Title: NEW : ISOs Manjaro 0.8.10 Lxqt-Qt5 ready for testing !
Post by: Esclapion on 05. July 2014, 18:11:05
Hi all  :)

Abstract

These ISOs are the result of porting Lxqt from Qt4 to Qt5. They are formed from a binary repository (repolxqt-qt5) containing a snapshot of the development packages.

These packages are tested and made reliable regardless of the further development.

This repository will evolve as new packages will be tested, a downgrade will always be possible.

Lxqt is a desktop both simple, fast and lightweight. It is intended to replace Lxde somewhere between Openbox and Xfce.

For now, this port is not optimized with respect to the boot time and memory size. It is for the moment slightly larger (20 MB) between Qt4 and QT5 but QT5 is still very recent.

For now, the minimum memory size required to use Lxqt is 384 MB

VBox installed the 64-bit version uses 162 MB on startup.

64 bits, in a Vbox of 384 MB. Themes Menda and Manjaro-flat; icons Humanity-wise (thanks to Rudylorren), Infinality :

List of applications included

I took this ISO to test a bunch of applications QT who can replace their Gtk counterparts, so there's a bit too much.  ;) Thanks to the community for its help.  :D

Qt4 and Qt5

Gtk or else

I tested it on my xfce, and it don't work. I can obtain the layout of the disk, but if I do a right-click on a partition, it breaks.

No more maintained since a year also.  :-\

I can confirm. I could look at one disk and it would crash every time when I tried to look at another.  :'(

Looks good so far, just needs some tweaks to the theme setup.

Minor bug: system language is set to English (US) but QupZilla interface is French by default. ;) (changing it in Preferences does work though)

I'm interested by the tweaks. For qupzilla, I have got a lot of problems for the 1st start (I solved it with a little script), so I forgot to change, thx. ;)

thanks a lot for this release. it is definitely much better than the last!
there is even a manjaro logo as the start menu and a much better choice of default software.
especially, i like the qterminal dropdown menu.
i was surprised when i saw that i can move the panel to the left screen edge. finally, this works!

i have found some bugs:

in the start menu are 2 sub menus i want to talk about:
- system (or system tools) with programs such as: date and time, dconf editor, printer settings, manjaro settings, users and groups, about lxqt.
- "settings" with programs: lxqt configuration center, printer settings, screensaver, priviledge granting, network management.
in my opinion, all program names written in bold should get deleted. they are already in the lxqt configuration center. all program names in italic should get moved to "settings" (if this is possible), because they are settings.

in the start menu are 2 sub menus:
- system (or system tools or similar). it contains qterminal
- accessories (or extra software). it contains lxterminal
this separation is not really logical and can be confusing. (you cannot do anything about this)

when you search for "setting" in synapse and press the down arrow, you see multiple identical entries for "manjaro settings" (and other entries). this is strange. it is not an important bug.

i found other bugs, but they already existed in the last version (and the version before that version) and they are lxqt bugs. you cannot do anything about it.

p.s.: i will keep testing.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedbacks. :)  I don't use printer, so I add it only at the end, because it's big, and  only in the 64 bits ISO.

I masked a lot of things in the menu, but apparently not enough. I will simplify that more.

I ran it last year on my Manjaro KDE install, and it ran fine. I'm building it now on my Netrunner Rolling system, I'll report back what happens.

Well no crashes so far, it does create and remove partitions fine but It does have a issues with formatting them. I'll look into it further when I have more time.

Preliminary. It's not good. Did not install anything new. All updates up to date with installation.
But livecd seems okay; just the installed system.
System keeps crashing; when attempting some apps, desktop turns black, everything freezes.
So I keep on rebooting. Maybe I'll recheck video drivers.
Will feedback more later.

Now everything seems okay.
Recheck video, nonfree installed okay
But I did not do anything.

Very sorry for the (bad) noise.
Will alert more if I find anything.
Again sorry.
Good job. Thanks!

ps; I have to install leafpad. (no preinstalled editor?)

Brilliant and original, probably the only system having mpd (+Cantata) as the default audio player. Yet unfortunately cantata-qt seems to be abondoned as an AUR package. AUR packages, cantata-kde and cantata-svn, both have kde dependencies.

is there an easy way to edit the lxqt start menu?

i have tested the 64bit version more. i went through all the settings (which are much better arranged) and played with them. i noticed that a dark theme is missing (but i do not complain about that). it is great to be able to put the panel to the left screen edge.
i played around with a couple of virtual desktops and i like it a lot (changing virtual desktops can be almost as easy as with xfce).
i changed qupzilla's language to german.
i noticed some bugs within lxqt (e.g. in the "desktop settings" window or in pcmanfm-qt).
lxqt is really fast. this is already impressive (i know that lxqt is not optimized yet).

after a reboot i noticed i broke the autologin (it worked only 50% of the time). i do not know what caused it.

i was not able to create program shortcut on the desktop or the panel. i was not able to create a cusom starter icon in the panel. i am not sure, whether it is my fault or lxqt's.

overall, my first impression was correct: this release and lxqt in general has improved since the initial release!
i will still wait a little until i use lxqt as my primary  DE.

Check at /etc/sddm.conf if "Autouser=<autouser>" is correct.

For numlockx, you already have a task Numlock at the start that you can customize ;

Qupzilla seems to be more stable here, but also keepassx auto type doesn't work.
Chromium-bin (aur) is more stable and faster than with qt4. So it's useable again.
Because of the combination of chromium/ hangout and keepassx I switched back from qupzilla, which also is a good and lightning fast browser.

Nice look and feel. Much better than qt4 build.

Removeable media and volume control in the panel  :D

Mouse acceleration and dual screen settings can't be saved, but should be possible to set it directly to the config files.

Great work!!!

For the moment, it's not at the level of Lxde, but not far. The remaining will come, but slowly.

The structure can also have slightly changes. And they have to work on kwin and wayland.

Afaik,no. The porting is finished. But from qt4 to qt5, we lost a bit of boot speed and it needs a bit more RAM.

Maybe changes in the system of init can solve for the boot time. They are studying how to optimize it, now.

Mh, qupzilla seems to need a lot of more cpu than chrome?
Both have the same open tabs (gmail, google+, facebook and three forum pages. Top cpu usage from qupzilla was 134%. With qupzilla unused and minimized cpu usage 45+%.

Normal, when I think about it : it is designed to run on small configurations, with little RAM.

What's the result, of the RAM point of view ?

Thanks! Disabled Flash plugin (netscape api) and reload tabs ... cpu 4-7%! wow  :o

@Esclaption
RAM is ~ 4% with Qupzilla. Chrome with two additional tabs (manjaro forum) and background apps (Hangout, Gmail Notifier, Synology DownloadStation, ...) needs 8,3%.
So difference isn't so much. But Qupzilla seems to be faster during page load.

8,3% is two times more than 4%.  ;)

Of course  ;D
But with additional tabs, background apps and chrome extensions I expected more *g*
Without flash it's low on cpu and mem usage. I don't like flash... but sometimes I also have to use it  ::)

Esclapion,

1. mpc is a great convenience (if not mandatory!) for global keyboard shortcuts, so I would put it in the ISO if I were you.

2. Hiding dev submenu in Application Menu is user unfriendly! Can't see qtcreator. I believe there're many users needing qt dev apps. Besides, some other general purpose apps get there too (some cad apps for instance as far as I can remember).

Hi Qanjaro,

1) mpc can be good, but we already have a tool included in lxqt (lxqt-config-globalkeyshortcuts). They will do the same, no ?

2) oki oki oki. I can unhide it, but I tried to do a lxqt as simple as possible, and those mysterious qt tools are disturbing for a beginner. And I have 6 of them : 2 x 3. One set for Qt4, another for Qt5...

Esclapion, can't chage font size via lxqt-config, it's stuck at 11 pt. Removing .gtk things haven't helped either.

Besides, guess lxqt devs are aware of these though, unminimising from the panel doesn't work properly (requires multiple clicks, annoying); and pcmanfm loses bookmarks; and pcmanfm-qt annoying to type (as all other words with hypen)!!!

I can do it without problem. Try several things in Control center ? I don't remember if qtconfig has not also an effect

(edit)

What's the right size for an user ? I was in 12p before.

i use a 1920x1080 pixel display with a size of 18.4 inches.
even i think that all texts are a little too big (font size 11), too.

please make it a little smaller by default.
font size 9 or 10 sounds good.

Yes, I've got a 27" (1920 x 1080) and 11pt is a bit large. The real issue (here) is that I can't change it. System obeys gtkrc file, but not the lxqt-config. I've removed all gtk files and folders in Home, but no joy. I'll remove the ones in /root now as well and see if it makes any difference.

I have very bad sight, due to my preceeding professionnal life (radars).

Next time I produce an ISO, I will change that at the last moment for 10.  ;)

i use a 1920x1080 pixel display with a size of 18.4 inches.
1920x1080 pix @ 18.4" = 120 dpi

Yes, I've got a 27" (1920 x 1080) and 11pt is a bit large.
1920x1080 pix @ 27" = ~82 dpi

My main computer is a 11.6" ultrabook at 1366x768 pixels (135 dpi) : I configure all my systems with 10pt default fonts (and I use it daily 4 to 12 hours).

I was also unable to change the LXQT default font size and felt a bit frustrated with a 11pt font loosing screen space.

Most of people have 15-17" screens, or 24". I have a 22" that I look at 60-85cm.

You have a main control here :

I verified, and it works.

In Pcmanfm, you have also a lot, and you can configure each tool separately. No global zoom is available, OK, but..

Strange, for the root apps the font size is small (possibly 9pt) and it can't be changed either.

if i change the font size (like esclapion described it in the screen shot), nothing happens. even after a reboot, the font size has not changed.

something else: esclapion, can you include these wallpapers in the next iso release?

if you think the wallpapers are too big (over 1MB), then convert them to jpeg (90% quality), this will make them smaller than 400kB.

Esclapion, before installing oxygen icons there were missing icons of some qt apps I've installed. Could it be that oxygen is a more complete icon theme especially if one has qt apps even the non-familiar ones? Oxygen must have a coloured (green etc.) version too.

ok.
i have attached 3 lxqt wallpapers, which i have made much smaller (200-300kB each) and i have changed it to green (unfortunately, i could not change the shadows as well - they look a little blue-ish when you look really closely).

if you do not like these wallpapers very much, just put them in the image as secondary wallpapers...

Added the 3rd (green), but now I close the folder background.  ;D

There are 3 sets really complete of icons available : faenza (or faience), humanity-wise, oxygen.

We are neither xfce-like nor kde-like. I did a try in the past with the green oxygen, but it was for gtk2, and not worked right (I dont remember exactly why).

It's very complicate for me to change it. So, for the moment, I will stay with humanity-wise, also if I dont like a lot their green.

1) After updating some days ago mouse acceleration is saved! But have to change it again to get it working  :P
2) Dual screen settings not saved. Have to redo after reboot
3) KeepassX / KeepassX2 auto type still doesn't work (tested different global shortcuts, right click -> perform auto-type inside keepassx works fine)
4) Qupzilla works better (manjaro.org dropdown menu works!!!  8), but some nice features missing (change tab from window A to B, right click & copy email address instead of copy mailto-link)
5) Chrome background apps (notifications, hangout extension, ...) works fine! But some sites opend with Chrome push cpu up near to 100%! -> just use Qupzilla  ;D
6) Moved panel to top. Show clock / date one below the other. Date is hidden because it's to high. Breaks one or two updates before? After first install lxqt (qt5) it fits the bar.

Manjaro LXQT looks more and more like a full featured and comfortable desktop! Great work done, Esclapion! I really like it!

"Leave" should also be placed into the panel for quick access "Leave -> Shutdown" instead of "Menu -> Leave -> Shutdown".
Usually I use "Synapse shortcut -> poweroff" as quick solution *g*

i use a dedicated poweroff and reboot button on my panel. i could easily create them in xfce and kde, but i have not managed it in lxqt.

this (and other minor annoyances) keep me from using manjaro lxqt as my main OS. but - as esclapion has mentioned - the developers of lxqt work on a lot of bug fixes and cool stuff (like using kwin in lxqt and wayland support).

thx for your test and sharing the results with us!

Hmm, you will have a special appli to do that. But the system Menu -> Leave -> Shutdown exists in most DEs.

An separate application (lxqt-power-git) did that in the past, but the dev said that having a special package for it was not necessary.

In all case, it seems me easy to solve ?

I like it and use it daily ;)

"Leave" Menu in panel should be possible, but haven't take a look at it.

Keepassx auto type, mouse acceleration and dual screen config is annoying, but maybe it will work in the future.

*UPDATE*
Qupzilla has some problems with gmail, gcalendar and especially gdocs. But also Chromium have some problems with the latest version (gtasks crashes...)

Mouse speed / acceleration is present at configuration ("keyboard and mouse"), but doesn't work (value is saved, but not loaded after reboot). So it should be fixed instead of use a additional (qt4) software I think.

Looks like the Install issue is with the CLI Installer not wanting to Format the Partitions.
If you use Gparted to Format the Partion and then use the CLI installer to mount the partitons, it will install the ISO.
I've tested this on two seperate ISO's relased over the last week.  Xfce-minimal-0.8.11 and lxqt-qt5-0.8.10B.

I'm testing your iso 64x, and IMHO:

- Too much lib32 libraries, maybe it's a manjaro thing ?

- Qasmixer & pavucontrol : maybe you have to choose to keep just one, i vote for qasmixer and the removal of pulseaudio

- Qmmp & cantata: same thing, i vote qmmp or clementine, cantata is for more advanced users who can install it easiely after

No, but each time you use a 32 bits application, you get some.

Qasmixer is there to resolve a problem with the volume applet, it will disappear. For pulseaudio, I can't have sound without.

True. But screenshoots can't select an area, I think.

qmmp causes a problem with Chromium : so, nice, but probably to remove. I search a very light player, cantata is too complicate for casual user. I don't know if I get Cantata or not, only few users need a music "manager". Deadbeef-qt is on my list of possible (seems have problems with flac).

Cantata is surely the king of audio players, but putting DeadBeef would also inform users of its Qt-ability, beside giving users not wanting to deal with mpd a more modest yet audiophile player.

For those ultra-minimalists (not even wanting to install an additional app, cmus, for instance), https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/np1-mps-git/ (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/np1-mps-git/) may be used in console with either mplayer or mpv as backend.

For silicon, nice, but seems ineffective. 7 Mo installed instead of 2 Mo.

Do we really need a burning application ?

IMHO cantata+mpd are for a diehard users that install arch from scratch. Not for users that want a ready-to-use distribution like this one.  :P

BTW, can we open a file localy in cantata ? i mean in pcmanfm/open with/cantata ?

Last time I've checked I'm unable to install arch from scratch (and have no wish to do it) but still do use mpd+ncmpcpp/cantata. It's not that hard to set up and is great.
Still, I'd agree that for first timers deadbeef is way easier (and still great).
Cheers,

IMHO, a usb "burning" application, a text editor, a partition application (e.g. gparted) and an internet browser are the basic programs a live cd needs.
i do not think lxqt needs a burning application.

how do other people think about it?

i do not think lxqt (ISO) needs a burning application.

The idea of using "Program Installers" is more appropriate for ISO's, keeping things light and easy to install.
Example, if your doing another Distro Hopping Video, you click Menu > Office > and see "libreoffice-installer", and comment - if you want it, install it.

We have only Turbulence, for the moment, and I think to suppress it. We really need a software manager.

YES - using a Software Manager based on Categories would give people the ability to install programs of their choice, removing all the guess-work.

Until a software manager is developed, a link (or launcher) to a wiki page for many of the Qt apps discussed in these threads would be nice for new users and the wiki.

Do you have a target date for manjaro-lxqt-qt5-0.8.10D or even plan for another release before manjaro-0.8.11?

Not really. High probably a new one during this month. It depends also of the date of the 0.8.11 Manjaro and of the 0.8 Lxqt (or something so, I wait for an announcement).

For the moment, I work slowly on a 32 bits CD Size (or almost  ;)), not bad at all. I suppress a lot of things to be as light and simple as possible.

It's an endless work.  ;D

it would be nice to have an updated lxqt release for the "official" manjaro .8.10 community edition.
the current manjaro .8.10 community edition is still qt4 based...

a month ago, the lxqt team already talked about lxqt 0.8: http://blog.lxde.org/?p=1134

I asked Rob by E-mail today for pushing the current folder from development area to community. Wait & see.

The top would be an announcement in the Manjaro Blog.  ^-^

Comparing => LxQt / i3 / OpenRC is silky smooth and 'seems' graphically and sound quality superior to Xfce / i3 / OpenRC.

so, 152MB. But will decrease.

Is there a reason your not using otter-browser-git? Since it unlock Tools>Content Blocking... I don't know why otter-browser does not come that way by default.
By the way. This is awesome update iso!!!

otter-browser-git -> 9 votes -> last maintained 2014-07-04 05:57 -> Version 0.9.01

So, the choice is simple for me. I target stability and I choose otter-browser.  :)

Hey Esclapion,

Thanks for the excellent and needed work making a LXqt spin for Manjaro. Will there be an updated 64-bit version coming out soon?
I think lxqt has a lot of potential with all of the configurability of kde without the bloat, and when you add openbox you get the best thing
since peanut butter and jelly, or gin and pineapple juice.

Gin and pineapple juice? mmm... Aren't you a pirate? I would think rum and pineapple would be preferred by a swashbuckler.

I like rum and ginger ale with a little citrus and/or pineapple! Ish tashe gud! :) When I went to Tobago, all I drank were rum punch cocktails. Never knew what exactly diluted the rum. I'm sure it differed from bar to bar. Never cared.  ;D

Talked my way out of being thrown in the pokey on my first full day day that might have lasted the duration of my visit. After an all-nighter first night, rolling down the street in the driver's seat with nine people on board a plastic-bodied four-seater rental that resembled a bathtub on wheels, was pulled over for no seat belt.  C:-) Plenty of rum. Just no seat belt. ;D

Both are full QT5, yes. Only the 0.8.11 is more recent than 0.8.10.  ;)

I will soon produce a new one (or set of 32 and 64 bits).

lxqt itself is full lxqt5 at 100%. Some other applications are already in qt4, but less every day.
