Title: [poll] Which Music Player for Lxqt ?
Post by: Esclapion on 14. June 2014, 13:02:44
Hi all,  :)

I don't use one, so I'm stuck for the choice. Does Lxqt really need one, or only a media player ?

It only must be in Qt and independent of Kde. I find none in Qt5.

For the moment, I have only no idea of selection criteria, and there are a lot.  :-\

Thanks by advance for your help.

Clementine-qt

Not available ? I have a clementine, a clementine-git, ...

I think the need for a unique music player will depend on the choice of video/media player. Personally, I prefer to keep things separate, but not everyone does.

By the way, I think lmms is for music production as opposed to being a music player.

true, I used to use the clementine-qt package that seems to have been now removed. That was before I knew that clementine is QT anyway :D

Cantata works OOTB, but clementine :

(edit)

Solved by reinstalling gstreamer's and reboot.

So, you think none ?
correct.
but this is from a user's perspective, who does not listen to music often and mostly via streaming. a music player just does not have any priority for me. in fact, i would probably uninstall it.

this is just my humble opinion. if more people want to have a music player installed,  please install one.

This true, it's not a player.

I despise clementine so I would say cantata.

Hi Esclapion, for me "Clementine is a good choice".
because it is lightweight and powerful

Re, Cantata in VBox :

Cantata is QT5 and LxQT will also be, and Qupzilla-QT5 makes general a good working system, not differences in QT

Please, don't be silly!!! Cantata for sure, by far. The most functional (but minimalist too if you like) real audiophile player with gapless playback + bit-perfect output, with excellent playlist and library management, global keyboard shortcuts via mpc, lightweight etc. etc. etc.

I can't bring Cantata to work in VBox  (a problem of VBoxvideo driver).

More, it's very difficult to use, and Clementine is a lot more easy to use. My impress for now.

Cantata (by the way, we're talking about the Qt version here) is very easy and logical here like (a better) iTunes + other minimalist players, but if you've got issues with configuring MPD?...

It works well in the host, but need a vboxvideo driver in VBox, and I can't furnish him.

For the moment, I'm stuck, because all users who will try this in VBox will say that it doesn't work.

For qt-based players, my choose is Clementine.
Also, Yarock could be good.

My favourite music player for Linux is Guayadeque, damn good, but gtk2 ony.

Hmm; I did again ( ;D) some tries with Cantata : seems lighter (2 times at least), a bit more functionnalies, and Qt5-based.

Just "a bit more functionality"?!! Come on Esclapion, you're hurting my feelings! Please use and play with it a little more and you'll see the light!! Cantata+MPD is the best kept secret of audio playback, just because MPD was a bit confusing to configure before (or in some non-Arch based distros).

Though one can use Cantata in minimal mode like (a much better) Clementine or Audacious (itself seemingly soon to be Qt based: http://redmine.audacious-media-player.org/boards/1/topics/1269), it has an unequal album grid view sorted by albumartist tag instead of artist and album mode view in playlist and playque panes. Without the former a music player is not really functional, because one cannot remember all his/her albums/tracks, so needs a visual clue to browse and find an album or track, more so with classical music where album titles are rarely meaningful. Album mode view in playlists where albums are grouped, not shown as useless track lists is another fine convenience, because if you've got more than 100 albums you might need playlists containing whole albums as well as only songs. And all those and playlist/playques are managed very logically, easily.

Besides, all those are gstreamer based apps and gstreamer's gapless capability is (or hopefully was) shaky. There are many gapless albums and those gaps are really gaps in the middle of the music in those albums which are simply unacceptable.

Cantata can even extract audio using paranoia, edit tags, (as a true audiophile player) has bit perfect output etc. and all those with minimal resource consumption.

EDIT: Well, you've already seen the light without my rant here!

Hello,
about cantata, any possibility to get the whole library as an always up-to-date playlist ? i had a try but didn't find a clue. i just like listening my whole music database with a big shuffle  ;D
i'm used to Gmusicbrowser which is written in Perl and uses Mplayer as playing engine but with the latest perl package update, it is broken and i cannot use it until a future fix.
i also had a try on Clementine, it could do the job but i see a higher CPU load than what i got with gmusibrowser or what i saw trying cantata

I was looking for that too. Frome what I've found so far, you can add multiple albums to a new playlist and then use random play against that list.

1. On the Artists or Folders tab select the first artist/album in the list
2. Press <shift> and select the last artist/album
3. Right click anywhere in the selected list and choose add to new playlist
4. Give the list a name
5. In the playlist tab right click the new list and choose Add to play queue
6. Select random play button at bottom and select play...

There may be a way using dynamic playlist rules but it doesn't seem to like wild cards

I also found a problem when creating playlists using the aforementioned method where it seems to break when cue sheets are present.

Code: [Select]
You cannot add parts of a cue sheet to a playlist! (cue:///Pink Floyd/Japanese Remasters/1988 -...
I guess that needs to be reported as a bug.

hi Salinko,

indeed it could do the trick but i didn't find a way to get a dynamic playlist, or at least the possibility to refresh the playlist so that it reflects the music library contents (new or removed albums).

I'm afraid I haven't found a better way, as yet. Unfortunately, Cantata seems really quite obtuse in some respects.
