Edit Package Build - ?
« on: 26. March 2016, 16:23:08 »
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but when doing updates from a notification in the Update Manager, the first question I get is asking if I want to Edit the Package Build. I notice Yes is the default, but I'm not sure what it means or what I should choose.

If there is a page someone knows of that explains this, I'd be grateful for pointing me in that direction.
Thank you to the Manjaro developers and testers - your work is appreciated.

If there is a page someone knows of that explains this, I'd be grateful for pointing me in that direction.

This is for AUR packages, only. Read the notes, if any, that precedes the edit function. There may be information you need to know about. Sometimes--but rarely--a URL or CPU (i686, x86_64) or similar edit may be needed. Sometimes--again, rarely--the package build/install function is broken, and a poster may give info on how to successfully complete the install.

Have you got AUR support enabled as I don't get asked that question and it's not enabled in my "Update Manager"

The option is being presented so you can alter anything (if you know what you're doing) - I have no clue so I just press upgrade and trust the clever bods know what they are doing :) So far I have not fallen foul of anything but Like I said my AUR is not enabled.

Doesn't specifically answer your question but might give you an idea as to why it's happening. Hopefully a guru will answer soon.

This is right , when you want install a aur pkg you can find it in aur page .. example

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/inkscape-gtk3-bzr/

at the bottom of page you can see the comment of user , if the pkg is broken and maintainer not correct the pkgbuild you can edit the pkgbuild itself to correct ..

Another case is if you are security paranoic  ::)  you can see the pkgbuild to find the source and other info  :)

In the past this option is disable in pacman and octopi (?) but this solution was bad , the user  could think that : aur is part of Manjaro but aur is not repo Manjaro  ;)

Thank you for all the replies and help.

I take it then, in most cases, unless I see notes applicable to my situation, to choose No to editing, and continue with the build.

The specific case that this came up was with FreeFileSync, which I did find in the AUR, as it didn't come up in the standard repositories.

c00ter: I knew about the first two links, but the last one I had not seen before, and quite helpful to me as a person who is more used to the Mint (Ubuntu/Debian) commands. Thank you.

You are very welcome. It was worth-its-weight-in-gold when I moved over from Debian a few years ago. It comes of course, via the ArchWiki, which holds the answer to life, the Universe, and everything. ;)

Have fun!

Actually, no. You shouldn't implicitly trust any package on the AUR, and so should read the PKGBUILD and Install files to make sure they won't trash your system.

In reality few people will do this when using a wrapper like yaourt, but best practice and all that...

So choose Yes to the edit, and that will bring up information to read?

yes it will show you the content of the PKGBUILD and offer you possibility to modify it before to use it to install the software.
but you can also see the content and all useful information on the AUR page of the package.
the comment of user done on the AUR page are given on screen before or after this question, I'm not sure right now exactly when.
