[SOLVED] Sound stopped working .
« on: 27. April 2016, 06:29:15 »
I am having a little sound problem. Sorry for the long post I have been working on this for a few days now with no success.

System:    4.4.6-1-MANJARO x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.3.0) Desktop: Xfce 4.12.3 (Gtk 2.24.28)
           Distro: ManjaroLinux 15.12 Capella
Machine:   System: Dell product: Inspiron 3847

Audio:     Card-1 Intel 8 Series/C220 Series High Definition Audio Controller
           driver: snd_hda_intel bus-ID: 00:1b.0
Card-2 Intel Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor HD Audio Controller
           driver: snd_hda_intel bus-ID: 00:03.0
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture v: k4.4.6-1-MANJARO

Every thing used to work. A few days ago I found that I could not play a cd or play backup of music in my music directory. I am not sure when this started. I play youtube and other streams daily.
Both VLC and guayadeque seemed to be playing but no sound.
As of yesterday speaker-test -c2 -t wav and you tube both worked. I must have screwed that up last night. Both do not play now.
I did use
Code: [Select]
./unmute_all.shfrom: http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/sound/sound_troubleshooting.htm see below.

When I run alsamixer > F6 I have these 2 choices.
0  HDA Intel HDMI
1  HDA Intel PCH
no difference whichever I choose, no sound.

I have the same output as this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=211863
Thread was not answered.

Code: [Select]
[kmartin@Jane ~]$ pulseaudio --system
N: [pulseaudio] main.c: System mode refused for non-root user. Only starting the D-Bus server lookup service.
E: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running.
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.
[kmartin@Jane ~]$ sudo pulseaudio --system

gstreamer missing a plugin was messaged when I ran guayadeque.
I found this: http://pantuts.com/2014/11/01/gstreamer-manjaro-arch-add-missing-plugins/
After running:
Code: [Select]
sudo pacman -S --needed --noconfirm gst-plugins-bad gst-plugins-base gstreamer gstreamer0.10 gstreamer0.10-bad gstreamer0.10-bad-plugins
 gstreamer0.10-base-plugins gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-good gstreamer0.10-good-plugins gstreamer0.10-python gstreamer0.10-ugly gstreamer0.10-ugly-plugins  phonon-qt4-gstreamer

3 new packages were installed: [2016-04-25 23:21] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman -S --needed --noconfirm gst-plugins-bad gst-plugins-base gstreamer gstreamer0.10 gstreamer0.10-bad

[2016-04-25 23:21] [ALPM] transaction completed

The gstreamer missing plug-in notification from guayadeque went away, but no sound.

This morning no sound, so I removed the 3 packages.

[2016-04-26 08:26] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman -Rs gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-python phonon-qt4-gstreamer'

[2016-04-26 08:26] [ALPM] removed gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg (0.10.13-2)
[2016-04-26 08:26] [ALPM] transaction completed

rebooted, no sound. The gstreamer missing plug-in notification from guayadeque is back.
Should I try to uninstall everything back through manjaro-alsa?

Code: [Select]
sudo pacman -Rnss manjaro-alsa guayadeque vlc pulsaudio
Anything else?  I hope this makes sence and one of you good folks has a better idea???

Thanks for your time...

Did you open the pulseaudio volume control (pavucontrol) while attempting to play sound and check that the apps are on the correct output, etc.

Thanks for the reply Rob. If you mean menu>multimedia>Pulseaudio volume control yes. It shows a flashing sound bar like it is playing. When I try to change the sound card in alsamixer (F6) to HDA Intel PCH the choice does not seam to persist. When I go back into alsamixer (F6) default and a single control is shown. If I remember corectly I used to have more controls as in the 2 choice, HDA Intel PCH.

Forget alsamixer for now, you should avoid using it when pulseaudio is present. Start VLC playing something, then open pavucontrol and on the Playback tab set VLC's output to whatever sound device you want. Does this work to get you sound?

If yes, go back to the Output Devices tab and set whatever device you want as default as the fallback. (That's the right-most button for each device.) In your screenshot it appears you currently have your HDMI output set as fallback device, if this isn't what you want, click the "Set as fallback" button (again that's the right-most button, the circle with the tick in it, next to the red padlock button) on the device you do want as default.

Yes, I have sound, speaker-test -c2 -t wav, YouTube, HDD library. The CD almost works. Has trouble mounting. VLC throws this

Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'cdda:///run/user/1000/gvfs/cdda%3Ahost%3Dsr0'. Check the log for details.

 What's

MLR
When i go to
Code: [Select]
/run/user/1000/gvfs/cdda:host=sr0/ I find the tracks listed and clicking one eventually (maybe 30 sec.) plays.

Thanks once again.
EDIT:
Got it: https://wiki.videolan.org/Media_resource_locator/

Alls good thanks Rob ;)
