I did not use AUR for Dropbox and have never used pip, hardly know what it is.

Fair enough.
Code: [Select]
pkill dropbox, remove two directories from your home
Code: [Select]
.dropbox
.dropbox-dist
start dropbox again.

And while we're at it, tell us how much space do you have left in your dropbox account ? i understand there is a storage limit, make sure you are not exceeding it.

dropbox started and the process is running :) but the applet icon will not appear so a reboot is the next step.  My dropbox account is for 1TB of data and I'm only using 6GB
modify: icon not appearing after reboot.

applet icon not appearing is a common problem. You just have to delay the dropbox startup by 30 seconds when you login. Open terminal and run
Code: [Select]
nano .config/autostart/dropbox.desktop and replace the Exec entry as shown
Code: [Select]
Exec=sh -c "sleep 30s && dropbox" save and exit. Then run
Code: [Select]
chmod -w .config/autostart/dropbox.desktop to prevent dropbox from reverting your changes.

Is this a Dropbox problem now that the process is running?  Isn't this something that has more to do with cinnamon?  And thank you very much for all the help it has been fun to learn how the system works.

It's a dropbox specific issue, happens in other DE-s too. I guess it starts too early before systray applets activate.

should I put a 60 sec delay on dropbox then?

And just to be sure it's not anything else in the config file?

Looks good to me. How much delay do you need ? It's up to you, reduce or increase it the way you see fit. Do note that icon may not show up always, it's a "more probability" type of solution. Dropbox isn;t exactly a perfect linux-native software. If you see no icon, pkill and start dropbox again.
