[KDE4] Archlinux dropped KDE4 support.
« on: 12. December 2015, 00:51:14 »
Hi all,

Archlinux will drop KDE4 support soon. We will too. All our install medias already ship Plasma 5 based so this is not a biggy at all. Followed (split-)packages will be removed soon:

Code: [Select]
kdebase-workspace
kdeartwork
kde-wallpapers
kdebase-plasma
kdeplasma4-addons
bluedevil4
kscreen4
kdeplasma-applets-plasma-nm
kcm-touchpad

All KDE4 lovers should adopt to Plasma 5. Sorry guys.

The more ppl who move to Plasma 5 the sooner it will get the bugs worked out. I love Plasma 5... a few things need improving, but it will come. Move forward, or fall behind.

Best regards.
Be kind to everyone, because everyone is fighting some sort of battle.

So for individuals that want to continue with KDE 4 next few years.
What is their options? Specific Distro's that cater to KDE 4?

Not an issue for me as fine with Plasma 5. But would imagine some other old farts like me.
That do not wish to move from their KDE 4 Porch!  :P

Yep knew 5.5 was going to bring back more goodies like that.
And simple handling of removable drives and devices was one of them  :P

Im not totally up to speed with Plasma 5 happenings ... but i understand its a different way of doing things, that shoehorning old libraries as opposed to rewriting would be a lesson in frustration.
I do remember the 'Chicken Licken nihilism' of the change from KDE3 to KDE4,so a few developers tried to cater for this, but i dont hear anyone extoling the virtues of the Trinity desktop these days.
If anything,im more concerned about Slackware and how they will navigate a way through Plasma5 - Arch seems to be a little more agnostic regarding libraries.

Well again its not like Plasma 5 and KDE5 are bad, far from it.
Both have stabilized much faster then KDE4 I just feel some rough patches need to be fixed.
Like constant theming between GTK and KDE apps, I wish brereze's GTK port was pushed a bit more or that oxygen-gtk didnt become deprecated.

@withjaro, I tried Trinity on Q4OS, but it is even more difficult to understand than Plasma 5, I gues 5 times more difficult.
MSI Wind Nettop, Intel Atom 230 1.6GHz (64bit), 2GB RAM
DEs: NET-minimal + (LXDE / Fluxbox / JWM); LXQt OpenRC
how to install on btrfs subvolumes

my first baptism of Linux was the wonderfully supportive Mepis KDE,though i came to interpret 'kio error' as equalling 'me doing something stupid' ;) ... ive always thought Konqi had some great (though somewhat overly decorative at times) applications and whilst im not aware of the technical changes, the vibe im getting from others excitement,is the KDE developers have sat down and interrogated their libraries and bashed out solutions to everything they could find ... so despite my ignorance im supportive of Plasma5 ... any KDE4 orphans that pull the heartstrings will be adopted and reimagined by concerned developers ;)

Dropping Plasma 4

2015-12-12

Since the KDE 4 desktop has been unmaintained for several months and it's becoming increasingly difficult to support two versions of Plasma, we are removing it from our repositories. Plasma 5.5 has just been released and should be stable enough to replace it.

KDE 4 installations will not be automatically upgraded to Plasma 5. However, we recommend all users to upgrade or switch to a maintained alternative as soon as possible, since any future update may break the KDE 4 desktop without prior notice. See the wiki for instructions on how to upgrade to Plasma 5.

See here https://forum.manjaro.org/index.php?topic=18225.0 for instructions to upgrade to Plasma 5

@MadmanRB: well, they updated breeze with Plasma 5.5. Check it out. It looks wonderful. Our theme Maia aswell.

Unfortunately Breeze is the only real theme for a unified setup and only its default color scheme.
Maia looks good but its GTK port still lags behind and looks hideous in GTK2 apps
