The Manjaro Community is proud to present our new Budgie Desktop Release.

From Solus Project :
Quote
Budgie is the flagship desktop of the Solus Operating System, and is part of the Solus Project. Designed with the modern user in mind, it focuses on simplicity and elegance. A huge advantage for the Budgie desktop is that it is not a fork of another project, but rather one written from scratch with integration in mind.

The Budgie Desktop tightly integrates with the GNOME stack, employing underlying technologies to offer an alternative desktop experience. In the spirit of open source, the project is compatible with and available for other Linux distributions.

Also note that Budgie can now emulate the look and feel of the GNOME 2 desktop, optionally, via a setting in the panel preferences. An example of this is shown in a screenshot further down.

This release is based on Budgie Desktop V8.3 ( thank you to Ikey Doherty and dev team Solus for this stage version ), this realese
include all benefit of Manjaro System and ready for today use .

Kernel 4.1.x series LTS
Evopop Icon and theme
Libreoffice suite
Brasero
Isotousb
Smplayer
Firefox
Thunderbird
Full support for AUR
Hexchat preconfigurated for access in our IRC channels
Ready for setup printer easily
All our installer ( calamares , Thus and CLI )
and dock plank in hide mode ( left screen )
Solved problem on autologin in livecd

Enjoy

Nice Ste74!
This look AMAZING! Can't wait to try it! Seriously considering swapping my XFCE for budgie...However, I have two questions...
1. How is the development of the budgie desktop going? Are there a lot of issues/bugs to sort out still?
2. Do you think it would become an official release of Manjaro eventually?

Today I was looking a distro arch based with Budgie, I found http://chromixium.org/about/ (http://chromixium.org/about/) based on ubuntu but I am not satisfied, even if it has look and feel of Google’s Chrome OS. However, can you put gmail, google drive etc in Manjaro Budgie?

Jeeze, I got Budgie & Deepin on the brain so much I sometimes don't know which DE I'm in...

Ahah, it's Budgie! (at the moment)

Stefano, you nailed it with this release! It is a better Budgie DE on MJRO than on Solus, (IMHO).

I added gnome-shell pkg just long enough to login to GNOME, setup 1-click opening in Nautilus, add minimize/maximize window buttons, then removed gnome-shell. I think I'm gonna actually keep it on here for a couple days. Next goal is to get openweather gnome-shell-extension working on the Budgie panel...

You & oberon rock! :D :D :D

I think installing dconf-editor will make your life in both budgie and deepin a lot easier! :)
With this little tool I start to like the gsettings concept - it's a bit overwhelming in the beginning, but on the other hand you can really configure practically everything from there... :)
btw. you can also easily add gnome-shell to deepin. The deepin-greeter will provide a nice selection for you on the login screen.

I got system freeze ( only hard reboot or power cut is solution to reboot my laptop ) when I go in menu and scrolls via menu, system tools etc .. How I can recover my laptop like in windows with CTRL+ALt+DEL ? or how I can see which app or process bring to freeze ?

P.S

one funny thing..While I installing new kernel , looking through apps in menu, also got system freeze..But in background window i saw that new kernel is downloaded and installed..but except that and after that , I can't do nothing. Full unresponsible system..maybe it is due gnome ,desktop or something ?

didn't work for me either, lots of hiccups, freezes every 5 minutes. Have the standard set up, changed nothing.
Don´t no what to do, think switch back to XFCE and wait until it's more stable.

@c00ter How's budgie treating you? Did you come across any breakages/bugs?
I am SUPER tempted to install budgie DE

@Fatboy, I've been running Budgie in either Manjaro (Stefano's build) or in Arch for 3-4 days and have had no problems with it. Budgie is, for want of a better description, a Window Manager for GNOME that replaces GNOME Shell as the window manager.

(Hint: If you build it yourself, Lxsession is the glue that binds Budgie to GNOME.)

If you can run GNOME without issue, you can run Budgie without issue. If you have problems with GNOME--like that stupid cogl thing--you may have problems with Budgie. I'm running it on a Core i7 Intel/Intel/Intel machine. Budgie for me has been without problems so far.

Here's Budgie on vanilla Arch, with Plank & Variety. Screenshot Nov. 2 & today is Nov. 4 and I'm still running the same build. That's kinda unusual for me. ;)

Regards.

P.S. Budgie in Manjaro or Arch is presently more stable than SolusOS, it's 'native' distro. (Anecdotal, since people tend to post 'it broke' more than 'it runs' posts.) That is too be expected since Solus is so new and under such current heavy development. I'm just very glad Ikey Doherty chose to share this nice new thing with Stefano & the rest of us. :D :D :D

Well just installed budgie 32 bit for the fourth time on that old 1.7 ghz dual core laptop and guess what, the screen freezing is gone. Does it have something to do with the last Manjaro update?
And it consumes less ram. about 350 mb. I'm pleased with it.

Thanks guys, keep up with the good work on Manjaro   :)   :)   :)

If you stop services such as pamac & mhwd updaters, you can whittle it downwards. Without Plank & Variety running on this 64-bit install <230 MB free -m is achievable.  That's if you run into any problems. GNOME per se is not particularly light on resources. Even pared to the max, and <250 MB on 64-bit GNOME is hard. With Budgie, it's pro quo assuming 'normal' OS-only related services running.

As I'm normally a GNOME user and run GNOME applications for the most part, I really appreciate the ability to run apps such as Weather, Maps, and Lollypop in Budgie. That is not always easily possible in other 'light' DEs such as Xfce without extensive GNOME/Gtk3 libraries. All that stuff really bifurcates my desktop (and causes problems) so I normally don't do so in Xfce. A large part of Budgie's appeal to me is to have an Xfce-like desktop but run heavyweight apps such as GNOME's and still have it function well AND look nice without having two DEs installed and the attendant problems that can bring. And I can add 'bells & whistles' to my heart's content but still keep a 'light' feel. :D

When a person examines the history of GNOME and the forking of Cinnamon and MATE from GNOME by Linux Mint, you can see that there was (and is, IMHO) a high demand for a GNOME without the Shell. To me--and I dunno who else--Cinnamon & MATE are close, but not quite it. Cinnamon is Gtk3, but still is/was/feels glitchy to me (Cinnamon, not Ringo :D). MATE is rock-solid but its Gtk3 is still a separate experimental branch. Xfce is a rock-solid, lightweight DE and its plugins make it what it is but it lacks full Gtk3 compatibility (at this time). Budgie is not all there yet, but it's good enough for my simple uses. A few more panel plugins and it will be as complete as Xfce, (borrowing from GNOME, of course).

So--final analysis then I shut up. :D  Budgie gives me the lightness & customization ability of Xfce, the robustness and applications of GNOME, the solidarity of one DE, and it's cool.  :P

And I was getting really bored. Thanks to Stefano (and oberon's Deepin) and Ikey Doherty's Solus, that is no longer boolean. I gotta few old-age related physical problems (it's normal) so farting-around with Linux is about all I can do.  :D :D :D

Regards.

Thanks c00ter for your extensive reaction and insights on the gnome and budgie desktop, it's appreciated and I agree.
Just removed plank from budgie and it reduces ram usage with 45 mb. See what else I can do to make budgie more perfect with less ram usage.

Look in /home/username/.config/autostart and it will give you an idea what services are started/stopped. "ps_mem" will also help you narrow them. Nomilly, a Manjaro install will run a pamac/octopi updater and the MJRO hardware/kernel/whatever utility. They can both be stopped...

-I'd choosen auto-login(thus) but it never worked, after restarting it was never be changed from settings manager.
-I couldn't add conky to starting programs, then I copied the only one starter plank and changed the includings
-I installed google-chrome from pamac but it was nevershown on the menu untill restarting

The best advice I can give is that Budgie is under heavy development at this time. A lot of things will be new to users that are new to Budgie. A lot of things--being as it is under development--you may have to figure out for yourselves. Some rather rudimentary things that you might expect in similar-looking DEs either do not yet exist or you, the user, will need to modify a configuration file in order to accomplish.

Making friend's with dconf-editor is required. Budgie is new. As far as GNOME-forks go, Budgie is at the cocktail-fork stage. ;D ;D ;D

I've been using your flavour since yesterday. I really like it. It's lightweight and fast. Although I can't seem to be able to change the background picture in the logging screen.

Thanks and keep up the good work!!

Install lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings.

@Ste74: there is a new lxsession available in AUR that looks sharp & is made for Gtk3. Package name is "lxsession-gtk3." I use it in my Arch+Budgie install; it works well.

Regards.

I meant xsession-gtk3 would be a nice (and nice looking) gtk3-based replacement for your lxsession 1:0.5.2-1.1 from manjaro-budgie-2015.11-x86_64-pkgs.txt. Probably doesn't matter now due to Ikey's in-progress total re-write. :D

I'm new to Manjaro and installed Budgie 32bit on a EeePC 1005HA (2009) Intel Atom N270 / 1.6 GHz to see how it goes. Have issues with the reported freezing when surfing the web etc. Clicking on Power in All Settings for example initiate a freeze that is only broken by pressing power off button. Launching terminal with user specified keys does not work. Keyboard selection is locked until "New Accelerator" is typed and the previous Accelerator setting is deleted and can not be recovered. For now I'm thinking of using another Manjaro version instead as I bump into these freezing issues already at the set-up stage. Perhaps the freezing only occurs on old PC:s as @robbi3 suggested?

Playing with the budgie desktop for some weeks now, installed manjaro budgie, solus os, and pure arch with budgie;
Same problems everywhere, freezing occurs somethimes on new pc's also and there are some other little issue's whitch are not completly solved yet.
Remember Budgie is under heavy development. But I still like budgie and i think this is the way to go, just waite some weeks for the realy stable realease, they are working on it.

I installed Manjaro Budgie in a VM the other day. The DE is beautiful and really slick. But it does freeze up alot still, but it's a good work in progress for sure.

I think I'll try downloading Solus and try that aswell. Curious to see how they handle package management etc, when it's "Linux from Scratch". :)

i tried Solus OS today i was curious about the the high ranking on distrowatch in the last 7 days but i'm afraid (even if it looks great) it will take some time to make it functional and usable . I didn't want anything fancy just to run steam and a dozen of problems popped up. I don't know if you can use it for anything more serious than browsing sadly. It doesnt support debian and neither ubuntu packages so the software you can choose from is very limited. Imo that's a bad way for a new distro to start. It just sounds cool when you say built from scratch but then when you think how much work is ahead of those good people to port just the more popular apps then you can imagine that it will take ages to get to the level of the mainstream distros. Do you have any idea when budgie could be viable on manjaro/arch ? I'm addicted to these spin offs :D Cheers guys and have a happy New Year!

Since Budgie is somewhat of a GNOME Shell replacement, and expo works well in GNOME, it should be possible in Budgie. However, in GNOME expo is usually a shell extension, and shell extensions are verboten in Budgie. Another thought is the idea of compiz in Budgie, which I have not looked into.

Regards.

Well I am back at testing Solus and i saw an interesting keybind "Show all apps" (compiz scale?!) it's bound to super+A or something like that but it isnt working sadly... The only reason im reserved towards budgie now is the somwhat lack of multitasking you can get with cinnamon/xfce-skippy or i3/qtile. All in all i'll stick with this DE for now.

My Manjaro XFCE has always had Compiz (I think I'm on Manjaro's 0.9 series) installed on it.  When I added Budgie-desktop to the installation, I found that Compiz continued  to work even in Budgie -- at least the expo, cover flow and windows min/max/close effects did.  I don't really use the more complicated effects anyway.

i'm using gala on xfce , same as you i only need expo/scale feature other stuff doesn't interest me that much. imo gala fits better to xfce and i like gala's "multitasking screen" (aka expo) more. i'm just sad that many will be turned off by the Solus project because of the lack of software available and the minor bugie bugs or better said lack of features.

C00ter has become Dr.Budgie  ;D 8)

Dr. All-the-weird-Gnome-offsprings ??? :o ;) ;D

I have a Chinese-speaking parrot, what else can I say?  ;D

Seriously though, I like watching Budgie as it grows into an Xfce-like lightweight interface to GNOME/GTK3. That's the direction I envision it going.

I like Deepin, too, and have struggled to implement it on Manjaro NET and Arch bases since it first became available as an Unofficial Arch repo a couple years back. And never favorably, since up until now it just would not coalesce. Not even if I glared really hard at it. ;D

So Bernhard, you and Stefano and all the work you've put into your projects have made it really, really easy for people like me to play with them both now--I am so tired of all the old standard DE/WMs--that I feel like a kid in a candy shop. What also impresses me greatly, is the cooperation and teamwork that you and Stefano have demonstrated individually in your work with other members of the Linux developer community. You two are aces in my book. :D

Right this moment, I'm back in GNOME. Other than the fact I look like a Gnome, I miss it's capabilities when I am not using it. :D

My final thoughts are thus: If I'm weird, then what do you call the people that develop these "All-the-weird-Gnome-offsprings?" Hmm? ;)

And regarding simgin? Disregard that little heathen. :D :D :D

Regards.
P.S. I really do have a Chinese speaking parrot. Her name is Amy Lu.

I looked at tweak tools desktop & didn't see that option. I'll look again I guess.
I found it, I needed to turn on the master switch top right!! D'oh!

Somewhat off-topic: Did any of you see the Solus OS review on Distrowatch? What are your thoughts?
Are the same "glitches" seen for Manjaro budgie?

No, they aren't. The problems mentioned in the review are USB stick not booting and package manager misbehaving. Manjaro Budgie Edition boots ok and the package manager is the same as on other Manjaro editions. I have different problems, see the neighbouring thread: https://forum.manjaro.org/index.php?topic=29774.msg248576#msg248576

We should prolly discuss this in the 16.01 RC....

I believe Budgie is better on an Arch base than on a Solus base, and Stefano's version is better than Solus'. My own opinion is that Ikey should pick one or the other--Solus or Budgie--and work on that exclusively. But Ikey takes really big bites and I've already pissed him off once, so I will not be suggesting anything to him. ;)

My preference is he work on Budgie, since I am in no ways straying from an Arch base for any man's DE. Har! :D

There will be porting problems if he strays too far from GNOME and codes a new DE. IMHO.

Regards.

Found my input method was set to Italian with an English install. Didn't notice it until the youth was using Google docs on Firefox.

@c00ter I think Ikey should develop the Budgie DE only and work with Manjaro to deliver the best possible user experience :) Imagine! Aaah, one can dream.
I'm thinking of formatting my Multimedia PC, which is currently running Manjaro XFCE. I'm contemplating installing Manjaro Cinnamon, Budgie or Deepin.
Scared of breakages and don't know which one would be the most "stable". I don't know.haha

Meh, it's Ikey's decision to co-develop an OS and a DE. Personally, I would stick with the DE; maybe take a hint or two from Xfce & focus on making the panel, widgets, and backend GTK3-focused. Port it to Arch & Debian bases (as it now is), and be done with it! I'm sure he doesn't get much sleep. ;)

On your other topic...I just generally never recommend it--too much that can go wrong. But if you persist in that kind of lunacy, use a different username for each different DE. That will keep .config files & settings somewhat singular. Good luck.
