trouble changing grub background
« on: 23. March 2016, 08:22:43 »
Can someone please help me customize my grub background. Grub themes work. But setting a different background fails for me every time. Some things I have already tried are:

I've uncommented GRUB_BACKGROUND="/usr/share/grub/background.png" and verified the path (I made sure the GRUB_THEME was commented out)
I've set 777 permissions on the image file and set the owner and group to root, I also set owner and group to my user account and the "users" group with 777 permissions
I've kept the name of the new image file the same, then I tried changing it
I've used .jpg with all the grub documented constraints, I also tried .png files and multiple dimensions of .png & .jpg files
I've updated grub every time, I tried using grub-mkconfig
I've crossed my fingers and done a bunch of other stuff too... but no cigar

Any help is appreciated.

Maybe my luks-crypt is getting in the way?

Yep.

Show us the output of update-grub command and your /etc/default/grub contents. It don't matter what resolution of jpg/png you pick. As long as there is no 'blank space' in filename/file path you're good to go. It is a good practice to just copy your image file to /boot/grub directory. You need only +r access for the file. Run "ls -l /path/to/file" to confirm.

Here you go!

BTW
I never had any blank spaces in my file name or path &

I totally tried placing my image in /boot/grub after reading up on separate boot partitions, didn't work. I referenced the image perfectly in my grub file each time too.

That's why I've been puzzled  :o

I've uncommented GRUB_BACKGROUND="/usr/share/grub/background.png" and verified the path (I made sure the GRUB_THEME was commented out)

Evidence clearly suggests otherwise. Your grub.txt file says
Code: [Select]
# Uncomment one of them for the gfx desired, a image background or a gfxtheme
#GRUB_BACKGROUND="/usr/share/grub/background.png"
Please make appropriate changes and do update-grub. Don't waste our time  >:(

I'm sorry, I did not revert to an uncommented grub_background setup because I've already tried that and it didn't work.

I was hoping you would see something else or suggest an untried approach.

I understand where you're coming from though youngster, if we're going to troubleshoot this right we need unequivocal accuracy & methodology.

So I configured everything again and rebooted. Same results. I've uploaded new attachments of the information you requested.  ;) Smile

Do not comment out theme.
Go to theme.txt  within theme and change background pathway to desired background.

update-grub says
Code: [Select]
Found background: /boot/grub/background.png so it's all good.
That leaves the encryption part. If you can squeeze out around 500mb space for a separate unencrypted /boot partition then you can confirm. If you need help with that do tell (changes can also be reverted) because it's quite simple to do, but hard to explain.
Although you have 'cryptdevice' entry in your grub file, it activates only after you start the booting process. That's when your partitions get "unlocked". Maybe that's why image can't be accessed in grub menu itself. Wild speculation :)

I understand where you're coming from though youngster, if we're going to troubleshoot this right we need unequivocal accuracy & methodology.
Not coming from anywhere mate. It's the same rule everywhere - You got to give us exact info straight up, not leave us guessing what you "may have done or intend to do".

grub background changed.

what worked? what has always worked: putting my background file in /boot/grub, editing my grub file, then running update-grub

what didn't work: creating an all black logo background with transparency while GRUB_COLOR_NORMAL was set to "light-gray/black"

guess what you see when you put a black logo on a black background? that's right. you don't see anything.

logical design flaw, i've already laughed @ & w/myself & learned a whole lot about grub in the process.

interesting... you can be technically right... but relationally wrong... and until you realise it... nothing will work.

fortunately the solution was much less complex than what this was turning into, it always is.

now, how can I change the theme for the decryption stage @ boot?

I'd like to:

1. change the logos or do away with them and just have a background

2. show no bullets or asterisks when typing in my luks password (just like @ the terminal)

this wiki page was super helpful in assisting me with the last 2 questions I asked in my previous post:
