Green Screen/Kernel Panic after first login
« on: 02. January 2016, 15:37:50 »
Hullo mates! I've got a wee problem I was hoping you could help me on.
I've heard good things about Manjaro, so I've decided to give it a whirl. Let me say that I have been very impressed with it! I even found that your setup of KDE is appealing, while I've hated KDE in every other distro I've tried it on--Debian, Fedora, and Mint.

Anyhow, after I install Manjaro, login once, and then reboot, I get either a kernel panic, or the bootup freezes into a green screen that will eventually change colours--yellow, blue, purple... This occurs on every Manjaro flavour I've tried--Xfce, KDE, and MATE.
I don't have a picture but if needed I can post one.

My system specs (from LMDE Betsy) are:

On more thing: On the KDE trial, I also installed the 3.18 kernel and the latest rc kernel--I believe it was 4.4rc. Neither of these behaved any differently from the stock kernel.
I've also found that regular Arch gets cranky when it doesn't have control of Grub, so for my last installation of Manjaro I gave control of Grub to it just in case. The same green screen occurs regardless.

Thanks!

Would you like to try to add nomodeset kernel parameter to the Grub entry?

I should have done that shouldn't I!?! ;D IIRC, though, isn't that more for Nvidia graphics?
It's been so long since I've dealt with kernels that I've gotten kinda rusty. Let me try it and post back.

Well, it worked--somewhat:
Try 1: I didn't get a green screen, however it froze for a few minutes with the message
Code: [Select]

plymouthd: could not start boot splash: No such file or directory

I was able to get into console and try "startx" myself. It exited and said to check /var/lob/Xorg.0.log:

Try 2: Since I was warned about the splash screen, I removed the splash line from the boot arguments, so "linux ..... quiet nomodoset" while previously it was "linux .... quiet splash nomodoset". Green screen returned.

Try 3: Went back to the previous config of "linux ..... quiet splasy nomodoset". Green screen again.

Well, nomodeset is a general parameter. You could try with modprobe.blacklist=atifb or modprobe.blacklist=radeonfb.
Use a search engine with your GPU model + Arch.

Yeah, I've been poking around in Grub boot parameters to no avail. :(

I did search for my graphics card, which is a AMD/ATI RS690M or a Radeon Xpress 1200/1250/1270--I'm not sure exactly which is applicable. ::)
Code: [Select]
fred@aussie! ~ $ lspci | grep -i --color 'vga'
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RS690M [Radeon Xpress 1200/1250/1270]
No real luck yet.

It did boot once, so I installed every single kernel and play around with the graphics card. Turns out that kernels 3.10-3.16 would boot consistently, but with blown-up graphics, i.e. everything was 1.5 bigger than I remembered. Not sure exactly what I did there, but next time I'm doing one thing at a time! ;)

What's really strange is that LMDE Betsy and Kali are all booting fine on this machine--4.2 kernel for Betsy and I don't remember which for Kali. I did have some trouble with Kali initially (gdm3 doesn't get along with my graphics card) but that was fixed by using LightDM. AFAIK Manjaro uses LightDM, so that isn't applicable here.

Fred, first try to get you graphics driver right first.
So boot to prompt [1] and if it boots, do the graphics.
Then
Code: [Select]
sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300Check what is installed with
Code: [Select]
mhwd -lithen
Code: [Select]
sudo mhwd-gpu --setgl <what's installed>like say, 'sudo mhwd-gpu --setgl nvidia'
Reboot normally.

[1] at grub menu, press 'e'; arrow down to linux line.
arrow right past 'quiet' and 'splash'
backspace to remove  'quiet' and 'splash'
type in '3' (no appos)
F10 to boot
login with password.

Thanks! I did manage to get a new install booted once--I'm actually in it right now.
I had thought that I had the radeon (free) driver installed as per
Code: [Select]
[fred@platypus ~]$ inxi -Gx
Graphics:  Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] RS690M [Radeon Xpress 1200/1250/1270] bus-ID: 01:05.0
Display Server: X.Org 1.17.4 driver: radeon Resolution: 1280x800@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on ATI RS690 GLX Version: 2.1 Mesa 11.1.0 Direct Rendering: Yes

but now the commands you posted are indicating that ati (I'll have to google that) is installed/running.

The outputs you requested:
Code: [Select]
[fred@platypus ~]$ sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300
> Skipping already installed config 'video-ati' for device: 0000:01:05.0 (0300:1002:791f) Display controller ATI Technologies Inc RS690M [Radeon X1200 Series]
[/code]
Code: [Select]
[fred@platypus ~]$ mhwd -li
> Installed PCI configs:

                  NAME               VERSION          FREEDRIVER           TYPE

             video-ati            2015.11.08                true            PCI

Warning: No installed USB configs!
Code: [Select]
[fred@platypus ~]$ sudo mhwd-gpu --setgl ati

warning: could not find '/usr/lib/fglrx/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so'!

If you get a chance, could you see if any of this stands out to you? I'd really rather not reboot until I am more confident I've a chance at getting Manjaro back up! ;)
Thanks!

EDIT: It appears that "ati", or more properly, "video-ati" is the Arch package for the free AMD/ATI Radeon drivers. Maybe that's the same as Debian? I don't recall if they call it "ati" or not--maybe they use "mesa".  ??? Video drivers on Linux aren't my strong point; can't you tell?!  ;D

Just to be safe, can you also do
Code: [Select]
mhwd -l since it is ati

Just to be sure you do not require catalyst.

I did try to install catalyst (though my card is officially unsupported) in Debian once. Ugh--it was a disaster! Took me a few days to straighten everything out. :)

Well, one dragon slain, and one to go!
I can consistently boot now. :) However, some kernel modules apparently fail to load and I can only login in console (LightDM doesn't even come up).
My boot messages said to run the following and examine it:
Code: [Select]
fred@aussie! ~ $ cat /mnt/home/fred/systemd-modules-load.txt

Not too sure about this, but always lets keep system 'oiled' by
Code: [Select]
sudo pacman-mirrors -g
sudo pacman -Syy
sudo pacman -Suu

Now also let's check your grub linux line if there are some 'funny' things there which shouldn't be.
Like 'nomodeset' "radeon.modeset=0" etc..... (these shouldn't be there in an installed OS).
To be sure, remove 'quiet' and 'splash' first. No problem to do this any time and good to remove to check any other problem.
All this above can be done manually first - not need to do at /etc/default/grub until we are ready to fix anything.

You mentioned lightdm.
So lets check with
Code: [Select]
systemctl status display-manager
whatever it is, (I assume it's lightdm, change if not so)
Code: [Select]
sudo systemctl enable lightdm
ps: it could be 'lightdm-plymouth' but removing 'splash' (and 'quiet') can help.

good luck again.

Oops, forgot the most important thing (esp modules)
mkinitcpio.
Just do
Code: [Select]
sudo mkinitcpio -P
ps: It's late here, need to knock off soon.
There's a lot you need to do.
I know it's even later Aussie time, morning, shall I say?  ;)

Good night.

Goodnight, gohlip. :) Thanks for your help so far!
The day's just getting started in NSW--0600 at the moment. :) I'm sorta an early bird.

There are no weird boot args that I noticed. mkinitcpio similarly had no effect on the boot. I did get an interesting return for lightdm status, though:
Code: [Select]
