Title: manjaro-i3 15.12
Post by: oberon on 29. December 2015, 15:48:38
i3-15.12 images are now available at
https://sourceforge.net/projects/manjarolinux/files/community/i3/2015.12/

Thanks to all the community input and thanks to @Chrysostomus's and @excalibur1234's brilliant work this latest release includes a complete set of command line applications together with their GUI alternatives.
It now includes the awesome CLI settings manager Bmenu with package manager Pacli.
Filebrowser Ranger and music-player Moc have been added, pre-configured and customized.
Also we have cooked up scripts to automatically add and remove Pulseaudio on top of the default Alsa installation together with the necessary config being adjusted and Volumeicon being exchanged with Pa-applet on the fly. 8)

Again i3 comes with Systemd or OpenRC of course.

Awesome. I am loving this i3 spin...

I have some basic questions. I already have the manjaro-i3 edition installed. When an update like this comes out, only my already installed packages will get updated, but I won't get any of the new goodness. What is the best way to get the new features?

As an example, you mentioned new command line tools. Is it just a matter of finding those packages in the manjaro repo and installing them? (i.e. Ranger, Moc, Bmenu, Pacli, etc.) By doing so, will I also get all the pre-configuration and customization that you mentioned?

What about the Pulseaudio scripts you mentioned?

Well, it depends...
The new packages you will need are indeed
Code: [Select]
sudo pacman -S bmenu pacli ranger moc
With the config it's a bit more tricky... ::)
There is a new folder for ranger to go into ~/.config
https://github.com/manjaro/manjaro-tools-iso-profiles/tree/devel/community/i3/i3-overlay/etc/skel/.config

moc has a folder ~/.moc
https://github.com/manjaro/manjaro-tools-iso-profiles/tree/devel/community/i3/i3-overlay/etc/skel
and a custom theme-file in /usr/share/moc/themes/
https://github.com/manjaro/manjaro-tools-iso-profiles/tree/devel/community/i3/i3-overlay/usr/share/moc/themes

The pulse/alsa scripts install_pulse and rm_pulse live in /usr/local/bin
https://github.com/manjaro/manjaro-tools-iso-profiles/tree/devel/community/i3/i3-overlay/usr/local/bin
BUT in order for them to work you need to adjust your ~/.i3/config to contain exactly these lines:
Code: [Select]
exec --no-startup-id volumeicon
bindsym $mod+Ctrl+m exec terminal -e 'alsamixer'
#exec --no-startup-id pulseaudio
#exec --no-startup-id pa-applet
#bindsym $mod+Ctrl+m exec pavucontrol

Hmmm... Thanks for the comprehensive reply... but I don't want to have to bother you with every update. Is this the only way to update a current installation? Is there a way for a user to find this information on his own?

What does everyone else do?

Yeah - it's sloooow, sorry ;)
Systemd i686 will take about 2 more hours and x86_64 will have to run overnight...

@huladaddy, it's no problem at all to explain it here once :)
In any case the skeleton folder here (https://github.com/manjaro/manjaro-tools-iso-profiles/tree/master/community/i3/i3-overlay/etc/skel) will always show you the files the way they are for a freshly installed user.

This link you provided looks great. I'll have lots of fun poking around there...

So between your "changelog" above in the OP, and the skeleton folder, we should be able to keep up to date? I am quite surprised there isn't an easier or more automated way to keep our installations current.

Oberon,
downloaded, dd'd on a usb stick, booted.
Every app I tried worked out of the box.
Even OpenVPN  8)

Memory usage under 300MB.
Excellent!

!!! Good Job !!!

I don't think so.

I use..
Code: [Select]
# Disable and enable gaps
bindsym $mod+o          gaps inner current set 0; gaps outer current set 0
bindsym $mod+p          gaps inner current set 10; gaps outer current set 10
bindsym $mod+Shift+p gaps inner current set 10; gaps outer current set 40

I get the same. It throws you back to the front page, yes. :P
What still works for me is downloading with Filezilla via sftp from frs.sourceforge.net
I think you need a sourceforge account for that, but you can simply create one of course.

I have tried out the latest 15.12 i3 image (systemd / x86_64), but had some issues with it (tried with both the cli or calamares installer). After the installation completed, the i3 configuration overlay was not copied onto my existing home partition, though I did mark it during the installation properly that it should be mounted under /home, which happened as expected, only no configuration was present after the reboot, so the i3 wizard popped up. I made sure to delete any existing configuration files and folders before starting the installation, so there was no .config or .i3 folder on the home partition, only insignificant folders with my data. The process was retried 3 times, with the same result. At the end I solved the problem by cloning the manjaro git repo and copying everything from the skel folder onto my home partition, and after a reboot everything popped up as expected.
The next issue was that after I executed the pulse audio installer script, the i3 configuration was updated so that it contained two entries for loading pulseaudio, specifically these two lines:
Code: [Select]
exec --no-startup-id pulseaudio
exec --no-startup-id pa-applet

appeared two times, once in the section with the comment: "sound-section - DO NOT EDIT if you wish to automatically upgrade Alsa -> Pulseaudio later!", and once again at the bottom with the rest of the applets that are loaded, which resulted in two volume icons being present.

Dammit, my mistake. Appears I forgot to delete those lines further down in the config  :P ::)
I had tested the script only in the live-environment, but the config file for the final install is actually copied over from a different folder, and the bug is "only" in that one - sorry for that!
As for your home folder: If you use an existing /home partition without formatting it, the installer will not overwrite it I guess.... ;)

edit: Have corrected that in the Systemd versions now, OpenRC ISOs will be updated until tomorrow... :)

Ah I see, thanks for the quick reply, as for this issue with existing home partitions, can we expect a change / fix for that, or it is the expected behavior, not to copy anything there if the partition is not formatted ?

That's not gonna work - you will have to decide if you want your files overwritten or not, BUT: What you can do is create a user with a different name than the old one, OR in any case you will find all the new config in /etc/skel! :)

Accidentally tried your i3 edition. Couple of notes:

1) I like the notifications, and the conky is helpful for newcomers
2) Overall feeling is very polished
3) Gtk theme is not what I would choose, but that is a matter of taste
4) A matter of eyesight/screensize: Fonts are quite small, as is i3bar. Hard to see at 13"/1920x1080. I'd use terminus or some other terminal font for terminal.
5) Palemoon seems nice.

It is possible to resize windows either with the mouse or with the keyboard. The ease of using the mouse depends on how wide your window borders are; you have to get right on the borders since there's another window right on the other side.

I think (might remember wrong) that i3 does it the same way as bspwm: super+drag with right click. If so, the rootmenu package used in bspwm edition should work in i3 edition too (left click window gap to start window resizing). As a bonus you get openbox style desktop menu.  :)

Fonts in gtk settings were ok, it was the terminal and i3bar that I had trouble with.

Both mouse buttons actually work ;)
If you like to use that feature more ofter, in your config might be helpful:
Code: [Select]
# change borders
bindsym $mod+y border pixel 4
So when you want to resize a container and you hit mod+y first, the border will be easier to grab ;)
And since with i3-gaps 'border normal' doesn't work, I have changed $mod+n to
Code: [Select]
border pixel 2Like that I can easily switch back to 'my' normal borders afterwards :)
Title: Re: manjaro-i3 15.12

@ oberon

The beauty is that pressing the floating modifier makes you independent of clicking on the border, hence making it unnecessary to set a border / make the border bigger. It's much more comfortable to resize pressing the modifier than trying to hit the border. :)

In gaps-next it does work… mostly. It displays correctly, but resizing causes some glitches, which I'm also working on fixing.

After the last update, now, pcmanfm, palemoon browser, and lxterminal are opening only on one workspace(and maybe a lot other apps but I tested  them)

-For example, if I open lxterminal on workspace 2, then try to open lxterminal on other workspace, it will open new window again on workspace 2.

Why? And also Chromium, Emacs for now are not affected by this(and maybe other apps too). But really, why this? It irritates me.

EDIT:
Confirmed, this behavior is first appeared when I fresh install manjaro-i3-15.12-x86_64.iso and update
SO, where can I fill an issue or bug?
TL;DR
I have issue with opening program's window on workspaces.

Yes, here you are

NOTE:

- This file is untouched, means this is a clean installation of Manjaro i3 edition, and not updated after installation(and this issue also happens after update too)

I really don't know why is this issue, but, it happens on specific application, now I found that they are: pcmanfm, lxterminal and palemoon, but not other stock apps(such as pinta or vlc, they are working just fine)
And note this: The strange behaviour started yesterday. At first I thought "meh, again I made silly thing" and reinstalled the system, and again the strange issue is here.

I really don't know about this, but thank you man about your response.

Have a good day :)

Hey, you said that you have same problem here.

Can you test this:
- Make a shortcut for pinta and vlc to start,
- Start them on different workspaces, but do not close previously opened
- Try to do the same with Pcmanfm and/or lxterminal and see if you have the same problem as me.

If you do, please reply detailed, so we can see what's the problem really.

Thanks.

Hello,

First of all, thanks for your work, very good release :)

I tried to change rxvt opcacity because I can't see the text well with my current wallpaper and opacity.

But when I look in .Xressources I see the opacity settings commented and in .config/compton.conf I tried setting the opcaity for rxvt from 93 to 99 (I don't know if that's the good setting, I didn't delve too much in compton's config options) but didn't change anything.

Can you point out the good place for this setting ? I feel I could find but easier asking the maker  ;D

Thanks again !

EDIT: Also, the usual ctrl+shift+c/v for copy past in terminal doesn't seem to work ...
Title: Re: manjaro-i3 15.12
Post by: oberon on 12. February 2016, 21:52:39
Hi grimblee!
:) You were absolutely in the right place in .Xresources!
The line you have to edit (when you say you are using compton) is this one:
Code: [Select]
URxvt.background: [75]#000000In this example here #000000 specifies the background color, so black. and 75 is the percentage of opacity.
So if you want the terminal less transparency you will need to increase that number.
For the changes to take effect you have to log out and back in... :)
Good luck and have fun with i3! 8)

I just posted to another thread https://forum.manjaro.org/index.php?topic=7961.msg256911#msg25691 (https://forum.manjaro.org/index.php?topic=7961.msg256911#msg25691) something that may be of interest here since it happened in manjaro-openrc-i3, and seems to me should be corrected by a maintainer. It's probably better to reply to this on that other thread; I just copied it here since I thought many i3 users wouldn't be following the entire manjaro forum (I don't).

I've traced a persistent and fatal fork-bomb problem back to manjaro's default .bashrc file (or to the caller to xdg-open, see below). If you don't know what a fork-bomb is, well, I'll let you look it up, but what's relevant here is the result: your system slowly but surely grinds to a halt, until no mouse or keyboard input is processed.

/etc/skel/.bashrc is the system-wide default bash config file, so if you:
Code: [Select]
grep BROWSER /etc/skel/.bashrcyou'll see that, for manjaro-openrc-xfce, the default browser is being set to /usr/bin/xdg-open, and for manjaro-openrc-i3 there are TWO lines, the first for /usr/bin/palemoon, and the later one for /usr/bin/xdg-open.

With $BROWSER set to anything, the 'xdg-settings set' command will refuse to change the default.

So the simple solution is to change the definition in your local and system-wide .bashrc.

Please manjaro maintainers, fix this in /etc/skel/.bashrc, and set some form of fork bomb protection by default in /etc/security/limits.conf.

Really, though, this is a bug in the program calling xdg-open, in that for some reason its persistant in a way that's causing a fork-bomb. I've contacted the maintainers of that project, but I'd appreciate backup from any well-connected manjaro g[uy|al] out there.

FWIW, In my particular case, a command line program (fossil ui) was trying to open a url on localhost

I'm preparing all three atm.
Deepin and Cinnamon will very likely be released with the next stable update, so beginning of next week, i3 possibly a week later or so ... :)

Rodger! I just don't want i3 to go the way of Flux! This iso provides a huge need! I would say it parallels with how manjaro allows people who are interested in Arch but can't deal with installing font rendering or configuring compton. This allows people who want to try a tiling manager but don't know how to get i3 to boot up instead of a DE!

Excited for the new iso!

hehe yeah! Maybe make the outline for the active window an orange or pink on the solar palette? Make it really pop :)

Also, the Flattr icon theme goes really well with solar!

Looking forward to new i3. I keep bouncing back and forth from i3 to OB. I like the look of the last OB but fear that edition will lie dormant for a while. I have really been enjoying qutebrowser as well.

Just installed a fresh i3 wiping my entire drive after the last update ate my install. Super sweet, thank oberon for your excellent work!

Fresh after install I had no sound and playing with alsamixer I couldn't get it to work, install_pulse fixed that in a second, awesome!! Is there a message or notification after the first boot pointing towards install_pulse? If yes, I missed it. If no I think it would be a great way to advertise this killer feature, only because I remembered the discussion in this board about it did I google for it to find the command ..

I wish you more luck with this fresh install, muncharo! :)
The pulse script is mentioned in the help file, which is referenced in the shortcuts-conky... Hm, don't know what would be better - something more popping up besides Manjaro-Welcome seems a bit too much ;) ::)

I really enjoy what you've done there, oberon! I would never have put my fingers on i3 if it weren't for your work.
Also nice to see that i3 is actively developed upstream, which makes me want to stick with i3 instead of moving to Gnome > 3.20.

I wonder if there is interest to add

Code: [Select]
for_window [title="Bluetooth Devices"] floating enable

To .i3/config by default to enable the blueman-manager to float just like pavucontrol does, for me they are similar config dialogs, I mess around with something playing music or video in fullscreen while I try to get sound / bluetooth to work so the floating makes more sense for me than to tile it.
