Title: KDE 4.10.0 hit our unstable repos
Post by: philm on 08. February 2013, 19:39:25
(http://www.h-online.com/imgs/43/9/5/6/7/7/1/Kde-logo-100.jpg-163b818ea5de2c7c.jpeg)KDE 4.10 was officially released 05.02.2013 as the latest bi-annual update to this popular open-source project with the Plasma desktop shell at its core.

Key features to KDE Software Compilation 4.10 include improved mobile device support, visual refinements with more of Plasma Workspaces being ported to Qt Quick / QML, improved usability / performance to many KDE Applications, and KDE Platform 4.10 opens up more APIs to Qt Quick.

Some other items worthy of shout-out about KDE 4.10 include Nepomuk improvements, support for menu buttons in the title bar, performance enhancements, and many other features that were brewed.

More details on the many changes to the KDE 4.10 desktop can be found over at KDE.org (http://kde.org/announcements/4.10/).

Report any issues back you might find ...

With 4.10 I have lost notifications except for Firefox which displays its own non kde style.

I didn't had time to test it myself yet. Might create a KDE testbuild soon ...

I had to manually add the Notifications widget to the panel before I could see the usual Notification icon in the system tray. After removing the added widget the notification icon remains, however I'm yet to see any notification pop-ups new or old (4.9 style). Not that important in the big scheme of things, but as I said elsewhere very disappointing in terms of polish so far...

Since upgrading to 4.10 I have experienced a delay of about 15sec before coming to a usable desktop.
To overcome this I have disabled kmix and installed veromix and now the desktop starts as it should without the delay.

My other preferred distro is Chakra that's also on my laptop.
I want to try Manjaro KDE to compare with it and eventually replace.

Hi Jack,
I highly recommended you do.
I too used Chakra but became tired of the bundle system and since I don't use too many non-kde app's, I find Manjaro (+AUR) a better fit.

Thanks for reply bra10n, me to uses some GTK apps and don't like the bundles so much even if they try to pass it off as a cool thing.
The biggest reason is anyway that i really love Manjaro, also Bumblebee seems don't work so well as on Manjaro, sometimes i ear the fan working hard with only Firefox running and i have to rebbot to fix tough everything is setted up as on Manjaro, i checked any of configs, also Arch work as Chakra, seems to me that Manjaro is a step ahead.

Do you suggest to wait for the upcoming release to try?

More on Notifications...
After several reboots? notifications for Firefox and locally copied files are again working.
However occasionally I need to clear the same notification twice as if it is somehow duplicated.

I'd wait until Manjaro 0.8.4 and download/install from there...

On my VM with unstable repos, ever since the 4.10 updates, Nepomuk has been crashing on a regular basis, often when I'm not doing anything on that "machine".

Have you run Nepomuk cleaner? I'm not sure if this will work for a VM (you may have to run it on each start), but this has reportedly solved sporadic activity / temp spikes on hard installs.

Thanks for that, I'd not heard of that tool before. Since running it, no nepomuk crashes in ~24 hours.

I'm interested to see if others who have retained kmix are experiencing this same delay. I haven't found any similar reports on the interwebs as yet...

Same here. Only the names are called 'unstable', but it is stable ;)

Thanks JackOM,
On that basis I decided to re-install Manjaro. The result is all my issues are resolved...
Gimp starts from a normal user account.
Notifications are working as expected.
Kmix starts without the 15 sec delay.

Now this is why I chose to use Manjaro. Well done Philm and others...
