as a q. The search however is correctly done by the menu (it searches for software with a g). So not a big issue, but it looks a little bit weird.

I made a screenshot where I typed left the the g and on the right side the q (no capitals). They look exactly the same  ;)

Keep up the good work - I have a lot of respect for all the developers!

Very weird. Three different downloads of the ISO. I made three different USB flash drives. All three produce the same thing. Downloaded 15.12, made a USB flash drive and it loaded without issue. I installed that and am running the "testing" repo. Will that get me to what's available in 16.02? If not, what do I need to install?

After initial install of 15.12 I did sudo pacman-mirrors -g > sudo pacman-optimize && sync > sudo pacman -Syyu.

Then changed to "testing" and did the commands again. I should be fully up-to-date.

I've bookmarked your link and will give it a shot after work tomorrow. Many thanks for the response!

No hurry for me for the update, it's a minor issue and the only one I found. I tested this release version since it came out and it works perfect. Kudos for all of you. I use Manjaro since a year (maybe longer) and it is a pleasure to use it on my computer!

Just downloaded and verified it correctly with gpa. (and no need to check hash manually anymore, yay)
Great to see that somebody learned from the Mint-incident!

Download-numbers sig/iso on Sourceforge are frightening though (0,6%), but that is THEIR problem, not mine.
I, for my part, want to be sure I installed a clean OS, so thank you for the SIG, and keep doing that little extra work!

Hm, I see. I would have expected that my key is known from manjaro-keyring - obviously pacman sources a different place then ... good to know.
The manjaro-keyring can be found here: /etc/pacman.d/gnupg/pubring.gpg
It can simply be imported with gpa, enigmail or "gpg --import" to the personal gpg keyring (~/.gnupg/pubring.kbx)
Did that some days ago, and it worked beautifully, maybe this could be an optional step during/after installation?

One suggestion though: please publish the Fingerprint of your GPG-Key somewhere! Could not find it anywhere.
Best way would be to add Fingerprints to https://manjaro.github.io/team/
Make sure the page is https, currently (unlike https://manjaro.github.io/) it defaults to http!
And while you are at it, add something like "Download a file with the public GPG keys of our team here..." to https://manjaro.github.io/team/
Thanks!

Update:
Recently I transferred/synced the iso to my other PC via Unison (basically rsync over ssh) on a private Wlan.
Before starting Isousb, I rechecked the sig, astonishingly, with Nemo/Cinnamon a doubleclick on it starts a check automatically (and it's apparently not done with gpa) - is this a "custom" Nemo/Manjaro script?

Anyway, the check failed, so checked the hash of the iso (thinking that unknown verify-script to be somehow faulty) but really, the iso file was not the "right" one  :o
Was convinced until now that Unison/rsync/ssh has means to verify correct transfer of files, unlike some simple transfer via udp etc...?!

Shows that there a real world use-cases of .sig files other than man-in-the-middle attacks, especially if verify is easier/faster than manual hash-check (once you have imported necessary public keys).

           Hello fellow Cinnamon users

My Observations

I installed the Minimal Edition 16.02 -- Really had some pain getting AUR functionality working in Pamac Package Manager.

How I finally solved this was actually changing Updates-Repository to Unstable in the config-file.

Seems strange in my mind that unstable-updates functions better than stable in the Minimal Edition.

Nothing strange here, Rocky-IV. In unstable the AUR issue probably got fixed and the fixed version will arrive soon in stable.

If you have a fairly powerful system the DE shouldn't matter very much. In my experience of course. I did some testing and the difference between Plasma 5 with two activities and 20+ windows running and a fresh start of i3 was one 1 fps when in the 40fps range. And even that may have been a coincidence
What i think is important is to be able to control the compositor. Being able to use it's v-sync for games that don't have it while being able to turn it off for those that do is very useful.
Plasma 5 can do that and (last I tried) Gnome can not. For the rest I don't know.
With Nvidia you could turn on/off the equivalent of v-sync with a command, so then the DE matters even less although it might be a bit easier/faster to use the compositor.

If no, well never mind  O:-)
Is 15.500 downloads a week a lot? Are there comparing download numbers of all the different Manjaro flavors? - Others then those per Week who probably greatly vary depending on their release date.

No. I was merely impressed by the download numbers. Yes 15.000 in a week is an awful lot for a community edition.
And I know. A while ago I also commented on how small the download numbers of the checksums are. But of course people have to decide for themselves if they find it necessary to verify the legitimacy of their install media. We can only provide the possibility to do so... ;)

It's partly a free-riding behaviour. It isn't needed that everybody checks, it is likely legit if some have checked and didn't report an abuse.

If you have 32 Gb of memory you need not worry about performance regardless of the desktop environment. There shouldn't be any noticeable difference bar the compositors used.

Date  and time settings cause cinnamon-settings to crash after update. Will investigate.
Seems fixed already with another update just now cinnamon-settings-daemon 2.8.4-3 :)

Can you specify which bugs? I don't have the same impression. For me everything runs smoothly.
You appear to run compiz?

After running Cinnamon on top of Xfce for a year, I decided to install it properly in place of Xfce and am greatly impressed with the look and feel of this community edition. Great job!  :)

My only complaint is that my Kodak Aio printer is not listed among those offered when I tried to add the printer. In the past the printer and drivers were always available. Now, if I can only remember which folder and file to open so I can add the drivers.  ::)

p.s. Please note that I could previously install the driver (c2esp) via Pamac and AUR. In fact, after a fresh install of Manjaro Xfce last week, I was still able to do so. Currently, it is not in Pamac and although listed in AUR, it will not install. So, I downloaded the drivers through SourceForge and then tried to install it the via cli, which also failed.  ???

Meanhile...I installed jbig-kit and tried again with ./configure, make, and make install with success. I can print again! :)

Allow me to put my above praise into a more appropriate context. Once upon a time, I recall posting that no one does Openbox like CrunchBang did. Until recently, I would also have argued that no one does Cinnamon like Mint, but I think that this Manjaro community edition of Cinnamon is first rate. To Ringo, Oberon, and everyone who's contibuted to developing Manjaro Cinnamon during the past year, thank you for your contribution to a beautiful, rock-solid DE!  :)

Thank you very much, g33zr for your kind words, and thank you for not forgetting Ringo, who has done most of the development for this edition originally. I found an extremely well prepared house when I took over ^-^
cheers!

Nice Oberon! So you are in charge of Deepin and Cinnamon? EPIC! Keep up the good work!
And thanks Ringo for the initial developments. Is Ringo OK? He seemed a bit down when he announced his departure from MATE.
