Title: [Statement] The future of Manjaro Linux
Post by: philm on 08. July 2014, 19:08:09
Hi community,

Manjaro started a couple of years ago as a hobby project and has quickly grown. The forum now has over 4560 posting members (and 7753 members in total), we have a wide array of community editions, and the number of downloads every week is truly impressive:

Edition   Updated   Downloads (weekly)
xfce   09/06/14   5301
kde   09/06/14   2281
openbox   09/06/14   1702
Cinnamon   21/06/14   725
LXQT   09/06/14   571
netinstall   09/06/14   544
PekWM   20/06/14   430
Enlightenment   09/06/14   263
MATE   10/06/14   257
Gnome   25/02/14   252
Netbook   22/02/14   214
Fluxbox   20/06/14   159
xfce-minimal   09/06/14   127
LXDE   24/02/14   81
Total   12907

and this is just from Sourceforge - there will be many more downloading from torrent!

As a testement to success of the Manjaro project so far, two other distributions use Manjaro as a base for their own releases: Sonar, a distribution targeting the needs of computer users who require assistive technologies, and Netrunner Rolling, a KDE-based distribution sponsored by Blue Systems (a company that also sponsors another well-known KDE-based distribution: Kubuntu!).

We're also looking forward to collaborating with other distributions on our newest operating system installer. You will already be familiar with Thus and how easy it makes getting Manjaro installed - with our new software project, Calamares, we will aim to create a "unified" installer, bringing together the good work of other distributions and helping everyone in the process!

However, none of this can happen without the community, whether in the forum, on IRC, or helping out on Github or Transifex. You are what makes Manjaro successful!

As some of you may have noticed there have been some recent changes to the Manjaro development team. We welcomed back a number of team members along with some who were brand new, and some team members have moved on.

As is always the case with open source software projects, and particularly those so geographically widespread (and Manjaro is particularly lucky in having representatives from every continent), circumstances can change.

The team wants to assure you, the community and users of Manjaro, that the core of the project is progressing exactly as before. No matter how the membership of the development team may change, the team is always committed to help make Manjaro the best distribution out there!

Kind regards,

The Manjaro Development & Support Team

You all can be proud on what you achieved in this relative short time.
I'm growing very fond of this piece of art, that Manjaro is.
Thanks, and I hope that it will last for a long time.

I really enjoy Manjaro and I'm glad to hear that it's still going strong.

I'll use this occasion to thank the team behind it all, both past and present members - your combined effort made Manjaro what it is today and thank you for that.

Good going guys. I hope Manjaro remains Manjaro as it is known today and does not become Gnome that tries to turn PCs into Tablets (Gnome 3.x) or Canonical that destroyed their beautiful distro with tons of bloatware.

@PingoDindo, the good thing about manjaro is the choice of desktops you can choose from.

Members who don't behaviour conform to the forum rules should be definitively banned. Their accounts should be blocked and deleted that they don't polluate anymore the threads.

I only hope Phil uses more discretion when making users MODs and members of the core team instead of the last few candidates that just let the whole of the community down with there childish immature behaviour.
No more to say than lets get back to what a forum is supposed to be a place to discus Manjaro and not be afraid to ask questions without certain members starting flame wars because they don't like what you are using.
Please Guys lets make this place how it used to be a nice place to visit.

GnomeHate.txt Seems too popular in here....
But then again, I think people should respect others opinions at something, I thought that's what Linux is, and windows is not  (re: Start menu and metro).
I agree about Ubuntu though, it sucks :)

Also I think it's one of Manjaro's power that it holds all the desktops and users can choose between them depending on their taste.
I still wish that gnome was  officially supported, but alas it's not.

I'm new, and the posts show that some drama might have happened between manjaro's team, and my English is not good enough to figure the  whole thing out, but what ever it was, I hope these kind of obstacles never destroy Manjaro and prevent it from going forward, strong.

My own personal opinion of matters like this is to just keep quiet, not feed the flame and let the moderators/administrators do their job.
Of course we should sound an alert if there are inappropriate content, password scams etc.

Most comments here and last time just do more harm than good, despite good intentions.
Just wish those leaving all the best and carry on.

Now, on a lighter note, isn't my comment a contradiction of terms?   ;)
Cheers, everyone. Lighten up.

I hope that Manjaro will be back where it belongs. We have been in the top ten of Distrowatch already and now have dropped a little. And i have looked at the figures for 0.8.9: from february 27th to the end of march we had a whopping 110.00k for the official flavours alone. More than 41k downloads in one week ! And even two months after 0.8.9 came out, in may, we still hat a solid 14k downloads per week. But then our numbers are still quite impressive: We have a solid 10k weekly downloads a week, let's hope it stays that way. We had a little over 70k downloads from june, 9th to today. So yes we dropped from 110k downloads in a little over a month to 70k downloads but that still is an impressive amount of downloads which shows that despite the problems there is still a huge userbase behind this distribution.

I think a lot of users coming to Manjaro is coming from spatry's camp and not distrowatch. And if I've understood right we've been held back  by DW 'cause of the pumping of numbers stuff. If that's right our "real place" is higher than what's showing. Which I'm pretty sure it is :)
Title: Re: [Statement] The future of Manjaro Linux
Post by: Verändert2.0 on 12. July 2014, 10:36:19
We aren't zeroed out by DW as of yet. You'll realize when that happens because then we really get zero hits. Nada. Niente.

On the other hand, moderating is time consuming, Afaik. I wouldn't be surprised if someone tried their hand at that thinking it to be like a day at the beach to eventually drop out, realising they have no time or can't be bothered to deal with trolls…

Manjaro is the 15th most popular in terms of downloads according to distrowatch.com. It was 18th about 3 days ago. I can picture it at no. 1 in a few months!

We were at no 6 a few months back :)
Personally I think we belong up there; 5-8, and remember that Manjaro is still in beta :)
Just wait for version 1.0 is all I say :)
Title: Re: [Statement] The future of Manjaro Linux
Post by: Verändert2.0 on 12. July 2014, 16:42:19
And this still has nothing to do with downloads. We have aroung 10k downloads per week. We had over 40k at the best times but we still have a lot of people who are obvióusly interested in Manjaro. It depends on when the last new version came out. After a new version, we usually rise up in DW. We didn't rise as much as before but it should be a matter of time until we get back in the top 10. We all can do something to make things work. At least say thanks from time to time to those people who bring Manjaro to you and those people who work hard to keep the forum a happy place.

Guys and Gals, stop worrying about Distrowatch "charts". Manjaro is a happy, healthy, thriving community. Lots of people are using it and loving it. As has been mentioned, say "thankyou" sometimes and, if you can, make a donation towards running the servers. If they stop running then your world will go dark. Support the cause! I will admit that I haven't donated yet because times have been tough, but they are a bit better now and I will be making a donation tomorrow because Manjaro makes my life a bit better. C'mon!  8)

I freaking love this OS and should anyone stop developing for it, I fear I would have to go to the dark side and buy myself a mac  :(
I love this community and I love the rolling release structure of updates.  I love how fast it is. I love how stable it is. I can go on.
Thank you for creating an awesome OS and a brilliant one at that.

A sure sign that Manjaro is becoming a little too successful for certain others to stomach and this isn't the first time I've seen this. Heh, like the current conversations about certain other distros eventually switching to systemd? :P

That particular one is getting rather entertaining.

After reading through this entire thread, I decided I would post my own 2 cents worth. :D

I have over the past 3 years tried a number of Linux distros.
And I have been annoyed off and on by pretty much all of them.  :o
BUT, I have found that during these past couple of months that I have been using Manjaro,
that I actually do enjoy using it. A lot.  8)
One of the KEY reasons is this forum. Not only do the forum members know what they are talking
about, but they are understanding and quite helpful, especially top a "newb" in the Arch-based world as I am.
I am finding that a rolling release system is much more to my liking, primarily because of the fact it is
in a relatively constant state of update. And with Manjaro it also adds to this mix a very decent amount of stability as well.
Installing from the rpos is relatively quick and painless. Installing from AUR, well that has gotten about a 80 to 85 percent rating from me as on several attempted installs the build either out and out failed, or it choked. But, the ones that went well, I found it quite "entertaining" to sit and watch the build process progressing (and having VERY serious nightmares what it would be like to have to all that "manually").  :o :o :o

Well, anyway, I am definitely pleased with Manjaro so far.
So, to the Dev Team and all those involved...

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK !!!!!

A huge thank you to all involved in Manjaro, looking foward to contributing more if my knowledge becomes good enough ...

The option to create a custom ISO through Manjaro-Tools is a godsend...  created a custom i3 USB stick with my standard choice of sofware, not small nearly 2.5 GB but allows peace of mind to use testing knowing any potential re-install will be quick and painless !!!!!

Hi,

thanks a lot for developing Manjaro, in my opinion it is a nice arch based distribution, easy to install and easy to administrate. Refering to other distributions I want to point out, that Manjaro is just another way to use GNU/Linux, for my needs, a good one. But developers of Antergos and siduction for example also do a good job, spending time to make free software useable for other people.

Kind regards,
  Holger

        Hello philm

I've got a great idea/suggestion for the Manjaro Team.
What I believe this Community Forum needs is one central ISO-downloads Page of latest compiled releases.
My main reasoning is that Manjaro has a pile of Community editions.
And these Distro-ISO's are all split up in Sourceforge too.

Something sorta like weekly builds history of new ISO-Distros.

This I believe will help everyone easily locate newer editions of their favorite desktop enviroments.

Best Community Ever
Thanks
Rocky-IV

To the Manjaro team: Thank You SO much for all that you have done! This is one beautiful, efficient and amazing OS. It totally blew me away from day 1.

I've been using Linux for three years now: Ubuntu --> openSUSE --> Mint --> Manjaro. I must say that it is easily the best distribution I've used and I'm really grateful for all the work the testers, developers and contributors do to make it possible. Manjaro was the first Linux distribution that made me realize that I don't need to dual boot Windows anymore and that Linux really can be a home for me.

I have been encouraging my friends to get try Manjaro and will look for ways to contribute myself.

Thanks again,
Groggle

My road here was: Ubuntu->Xubuntu->Kubuntu->Linux Mint Cinnamon (stayed there for a while, because it's awesome distro, but it suited me in about 90% so I got looking forward) then finally Manjaro KDE and it's 100% perfection of what I wanted to get from a desktop, when it comes to functionality and look.

As to Manjaro installers, I was installing manjaro many times, because I was testing something and for me Thus proven to be robust and efficient, it had  error only once, while Calamaris was a disaster, it crashed or errored out on me 4 on 5 times, mainly after choosing partitions. Besides, Thus is much better looking and better automatizing some things during install. At the moment I wish Thus to be main installer and Calamaris to go home... Also I miss functionality in installers that is present in ubuntu or ubuntu based distros, namely - ability to install automatically alongside of existing system by shrining its partition. So there is still work to do.

A heartfelt thank you to the manjaro team.
Because of Manjaro, the community, the excellent wiki and tutorials, I am more at ease with linux.
I have been using linux only since 2009 and will be for many more years to come.

Thanks for a great distribution. :)

Job well done is all I can say :). Been part of the Manjaro community on and off starting from Openbox 0.8.x. Since then it's only getting better and better, and can easily compete with the likes of Ubuntus!
