Title: Discussion about Lxqt documentation
Post by: qanjaro on 21. July 2014, 14:08:00
dicktater and Esclapion,

There's no "registration" button in the Wiki pages and my forum name isn't accepted. May I ask you to read the attached file (.html and .wiki) and if useful put it in the Wiki?

Other souls are certainly welcome to read and criticize too.

Just thought it was interesting that Qt is getting more attention.
qt has a lot of advantages over gtk3. i do not want to start a flame war, but if i start to program an application nowadays, i would definitely use qt5 instead of gtk3.

it happens more and more that applications switch to qt5. the main reason driving this switch are the advantages of qt5 over gtk3 and unity 8 (the next default DE of ubuntu based on qt5).

in general, these are good news for lxqt and it shows a lot of potential for lxqt in the future...

@qanjaro:
how about including these list of additional programs as well?
https://github.com/Razor-qt/razor-qt/wiki/3rd-party-applications
http://qt-apps.org/

i like the warnings in the beginning. your wiki entry also gives good advice for non-newbie lxqt users. great job!

Thanks excalibur, I've already included that link. Any other area you think might be improved?

All that we say and will say is about a new subject, something like "lxqt documentation", I dont know for the title.  ::)

And may be separate subjects for things like ldm (that I don't know).

Your opinion ?

All right.

as i said, i think it is a great resource for non-newbie lxqt users.
the lxqt threads are becoming too long to read, so a wiki article is a great idea.

these are my ideas:
- write a few sentences about qt vs gtk/kde in general. what are the disadvantages of using qt4, qt5, gtk2, gtk3, kde4, kde5 all at the same time? what are the advantages of using as few toolkits at the same time as possible?
- write a little about using lxqt with openbox vs using lxqt with openbox and compton.
- maybe give some links for removing screen tearing with compton (if you do not know how to do it, i can write about it as well).
- give a link to the "octopi" wiki page for installing software in lxqt.
- (later when lxqt 0.9 or 1.0 has been released) write a wiki section about theming in lxqt. how can i change my theme in qt (and choose a matching gtk theme)? how can i create themes?
- we could also write a wiki section (or make a forum thread) about known bugs in lxqt

Thanks excalibur. Will think about them. If and when I'll be able to put it in the Wiki, you should certainly contribute. Even saying this embarrasses me as if anyone needs my permission for that.

Btw, and absolutely off-topic  C:-), moving an appli from the Menu to the taskbar works now.  ^-^

Updated with correct links and typography as well as an intro as to the (seudo)necessity of a Qt-only system. Is the first entry too political?

i have requested a wiki account a couple of hours ago.
i have not had a wiki account, because i was too lazy to create another (extra) account.

i do not think that i am as knowledgeable as esclapion or you, but i will definitely contribute when i see something missing.

p.s.: i have read the revise wiki article and like it much more than the first. some of the arguments for a qt-only system are quite funny!

great job (to the guy, who made this possible). this brings us (or rather the manjaro lxqt version) one step closer to a fully usable system!

And what is funny is that it has been solved by Paul Leuthier, the youngest dev of the lxqt team : 12 year old, and really.
