USB Stick read-only (nemo problem)
« on: 11. March 2016, 22:23:36 »
Hi, nemo is giving me this error since I formatted my usb stick (using the gnome disks utility), it had the last cinnamon iso (dd method).

I've been reading and it seems is a nemo problem but the issues are almost 2 years old so I think it must've been fixed by now.

I already tried formatting it again, changing the mount options: auto and user as suggested in here.

Is there anything else I can try? Thanks.

EDIT: It also happened with another stick and with my external hard drive.

I had this same problem in Mint Cinnamon. It seems to be a Cinnamon issue from what I read at the time trying to find the solution.

The solution that worked for me in Mint was:

sudo chmod 777 /media/USERNAME

And put your username in where it says "USERNAME"

What I don't know, if that command is right for an Arch based Linux. If not, maybe someone here could translate it.

Here is a Mint forum thread on it - the solution above is on page 2:

Thank you to the Manjaro developers and testers - your work is appreciated.

GNOME Disk Utility is fine for reformatting an already formatted USB stick, especially FAT32, I've found.

But a real partitioning program such as GParted or KDE Partition Manager is probably what is needed in this case.

since I formatted my usb stick

What filesystem did you use when you formatted it?

If it's anything other than FAT/NTFS, only the root user has read-write to the drive root by default.

if you used DD it may need the partition table changed back to msdos using gparted its under the tab devices

Particularly this. I've seen a lot of users throw away perfectly good USB sticks for the lack of doing this. Good call, mandog. :D

If it's anything other than FAT/NTFS, only the root user has read-write to the drive root by default.

I used the MBR / DOS option to clean the partitions and then FAT (32 bits), as always.

But that wasn't the problem, I downgraded nemo and nothing, then I upgraded it again and it worked... Maybe a bad/old config triggered it cause it was the same day the new nemo version came out.

Install mintstick from the AUR and find peace in the world of formatting usb sticks & writing disk images.

If you use gnome-disk-utility, you have two formatting options. I have never had it fail. It is a front end to 'dd'.
