Thanks 1.14 is working for me, as well.

I do like MATE and will report if I find any problems with 1.14. I have it working with AWN and Compiz and it works great.

If it is decided that MATE is going to become dormant in Manjaro, I will switch to XFCE. I like Deepin as well but it is very slow on my PC.

MATE has been brilliant for me since the beginning of MATE.

is it ? I doubt it, mate is one of the "big" desktop environments. Lot of people depend on it.

If it is decided that MATE is going to become dormant in Manjaro

The MATE DE is not dependant on the MATE community edition. All the community edition essentially is, is an installer image that has the MATE desktop by default rather than (e.g.) Xfce. You can still install the MATE desktop from any of the Manjaro installer images.

The MATE community edition is dormant as it has no current maintainer, therefore it won't get any new iso images until either the maintainer picks it up again, or a new maintainer takes it over.

The MATE desktop is not dormant.

maybe I'm missing something, but Ubumtu Mate 16.04 (daily-build, like I tried it 10 minutes ago), does not even have Mate 1.14, it only has 1.12.2 , in the Main Mate Panel(s) -> "about"?, so Arch is probably going to have Mate 1.14.* officially in the repo's, for testing, long before Ubumtu, or LinuxMint, and even then, Mint would be the much better (debian/ubuntu) choice, instead of Ubumtu, if I had to pick between those two, but that's just imho.
Lol, they even copied Mint's "Welcome Screen" this time.

 talkin' 'bout  Ubumtu 16.04 mate,
mmm, all that hurt and pain, over the years because of Gnome3-shell/  Unity fiasco ,..., and the ffmpeg vs. libav crap, and a dozen other issues, (which was why I left them years ago), and here I am in Ubumtu 16.04 (Mate) looking at a somewhat "fake" Gnome2 interface exactly as it gloriously was in '06, in fact, the only thing missing is that brown-elephant's-ass wallpaper, that they had in the "real" Gnome 2, back then.

I guess that old saying is true, whatever goes around comes around.

Mate is not a "fake gnome2" interface. It's real gnome2 interface. And ubuntu-mate is the real ubuntu - the one that people started using for the first time after ditching windows :P . No wonder it's gaining more buzz than the unity version, mate is sensible and practical desktop UI not a tablet wannabe. Not to mention it's light and rock-solid.
I've tweaked and tinkered the hell out of mate and still have a stable system. But i haven;t given up .....  >:D

Ubuntu does a "freeze", if mate 1.14 did not get included it never will. Next Ubuntu LTS will be all mate 1.12 - not a bad choice because we need tried and tested packages for an LTS version. Not a bleeding edge one.

Ubuntu Mate's timing is really bad.  It comes out just the about the same time the new Mate does and so is always 1 version behind.  Ubuntu had that all timed right when it was their flagship DE.  And, I loved it.

If you really miss that 'brown-elephant's-ass wallpaper', it still available in one of those old wallpaper packages.  :) >:D

Ubuntu/Debian had played the "Shell" game with Gnome 3 and Unity, and forfeited Gnome 2, back then, but lost.
So, wait for LinuxMint 18 Mate, later in the spring/summer, it'll have Mate 1.14 "Stable", if all goes well, and then you'll have the "real" new and improved Gnome 2 once again, as LinuxMint Mate had envisioned, and succeeded, in implementing.
Mint is simply Ubuntu, but done better, (especially for the Linux beginners).

Thanks for the updates.  Is there a new ISO in the very near future?
