I don't know how their voting mechanism works in details, but the developer should have a veto right, because he is doing the work.
@Ste74: The panel looks like you can apply some changes to it now. Can you make it vertical, for example?

Yeah, panel on the left would be a deal braker for me, I like such a setup.

You know many programs, but you don't have a list of them in your head, here is one: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/List_of_applications

I don't like to see plank in the desktop, i think you should removed it.
Waiting to test the iso, keep up the good work. :)

Do you think a panel on the bottom and a dock on the left (where it could easily be removed by the user)  would be better?

My personal preference--based on the Solus Project's design principle is no dock at all. Why? Two reasons, both from the Budgie website:

Quote
Designed with the modern user in mind, it focuses on simplicity and elegance.

I like the simplicity part. And:

Also note that Budgie can now emulate the look and feel of the GNOME 2 desktop, optionally, via a setting in the panel preferences.

So the user already has some options built-in. The user can always add a dock of their own choosing post-installation. Maybe even a Budgie dock? ;)

Regards.

No dock at all, i prefer simple also. Budgie last time i checked have a panel. And the menu for launching apps, is prety and simple.
Thats just my opinion. :)

Hybrid solution with dock hidden at the left of screen ?
i see immage on solus forum .. most users use plank ..

That was my idea, too. The dock would be easy to remove there.

@Lt__Gruber, mandog: I don't use a dock either, but I'm aware of its aestetic qualities and popularity. I wouldn't waste the chance to win some user with it.

Yesterday after the Manaro Update it happened the same, login in automatic and i see only the mouse pointer but nothing else...
I switching to tty2 and text login, after i resolve this problem with AUR with budgie-desktop-git, it will replace the budgie-desktop from repo Community and after restart everything is ok...i thing this is a little bug with budgie-desktop and Gnome 3.18...

Ps i use budgie desktop every day on my laptop from the Budgie-Manjaro Rc2 and i have only this little problem, nothing else...everything is always smooth...

I remember that Pantheon had the issue that on first boot you needed to select the correct session in the login greeter.

The first thing is, Budgie is under very heavy development at this time. The AUR budgie desktop & git stuff is all beta and incomplete. You might want to keep up on Ikey's progress via Solus' website: https://solus-project.com/

Once Ikey get a Solus release under his belt hopefully his new stuff will be available for Arch users. Until then, what you got is all you get, unless you actually want to install SolusOS.

Regards.

That sounds like  surgery/operation I'd like.
Been waiting awhile for newer "bugless" Budgie iso
Like you've mentioned Solus still in beta stages & final Solus release has seen delays.

Upload in unstable repo.  ;)

So, either install on top of Manjaro NET w/Unstable repos, or install your RC & changes Stable repos to Unstable & update/upgrade. Is that correct?

Thanks, I probably will. May or may not redo to Stable--I run SolusOS in another partition. I like pacman a lot better than pisi, since I'm so used to it. Just a personal prejudice--nothing wrong with pisi. ;)

Thanks for interfacing with Ikey! :D

Hey, Ste74: Manjaro base, unstable repos, Budgie DE (only), GNOME packages, Mjro tools, network-manager, lightdm, lts-kernel, etc. Ps_mem = 291MB, Free -m = 250MB.

This is my new Budgie DE, thanks to Ikey Doherty (SolusOS), you & Manjaro. Thanks! :D

Well now budgie is in stable repo .. now can build a stable iso for this environment  ;)

Unused mate in my experience in linux  ::) but budgie environment is plus lighter than mate or equal ? Only curiosity  :P

It *feels* a bit lighter than MATE to me but I do not normally run MATE. I normally run GNOME and Budgie is way lighter. It is like MATE, but with GTK3, which is still *experimental* in MATE. Budgie replaces the shell in GNOME. Budgie may be a lightweight DE but I use it to run GNOME applications, and that is where it shines best so far.

It is still a bit rough at the moment--I wouldn't want it on a production machine yet--but it is a brand new DE so that is to be expected. I will probably return to GNOME shortly until Ikey adds a bit more polish to it. :)

Regards.

Ste74, I re-installed your Budgie since you upped it to Stable, and I'm glad. You had a couple of packages I did not that makes the interface feel much "smoother." I also found a couple of tricks...

Post-install & update, if the user also installs package group "gnome-shell" (total about 1.5 MB) you can then boot into GNOME and using Tweak Tool can: A) add minimize/maximize window buttons, B) tweak Nautilus settings--for instance, I like "open with 1-click" and C) other GNOME features like this in Lollypop and probably a few other GNOME applications that put a conf or pref settings in the GNOME top panel. When done, you can logout of GNOME, log back into Budgie and remove "gnome-shell." The settings changes you make will remain.

I also like adding "gnome-session properties" from AUR so I can adjust a few startup services/apps, but that's an individual preference.

Regards.

Now Budgie is working!! I could play around and configure it. Very nice effects, handy desktop. The menu is a bit peculiar.
It hanged at some point, but that happens to me too with Cinnamon. I guess is a GTK 3 related thing. Or maybe Python that is failing after the last two updates.
Anyway, I'm loving Budgie and looking forward to see the improvements to come.
Thanks!!!!  :D
